June 23 – Imitation Game – 2014 – 114 minutes

In 1939, newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma -- which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyze Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. No registation required.

Night Skies is a program featuring Mike Francis using Starlab, the inflatable planetarium dome and projector system.  A remarkably realistic night sky awaits groups of up to 30.  There is no need to worry about the weather, time of day or travel.

The experience of entering the giant bubble fascinates.  The excitement of being able to identify that bright red star from last night's sky or locating an elusive constellation sparks the imagination.

Have you ever rushed through the day going from activity to activity on auto-pilot?  Eating without tasting and looking without seeing?  Children are leading an increasingly busy life with school, sports events, music lessons and more. So they also experience that rushed pace.  Mindfulness techniques train you to pay attention to those things in the present moment in a nonjudgmental and accepting manner. This gives children the opportunity to stop and choose a response thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively.

Registration required starting June 22.

Buzz Gordo (aka Gary Mezzi) & Tom Smith play music for kids and their folks in the style of artists like Dan Zanes. Buzz strums guitar and ukulele, while Tom keeps a beat that makes it easy for kids to dance around.

They incorporate elements of folk, rockabilly, calypso and other diverse styles, with songs about everything from annoying monkeys, to the pleasures of chewing gum, to an epic rap about Dr. Seuss! Throw in some storytelling (Buzz has been a children’s librarian for years) and lots of movement and participation, and kids from 3-10, and maybe even their older siblings, will have a rockin’ time.

Ages 3+

Who are our Muslim neighbors? What do they believe? What has been their experience as a result of extremist actions in various parts of the world?

CCIU - CT Council for Interreligous Understanding, the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, and Hartford Seminary are co-sponsoring a series of conversations throughout Connecticut to inform the public about the American-Muslim experience and to discuss some of the concerns about that community raised by the broader American public since 9/11. Four Muslim neighbors will informally share some of their experiences and respond to questions such as:

  • Why don’t we hear moderate Muslims speaking out against extremism
  • Why do some girls and women wear Muslim dress and others do not
  • What does the Qur’an really say about Christians, Jews and members of other faiths?

American Muslims do not have all the answers, but guests will respond out of their own experiences, raising issues that concern all Americans.
