misc_thread 6:30 PM Downton Abbey: Fashion & Social Change Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Downton Abbey is a television phenomenon, watched by fans throughout the UK and the USA. Like other British costume dramas, the costumes are presented with attention given to meticulous detail.  This program explores the many changes that occurred throughout the time period depicted in Downton Abbey and how these changes influenced fashion. The social, technological, and political changes of the early twentieth century were reflected in the notable evolution of women’s and men’s clothing. This presentation will look back at what was fashionable - real or otherwise and will look at some of the influential designers and other persons involved in the years of the first five seasons. Presenter Susan J. Jerome is the Collections Manager at the University of Rhode Island Historic Textile and Costume Collection. Ms. Jerome also works as a textile and quilt conservator, and a consultant to museums and historical societies.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  Please contact the library to register.

Wear your favorite "Downton Abbey" fashionable hat to the program and be entered into a drawing for a copy of the dvd "Manners of Downton Abbey".

The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library is asking local residents to help save a life. On May 16th they will be hosting a marrow donor registry drive to raise awareness about the need for marrow donors. Potential donors can take the first step to save a life between 10:00am and 3:00pm in the library meeting room.  Registration requires paperwork & a cheek swab sample taken from the inside of the mouth.  Most donations, if you later match a patient, are done through an automated blood donation.  To register you must be between the ages of 18-44, in generally good health and willing to donate to any patient in need.  Donors are most likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity and doctors request donors in the 18-44 age group more than 90 percent of the time. There is no registration- just stop by between 10 and 3!

misc_none 6:30 PM The Mattabesecs & the Indigenous Communities of Connecticut Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Sponsored by the Berlin Historical Society.

CT’s indigenous communities have long, rich histories.  Ignored or themselves falsely labeled extinct by local 19th century town histories, the story of their evolution into complex tribal societies with sophisticated social and political traditions had remained largely untold. This presentation shows that although ravaged by European diseases, war, land losses, poverty, and discrimination, Native American peoples adapted to their constantly changing social landscapes through a series of survival strategies.  Many continue to be a vibrant part of Connecticut life today.  No registration required.

Presented by Lucianne Lavin, author of  Connecticut's Indigenous Peoples: What Archaeology, History, and Oral Traditions Teach Us About Their Communities and Cultures.  Books will be for sale at event.
