Summer Reading Wrap-Up Discussion

presented by the Blackstone Public Library

Tuesday, September 15

10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Summer went by in a flash, thanks to the countless programs and events hosted by children’s and young adult librarians across the state and beyond. The purpose of this discussion is to chat about what worked, what didn’t and everything in between, from great (and not so great) performers, required summer reading books, no-shows for programs, volunteer issues and more.

Black Holes

September 17 at 6:30 P.M.
When exploring black holes we encounter warped space, quantum particles, and other topics once found only in science fiction. Black holes were predicted to exist as early as 1783, but their existence was not confirmed until late in the 20th century. We will start with a review of the nature and properties of light, and then go on to gain a better understanding of these once theoretical objects while preserving the wonder around them. We discuss common misconceptions and present some visualizations of spaceflight near a black hole. This includes an introduction to gravity and how Einstein changed our understanding of gravity. The program is intended for people who are interested in, but do not have a background in astronomy. Program length is 70 to 90 minutes including audience questions.  This program is presented by Kevin Kopchynski, an accomplished public speaker, interpreting science for non-scientific audiences in classroom and seminar/workshop settings, elementary through college levels.  Registration is required.  This program is funded by a grant from UniBank as part of the library’s Arts and Sciences Series.

        There are 40 spaces available.
