Children are natural yogis! Yoga can help children to develop body and breath awareness, build concentration and focus, and increase their confidence and self-expression. Mindfulness techniques train you to pay attention to those things in the present moment in a nonjudgmental and accepting manner. This gives children the opportunity to stop and choose a response thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively.

Registration required starting December 21 for Cheshire residents and December 28 for all others.

misc_none 2:00 PM Making Healthy Chocolate Treats! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:      drutter@cheshirelibrary.org

With the holidays over, we naturally begin to focus on healthy eating and exercise but we still want our chocolate!   Can chocolate really be part of a healthy diet?  Long time chef and chocolate expert Maria Brandriff will demonstrate that it can. The program will feature information about the health benefits of chocolate as well demonstrations of some healthy and easy-to-make recipes.  Ample samples and recipes will be available.

In addition to being known as the “chocolate lady”, Maria Poirier Brandriff was the Assistant Director at the Cheshire Public Library for over 30 years.  Her interest in fine cooking and baking came from growing up in a Ukrainian household where Viennese-inspired tortes and confections dominated every holiday.  Since then, Ms. Brandriff has experimented with the traditional recipes and has come up with her own variations and has become more and more involved with the intricacies of working with chocolate. At holiday time she produces hundreds of chocolate truffle candies, which she shares with family and friends.  Ms. Brandriff received the Certificate of Gastronomy program from the  University of New Haven,  studied in France with a noted Provencal chocolatier and was the featured chef at the Chef’s Table series at Zinc Restaurant in New Haven last year.

Educational program presented by the Cheshire Art League.

Printmaking Demo by New Haven Artist Michael Angelis.  Monoprinting is a direct printmaking process where the artist applies and/or subtracts pigment from a plexiglass plate and prints the results on paper.  It's called monoprinting because each print is unique, as there is no "master" plate to work from - each impression varies with the artist's impression of ink. Michael Angelis maintains a studio in the Mill River District in New Haven, Connecticut.  He is represented by Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven.

A born sounder and mover, your baby is already equipped with the means and potential to make music. You've probably noticed how they respond when you play a song in the car or sing them a song to soothe them. Developing your baby's natural musicality will open the door to a world of possibility, not only for music learning but for all learning. We invite you to try out this demonstration of a Music Together Babies Class for families with infants from birth through eight months of age. In this class, the activities are specifically designed to teach you how to support music development in infancy and how to connect with your baby through music using methods such as "purposeful touch", "sound-layering",  and "dancing for baby".

Music Together an internationally recognized early childhood music program. This research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum strongly encourages adult involvement and emphasizes actual music experiences rather than concepts about music.

This class is presented by Michele Urban from Musical Folk.

    Contact:      drutter@cheshirelibrary.org

Talented folk duo Andy & Judy Daigle blend popular folk covers with their growing list of original songs. Their close harmonies blend Judy’s evocative alto and Andy’s deep baritone. The New England natives have been singing together since 2009, first performing at open mic nights where they featured cover versions of songs written by favorites John Prine, Bob Dylan, Ian and Sylvia, and Peter, Paul & Mary.
Beginning instrumentally with a classic folk guitar base, Andy & Judy have deepened their sound through the addition of mandolin, banjo, piano, harmonica, and with support musicians, bass and percussion.

Irish Music and Dance in America

Award-winning, internationally acclaimed performers, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly present captivating programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance.  Elwood and Aubrey blend gorgeous harmonies and play an astonishing array of instruments including guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, limberjacks, and other surprises including a thrilling interpretation of freestyle Appalachian clog dancing.  Married since 1989, Aubrey and Elwood have performed widely in the United States and abroad and their thirteen recordings receive international airplay.  Joining Aubrey and Elwood is Kevin Doyle, a delightful, compelling performer of old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance as well as percussion and vocals. A lifelong dancer, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of "close to the ground" rhythms and intricate foot work.  In the fall of 2014, Kevin received the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowship, the highest award given in the United States for traditional art forms.

Noah Baerman is an acclaimed jazz pianist/composer, educator, author, and Artistic Director of the non-profit Resonant Motion, through which he curates the popular “Jazz Up Close” series in Middletown. For this program, Noah and his trio will demonstrate some of the nuts and bolts of instrumental jazz in lay terms, but without watering down the music itself. Part concert and part interactive workshop and discussion, the afternoon will illuminate ways in which musicians use the language of jazz to spontaneously interpret material and communicate with one another, demonstrated through both original material and classic jazz standards.
