    Contact: Anna    203-272-2245 x 33039

You’ve heard all this talk about the gluten-free diet. But what is it? And how do you know if you are one of the 30% of the population who should be on it? Heather Jacobsen, author of GOING GLUTEN-FREE: 7 Surprising Facts You Should Know if You Want to Achieve Dietary Success, will discuss just what the gluten-free diet is all about, and whether or not you might benefit from it. If you suffer from chronic symptoms of one kind or another, you might find some answers in her discussion.

Heather Jacobsen is an author, researcher and founder of the online magazine, Stuffed Pepper. In dealing with health issues that no conventional doctor seemed to be able to solve, she has unraveled the true science behind gluten, grains and chronic disease. She has an MSc in Ethnobotany, and worked at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the National Academy of Sciences.

The book “Going Gluten-Free:  7 Surprising Facts You Should Know if You Want to Achieve Dietary Success” will be available for purchase after the lecture.

U.S. Federal Census: More Than Paint by Number

October is Family History Month!

The U.S. Federal Census is one of the most important tools we use in tracing our families through time. Unfortunately many do not fully mine the information recorded there.  We will look beyond the names, dates and places and examine the wealth of data that has been included as the populations schedules evolved over time.  Illustrated with examples tracing one family from 1790 through the 1940 population schedules, you will learn what clues to further research are provided.

Edwin W. Strickland, the program presenter, is past-president of Connecticut Society of Genealogists, and has been a Genealogist for over 35 years.  He is a charter member of the Connecticut Professional Genealogical Council.

Seating for this event is limited.  Please register online or call 203-272-2245, ext. 4.  This program is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

"The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook brings home cooks a stellar collection of 150 delicious recipes from the Nutmeg State’s celebrated chefs and the dedicated farmers, fishers, ranchers, foragers, and cheese makers they partner with to create dynamic New American and New England fare. This is the best of regional and farm-to-table cuisine from food producers and purveyors whose commitment to sustainability and quality is evident in everything they do.

As consumers have demanded more locally grown foods, more organics, and foods with fewer additives, the locavore movement has taken hold across the U.S. Every state and region has their own unique products and their own version of healthful, wholesome, innovative cuisine. The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook showcases delectable specialties that the state’s growers and chefs are creating using local microgreens, heirloom lettuces, sunchokes, ramps, quail eggs, Burrata, bison, chevre, heritage-breed pork, oysters, and more. Recipes are presented clearly and are easy to follow; they utilize ingredients that are readily available no matter where you shop.

Along with mouthwatering recipes and beautiful photography you’ll be treated to fascinating profiles of food producers, chefs, and restaurants. This celebration of Connecticut’s healthy, sustainable food scene is a collection to savor and return to again and again." (Amazon.com)

In 1977 Master Gary Baylor began his life in the martial arts by studying the art of Tae Kwon-Do under Grand Master Tae Hee Yi (Lee) from Korea. In 1987 Gary developed and taught martial arts programs for the Cheshire Acrobatics Training School, the Y.M.C.A., and Albertus Magnus College. It was in 1990 that he began teaching for the Cheshire Park & Recreation Department until 2007. He is actively affiliated with the Canadian-based organization Unified Tae Kwon-Do International. Documentary Screening of Dark Side of the Full Moon (75 min), followed by Q&A Panel.  This film about postpartum mood disorders is both informative and a call to action.  If you are someone interested or concerned about the well-being of mothers, babies and families, please come.

"Dark Side of the Full Moon delves into the unseen world of maternal mental health in the U.S. It will uncover the disconnect within the medical community to effectively screen, refer, and treat the 1.3 million mothers affected each year, giving a face and voice to the countless women who have suffered in silence. ...Two women begin a life changing journey, documenting their common story with women from around the country, Maureen looking to the past, asking why this happened, and Jennifer looking to the future, wanting to find a system that protects mothers from this happening again. The film highlights inconsistencies of care, questioning the system and doctors as well as ourselves, asking who should be held accountable for the staggering number of women still suffering in silence, facing barriers to treatment, where professionals and the general public's lack of knowledge when mixed with fear can create fatal consequences. Maureen and Jennifer uncover the history, the origins, and mythology surrounding the dark side of motherhood, and will attempt to reconstruct the idea of “motherhood”, while forging a way to find the best system of care for women to find the help they need with ease, without shame, and a quick recovery." (excerpt about the film taken from PPD Documentary DARK SIDE OF THE FULL MOON)

The Panel will include Teresa Twomey, JD, author of Understanding Postpartum Psychosis: A Temporary Madness, and a founder and former President of the Postpartum Support International (PSI) Connecticut Chapter (PSI CT Chapter); and Amanda Salvo, volunteer Facilitator for the Adjustment to Baby Challenges Support Circle of West Hartford, Membership Committee Chair Member Elect for PSI CT Chapter; additional panelists TBD.
