Have you ever rushed through the day going from activity to activity on auto-pilot?  Eating without tasting and looking without seeing?  Children are leading an increasingly busy life with school, sports events, music lessons and more. So they also experience that rushed pace.  Mindfulness techniques train you to pay attention to those things in the present moment in a nonjudgmental and accepting manner. This gives children the opportunity to stop and choose a response thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively.

This program will meet on the third floor of the library.

Registration required starting June 22.

Ages 4-6

Roman Holiday – 1953 - 118 minutes

Princess Anne embarks on a highly publicized tour of European capitals. When she and her royal entourage arrive in Rome, she begins to rebel against her restricted, regimented schedule. One night Anne sneaks out of her room, hops into the back of a delivery truck and escapes her luxurious confinement. However, a sedative she was forced to take earlier starts to take effect, and the Princess is soon fast asleep on a public bench. She is found by Joe Bradley, an American newspaper reporter stationed in Rome. He takes her back to his apartment. The next morning Joe dashes off to cover the Princess Anne press conference, unaware that she is sleeping on his couch. Once he realizes his good fortune, Joe promises his editor an exclusive interview with the Princess. No registration required.

Buzz Gordo (aka Gary Mezzi) & Tom Smith play music for kids and their folks in the style of artists like Dan Zanes. Buzz strums guitar and ukulele, while Tom keeps a beat that makes it easy for kids to dance around.

They incorporate elements of folk, rockabilly, calypso and other diverse styles, with songs about everything from annoying monkeys, to the pleasures of chewing gum, to an epic rap about Dr. Seuss! Throw in some storytelling (Buzz has been a children’s librarian for years) and lots of movement and participation, and kids from 3-10, and maybe even their older siblings, will have a rockin’ time.

Parents/caregivers will be participating in this program as well through mindfulness exercises with your child and through a book discussion.  The book Mindful Parenting: Simple and Powerful Solutions for Raising Creative, Engaged, Happy Kids in Today's Hectic World by Dr. Kristen Race will be used to discuss techniques for mindful parenting.

This program will meet on the third floor of the library.  This program will meet 8 times, September 3, 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 4:00 pm.

Registration required starting August 15.

Who are our Muslim neighbors? What do they believe? What has been their experience as a result of extremist actions in various parts of the world?

CCIU - CT Council for Interreligous Understanding, the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, and Hartford Seminary are co-sponsoring a series of conversations throughout Connecticut to inform the public about the American-Muslim experience and to discuss some of the concerns about that community raised by the broader American public since 9/11. Four Muslim neighbors will informally share some of their experiences and respond to questions such as:

  • Why don’t we hear moderate Muslims speaking out against extremism
  • Why do some girls and women wear Muslim dress and others do not
  • What does the Qur’an really say about Christians, Jews and members of other faiths?

American Muslims do not have all the answers, but guests will respond out of their own experiences, raising issues that concern all Americans.

About a month before each meeting, Miss Nicole will select a different book from the series for everyone to read. [We'll make sure that some extra copies are available in the Children's Room!]  At the meeting, we'll chat about what we discovered in the book and do one or more fun activities inspired by that persons life.
