Playwright and composer Ricardo Pitts-Wiley describes A KWANZAA SONG as a Middle Passage play. He uses elements of music, dance, poetry and storytelling to connect the African and African-American experience in a celebration of the greatness of the human spirit. The play also demonstrates the resilience of core principles that have helped people from all cultures and walks of life to survive even the most difficult times in their history. What emerges is an uplifting story of faith and courage that people of all ages can enjoy.

This year’s production is directed by Mississippi State alum Victor Terry. The story begins with a village celebrating the first day of Kwanzaa. For the next seven days the people are reminded of the principals that guide their lives and allow them to build strong families and communities.

But not all is well. The Ndaalava, the people’s Spirit Helpers, have looked into the fire where they can see the future. There they see the coming of slave ships and years of bondage for the children of Africa.

They also see hope. To keep that hope safe and alive, they send a young Spirit named Azu to the New World with the stolen children to return their essence and proud history. On his journey Azu is tested many times and ultimately must make a difficult choice.

A KWANZAA SONG features a cast of 10 with two musicians .The Company will perform Pitts-Wiley’s original score that ranges from Afro-Centric to gospel.

A KWANZAA SONG is a holiday treat that you don’t want to miss.

Megerdichian Metal Miniatures Exhibit

From now until January 5, 2015, visitors to the Museum of Work & Culture will be treated to a special sneak preview of a collection of metal miniatures by Abraham Megerdichian of Cambridge, MA.  A full exhibit will take place in the spring of 2015 in the Museum’s changing gallery.

Megerdichian was a lifelong machinist who began to make utility items for his home, such as knives, vases, pans, during his lunch breaks working in the factory. As his skills improved so did the complexity of his miniatures. He began to make increasingly intricate objects from brass, aluminum, copper, and stainless steel as gifts for his family and friends.

The Museum showcases a collection of delightful animals and toys crafted by Megerdichian during this holiday season. The Museum will be hosting a larger exhibit of the miniatures, showcasing the great range of Megerdichian’s imagination and skill, beginning in May 2015.

For more information on the exhibit or the Museum, please contact director Anne Conway at aconway@rihs.org or (401) 769-9675.

MORALITY PLAY adapted for the stage by Tony Estrella

based on the book by Barry Unsworth

directed by Tyler Dobrowsky

JAN 1 - FEB 1, 2015

SYNOPSIS:

1361: A bone-chilling winter in England. The Black Death, dormant for more than a decade, has returned with a vengeance. The Church rules the land, and a ragged troupe of actors accompanied by a renegade priest roams the countryside performing religious stories for the masses. But everything changes when a young boy is found dead and a mute girl stands to be hanged for the murder. Sensing a miscarriage of justice (and potential earnings!), the itinerant actors try to unravel the mystery by weaving the murder into their morality play. The result is a political morass fraught with danger for everyone involved. Adapted from the best-selling novel by Booker Prize Winner Barry Unsworth, Morality Play is a medieval murder mystery at the crossroads of sacred and secular — full of intrigue, suspense and lessons for our time.

“Witty madness…dazzling and delightful!”

—The New York Times

The beloved Mummenschanz have brought myth, mystery and plenty of laughter to generations of audiences across four continents for over four decades. Since its three-year run on Broadway, this Swiss mask theatre troupe has pioneered a new form of visual performance and created a legacy. Hailed for their ability to fold, twist, arc and teeter the human body into amorphous, immensely adorable creatures, Mummenschanz promises to delight anyone from 2 to 92. Within their comic and wordless universe, everyday objects such as toilet paper, wires, tubes, and boxes spring to life to become fantastical characters. Using silence, illusion, light and shadow, these invisible masters of movement have revolutionized theatre, morphing ordinary materials into magically expressive masks and props. Their universe is filled with incredible stories that transcend the need for words, spark the imagination, and reveal timeless insight on human connections.

“To hear Philip Glass play the piano live was… like receiving a manuscript directly from the hands of Shakespeare.”

