misc_none Art Exhibit: Chinese Folk Art by Xiang Jin Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Xiang Jin, originally an established artist in China and now a Cheshire resident will have her work featured in an art exhibit in the Mary Baldwin room of the Cheshire Public Library during the month of September.  Xiang, an expert in painting, paper-cut and embroidery, has eleven pieces of art published in the Encyclopedia Collection of China Contemporary Art.  She is the author of  Chinese Meticulous Figure (Portrait) Painting Techniques and has contributed significantly to Chinese Folk Art with her artistic folk art embroidery and paper-cut. Xiang’s use of color and composition across all media is exquisite.   The exhibit at the library will feature many of her embroideries, which appear three-dimensional in their detail.

Environmentally conscious, Xiang Jin has also made original contributions to “Traditional Chinese Meticulous Painting with Heavy Colors” by inventing an incredible and ingenious process to use metal oxides for pigments, thereby helping to preserve mineral ores.

Because of these contributions, Xiang has been asked to hold a critical role in the mission of safeguarding and promoting Chinese folk art.  Xiang Jin says her mission is to introduce traditional Chinese arts to the world.

Xiang and her family hope that you will have a chance to visit the exhibit from September 3- 30 .  The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, September 13 from 1-3pm.

lib_bookpurple 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Reckless: True Story of the Legendary Korean War Pony Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:      ev@cheshirelibrary.org

Janet Barrett, author of They Called Her Reckless -- A True Story of War, Love And One Extraordinary Horse, will appear to discuss the story of Reckless, a small Korean pony who became a real-life hero during the Korean War.  She saved many lives, raised spirits and won the love and respect of all who knew her.  Reckless hauled ammo, brought back dead and wounded Marines, boosted the troops’ morale, was awarded two Purple Hearts and finally brought back to the U.S., where she lived out her years at Camp Pendleton, California.

From the moment she heard about Reckless, Janet Barrett knew she would write this book. Her experiences as a horsewoman gave her a particular appreciation of the tight bond that developed between Reckless and her fellow Marines, from which the story springs.  Enhancing Reckless' story is an extensive selection of photographs of her time in Korea and later in California. Many of them come from the private collections of the Marines who knew her, and have never before been published. The generosity of so many -- some 60 Marines in all -- who shared their memories of Reckless, made it possible to tell her story.

There is limited seating for this event.  Please register online or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.

Ultimate Gift – 2006 - 114 minutes

After the death of the oil tycoon Howard 'Red' Stevens (James Garner), his greedy family is gathered in the office of his lawyer, partner and friend Mr. Theophillis 'Ted' Hamilton and his associated Miss Hastings for the reading of the will. For his reckless and selfish grandson Jason Stevens, who hated him, Red assigns twelve apparently simple tasks called "gifts" - of work, money, friends, learning, problems, family, laughter, dreams, giving, gratitude, a day and love - challenging the playboy Jason to a journey of discoveries. When he meets the leukemic girl Emily and her mother Alexia, Jason changes his perspective of life and money, superseding the expectations of Red, improving and becoming a better man and receiving the ultimate gift from his wise grandfather. On his way to Australia, frontier opportunist Jason McCullough (Garner) stumbles into a small gold-rush town and decides to earn a little extra pocket money by accepting a temporary assignment as its sheriff. Happily applying himself to his new position, McCullough manages to turn the town derelict (Elam) into his deputy, outsmart the dreaded Danby clan (led by Brennan in a hilarious comic performance), and fend off the lusty advances of the mayor's daughter (Hackett) all without breaking a sweat or dirtying his shiny black boots! After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life -- with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor's fellow students, teachers and the entire town learn that getting a new "leash on life" can be monstrous.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014).
There's plenty of fun for the whole family as Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Animal and the entire Muppets gang head out on a world tour. But mayhem follows the Muppets, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper. Now Kermit is behind bars at the mercy of prison warden Nadya (Tina Fey), and the World's Number One Criminal, Constantine -- a dead ringer for Kermit -- has taken his place. As Constantine and his dastardly sidekick Dominic (Ricky Gervais) plot the robbery of the century, they are pursued by Sam Eagle and Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon (Ty Burrell). Will Constantine get away with his nefarious scheme? Will Kermit escape in time to save the day? Packed with dozens of guest cameos and some great new songs, Disney's MUPPETS MOST WANTED is the most hilarious, most wanted Muppet movie ever!
