Description of The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman:

A forbidden love story set on the tropical island of St.Thomas about the extraordinary woman who gave birth to painter Camille Pissarro- the Father of Impressionism. Growing up on idyllic St.Thomas in the early 1800s, Rachel dreams of life in faraway Paris. Rachel's mother, a pillar of their small refugee community of Jews who escaped the Inquisition, has never forgiven her daughter for being a difficult girl who refuses to live by the rules. Growing up, Rachel's salvation is their maid Adelle's belief in her strengths, and her deep, life-long friendship with Jestine, Adelle's daughter. But Rachel's life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father's business. When her husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frâedâerick arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a defiant, passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of their family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists of France. Building on the triumphs of The Dovekeepers and The Museum of Extraordinary Things, set in a world of almost unimaginable beauty, The Marriage of Opposites showcases the beloved, bestselling Alice Hoffman at the height of her considerable powers. Once forgotten to history, the marriage of Rachel and  Frâedâerick is a story that is as unforgettable as it is remarkable.

Contact: Brookhaven Free Library   631-286-1923   bfl@brookhavenfreelibrary.org

We are proud to announce a partnership with Lincon Center to offer screenings of their exceptional performances in our very own community room.

  • Show Boat, Monday, March 20, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Based on a bestselling novel by Edna Ferber, Show Boat tells the 40-year story of the lives of performers, stagehands and dock workers who are the denizens of the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat. The New Yorker noted that the show “was a radical departure in musical storytelling, marrying spectacle with seriousness”, moving beyond the light and airy plots of previous operettas and musical comedies with its serious subjects of racial prejudice and tragic love. Highlights include “Ol’ Man River”, “Make Believe” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man”. Broadway’s most revived and revised work, Show Boat was the first musical ever performed by an opera company — by New York City Opera in 1954.

  • Curtain Up: The School of American Ballet Workshop Performances, Monday, April 17, 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Go behind the scenes for the first time ever to experience the intensive training of ballet’s brightest future stars as they prepare for their vital end-of-year performances. An all-Balanchine program features Serenade, and excerpts from Swan Lake and Western Symphony.

  • Voices of a People's History of the United States, Monday, May 15, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

This Lincoln Center commission commemorates the 35th anniversary of Howard Zinn’s seminal book, A People’s History of the United States, with music and spoken-word performances that will bring to life the extraordinary history of ordinary people in the book: those who built the movements that made the United States what it is today, ending slavery and Jim Crow, protesting war and the genocide of Native Americans, creating unions and the eight-hour work day, advancing women's rights and gay liberation and struggling to right the wrongs of the day.

At the heart of it is their eldest son, Michael, a brilliant, anxious music fanatic, and the story of how, over the span of decades, his younger siblings- the responsbile Celia and the tightly controlled Alec- struggle along with their mother to care for Michael's increasingly troubled existence.

Second Tuesday of the month. Copies of titles are available for check out at the Circulation Desk. New members are welcomed! Please register.

Description of A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles:

When in 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the Count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

Description of A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman:

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon- the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a criminal and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundation.