—Politikken (Denmark)

Experience an intimate evening with one of the world’s most important living composers, Philip Glass. This chamber music concert is a rare opportunity to hear Glass perform both on solo piano and alongside the exceptional violinist, Tim Fain, acclaimed for his performance in the film "Black Swan". Fain is one of the few soloists for whom Glass has composed solo material; when asked why Glass answered: "because he’s that good". Pairing two incredible artists at two very different points in their careers, this unique presentation highlights their enormous generosity of spirit and features compositions spanning Glass' career, including works created specifically for Fain. The hauntingly beautiful music of Philip Glass always transports listeners to a state of musical bliss.

"There has been no company I have been so glad to discover as Noche Flamenca and, above all, its lead dancer, Soledad Barrio. I can think of no current ballet star in the world as marvelous as she." —Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

Sizzling flamenco electrifies the stage as this Madrid-based company of dancers, singers and musicians provides an authentic look at a fiery and expressive art form. Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca promise a passionate journey through the very heart and soul of flamenco. All aspects of flamenco – song, dance, and music – are interrelated, creating a true communal spirit among the group’s ten performers. But Barrio is the indisputable star, a great artist without pretense, who makes you aware that, above its virtuosic feet, flamenco is an art of curves, arcs and circles. Her body is her soul’s instrument, ensnared by the music, and you feel yourself fortunate to be in the same space with her.

HEAVENLY GINGERS 5 – a celebration of the lives and passions of Jessica Morris and Keri Anne O’Donnell, in the Twin River Event Center. Both young performers were taken from us far too early – Jessica, at the age of 20, lost her battle with ovarian cancer and Keri, at the age of 15, was killed in a tragic car accident. Memorial funds have been established in both their honors and are being used to help fuel the passion for performance in our youth within the local area.

2015 Date of Event to be announced!

The Cherry Trees of the Blackstone is a joint initiative of The Pawtucket Foundation and Blackstone Valley Tourism Council to work with the Cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls to plant cherry trees along Roosevelt Avenue in the two communities and raise money for a dedicated Landscape Improvement Fund. In the spring of 2009, 65 rancho cherry trees were purchased and planted in the project area.  The plantings have also inspired the hosting of the Annual Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival and an annual Earth Day clean up. In its first year the Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival built a strong foundation for future celebrations of the Cherry Trees planted along Roosevelt Avenue in Central Falls and Pawtucket.  More than 400 people came out to run, walk, eat and celebrate during the inaugural 2010 event and an additional 20 trees were planted on the west side of Roosevelt Avenue.  In 2011, more than 1800 runners participated in the various races held during the event.

Louis Yip and Sunny Ng, business partners and the developer of M-Residential, were prime movers behind the project offering a $30,000 investment.  Collette Vacations as well as Storage America, Anthony Gudas, and the Chinese American Church also contributed to the project.

The Cherry Trees have helped to transform this once industrial corridor into a vibrant walkable streetscape.  Organizers hope that the Annual Festival will continue to draw attention and dollars to help pay for continued maintenance and planting of future trees as the neighborhood continues to revitalize.

Join us as we celebrate these beautifully blossoming trees! Please direct questions about the event to the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council 401-724-2200 or info@richerryblossomfestival.com.

Avenue Q: The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marks
Book by Jeff Whitty
Based on an Original Concept by Robert Lopez & Jess Marx

Directed by Paul Adam

Humans and puppets interact in this tale of twenty-somethings learning how to live and love in New York City. Think “Sesame Street” with adult themes, humor, and song.

Avenue Q is about real life. It’s about finding a job, losing a job, learning about racism, getting an apartment, getting kicked out of your apartment, being different, falling in love, promiscuity, avoiding commitment, hang-overs, Internet porn and discovering the world.

The tour guide explains the ecology of the river and surrounding wetlands interspersed with stories about the people and history of the region. If you have never cruised on the Riverboat “Explorer” it is something you must do; and if you have, you can join with us again and again because every time you go on the river, you see something new!
