Desk Set – 1957 - 103 minutes

Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn) heads up the research department at the Federal Broadcasting Company, a major TV network. Assigned by the network president to introduce computers into some of the department’s functions, Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) arrives at Bunny’s well-run division to observe daily activities. Unfortunately, however, Sumner is ordered to keep his mission secret. As a result, the whole staff believes they are being replaced. To make matters worse, there appears to be more than a little electricity between Bunny and Sumner, which upsets Bunny’s boyfriend Mike (Gig Young). As the tension mounts in the office, so do the laughs in this classic romantic comedy. No registration required.

State of the Union – 1948 – 124 minutes

Academy Award-winning screen icons Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn shine in a classic film about marriage, politics and the pursuit of the American dream. When idealistic businessman Grant Matthews (Tracy) is chosen to run for the Presidency, he is caught between the ruthless ambition of a string-pulling newspaper owner and the integrity of his devoted wife (Hepburn). But just as Matthews embraces his ultimate goal, he realizes that he may have lost touch with the American people. Masterfully directed by three-time Academy Award winner Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life, It Happened One Night), State of the Union is a timeless crowd pleaser with a stellar supporting cast including Angela Lansbury, Van Johnson and Adolphe Menjou. Cheshire Public Library, 104 Main Street, presents Nutritionist Maribeth Abrams, Monday, September 28, 6:30 p.m.

Are afternoon and evening munchies getting the better of you? Do chips, cookies and breads call your name - even though your good intentions and knowledge try to push them away? Getting over these uncontrollable eating urges can be a lot easier than you think, and it doesn't even have much to do with willpower at all. This is a highly motivational presentation showing exactly why this “vicious cookie cycle” occurs - and most importantly, what to do about it.

Abrams is the author of two internationally distributed natural foods cookbooks, Associate Editor of Vegetarian Voice Magazine, and on the Board of Trustees for the North American Vegetarian Society.

Seating for this event is limited.  Please register online or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.  This program is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

Have you ever rushed through the day going from activity to activity on auto-pilot?  Eating without tasting and looking without seeing?  Children are leading an increasingly busy life with school, sports events, music lessons and more. So they also experience that rushed pace.  Mindfulness techniques train you to pay attention to those things in the present moment in a nonjudgmental and accepting manner. This gives children the opportunity to stop and choose a response thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively.

Parents/caregivers will be participating in this program as well through mindfulness exercises with your child and through a book discussion.  The book Mindful Parenting: Simple and Powerful Solutions for Raising Creative, Engaged, Happy Kids in Today's Hectic World by Dr. Kristen Race will be used to discuss techniques for mindful parenting.

This program will meet on the third floor of the library.  This program will meet 8 times, September 3, 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 4:00 pm.

Registration required starting August 15.

Who are our Muslim neighbors? What do they believe? What has been their experience as a result of extremist actions in various parts of the world?

CCIU - CT Council for Interreligous Understanding, the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, and Hartford Seminary are co-sponsoring a series of conversations throughout Connecticut to inform the public about the American-Muslim experience and to discuss some of the concerns about that community raised by the broader American public since 9/11. Four Muslim neighbors will informally share some of their experiences and respond to questions such as:

  • Why don’t we hear moderate Muslims speaking out against extremism
  • Why do some girls and women wear Muslim dress and others do not
  • What does the Qur’an really say about Christians, Jews and members of other faiths?

American Muslims do not have all the answers, but guests will respond out of their own experiences, raising issues that concern all Americans.
