holiday_centennial2 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Connecticut in the Great War Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Bill Basel     bbasel@cheshirelibrary.org

This year marks the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, also known as the Great War.

Connecticut, known as “the Arsenal of the Nation” during World War One, was said to have produced more than half of all small arms munitions used by the Allied Forces. Yet Connecticut played other roles as well, ones that are just now being revealed. Join Christine Pittsley from the Connecticut State Library's “Remembering World War One” project to explore what was happening here on the home front as our soldiers fought in the trenches. Learn about how our war governor, Marcus Holcomb, prepared the state for war and how Connecticut’s Council of Defense became one of the largest and most effective in the nation. From Liberty Loan campaigns and victory gardens to local soldiers and nurses on the front lines learn about the ways Cheshire contributed to winning the war.

Christine Pittsley is the Project Director for the Remembering World War One community archiving project and several other WWI initiatives at the Connecticut State Library. She is also the Chair for the Connecticut World War One Centennial Committee as well as being Connecticut’s liaison to the United States World War One Centennial Commission. For the past nine years, Christine has led the State Library’s archival and museum digitization and metadata programs. She has been involved in a number of statewide digital initiatives, and has served on the boards of the Association for the Study of Connecticut History, Cheshire Historical Society, and Cheshire Historic District Commission.

rec_painters_palette.GIF 6:00 PM  -  8:15 PM Cheshire Art League: Artist Jay Babina Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    203-281-0228   cheshireartleague@gmail.com

Educational program presented by the Cheshire Art League.

In 1966, Jay Babina graduated from the Silvermine College of Art and continued his art education at the University of Bridgeport; where he graduated from the school of Graphic Design. Although fine art painting always remained a dominate force, he worked in Advertising Agencies and Graphic Design  studios where he did a substantial amount of illustration from simple hands holding tools to the  more complex full color renderings of situations and events. This was the pre-computer era where Graphic Design relied heavily on the ability to render and conceptualize on paper and work with inks and markers.

From the early seventies on, he was still involved with fine art paintings - working in oil as well as water based mediums both opaque and transparent. He used to sell his paintings at the outdoor shows which are still common venues for artists today. For over 25 years, Jay have visited Rockport and Gloucester, MA to indulge in Art and it still remains one of his favorite places for that type of rocky seacoast beauty and fishing heritage. Jay is a member of many Art Associations and has had many one-person shows over the years. Being active in art is a way to grow and learn from others. Jay’s personal heart felt goals about art is not making paintings to sell but to quench and fulfill his desire to paint, improve techniques and create personal images that he finds beautiful.

As artists, we are simply gifted with the prime distinction as viewers of detail. The rotten tree stump that everyone walks by, stops us in our tracks and is fuel for our relationship and appreciation of nature and it's beauty. However as artists, it somehow makes us want to hold on to it or at least try to capture its details for a fleeting moment. Absorbing these details does not mean you have to paint that way, but without them, we can only smell the roses.

Jay will be speaking on the
perceptive within landscapes & his passion for plein air painting.

Free and open to the public.

misc_none 2:00 PM All Things Bakelite Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Please join us for the screening of a new documentary "All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic" by John Maher. This film is a provocative story about the "father of modern plastics", Leo Hendrik Baekeland. In 1907, the Belgian-born American chemist made one of the most transformative discoveries of the 20th century - the first wholly synthetic plastic, which he called Bakelite. Baerkeland's invention ushered in an explosion of new man-made materials that marked the beginnings of our modern industrial age, and changed our way of life. The primary source and inspiration for this illuminating film is one of the great grandsons of Baekeland himself, executive producer Hugh Karraker. The film is for all audiences interested in the human drama that underlies history, science, business, and art - and the surprising insight that the nature of plastic reveals about the nature of people. An open forum discussion with the panel, including the director Mr. Maher and Mr. Karraker, follows the screening. More information about the film can be found at www.allthingsbakelite.com. Registration is required. Please register at www.cheshirelibrary.org or call 203-272-2245, ext.4

    Contact: Kathleen

Join us for this fascinating documentary Pearl Harbor: Into the Arizona. The USS Arizona has been resting on Pearl Harbor's ocean floor for the past 76 years. For the first time since it was destroyed in 1941, scientists have the technology to take an in-depth look inside the ship. Once considered the pride of its fleet, the Arizona has taken on drastic changes in the shallow waters of the Pearl. This comprehensive search of the USS Arizona sheds light on one of the darkest days in American history. The discoveries made inside the ship are a stark reminder of all those who paid the ultimate price for their country. The expedition retells personal stories of survivors who lived through Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It also brings a survivor who was aboard the Arizona back to see the ship for what might be one last time. A sight he never thought he'd see again.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Movement For Your Busy Life Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Kathleen

In this fast-paced world it seems impossible to fit in any kind of exercise or movement into our work day. Many of us are chained to the desk, phone or computer and are buried under an ever-growing Inbox. However, a little movement can rejuvenate the mind and body and actually increase productivity without increasing the number of work hours. In this session. Mary Hurley, holistic health coach and certified personal trainer, will teach you a series of breathing techniques, stretching and strengthening movements that can be done throughout your work day with no need for equipment.

A special thank you to the Friends of the Library for their funding.
