ent_filmproj 1:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Movie Matinee - May Musicals Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Show Boat – 1951 – 107 minutes

The 1951 film version of Show Boat was adapted from the original 1927 stage musical by John lee Mahin after Jack McGowan and George Wells had turned in two discarded screenplays, and was directed by George Sidney. Take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganza on its own terms, and it boggles the eyes, not to mention the ears. The daughter of a riverboat captain falls in love with a charming gambler, but their fairytale romance is threatened when his luck turns sour. Filmed in the typical MGM lavish style, this version is the most financially successful of the film adaptations of the play: one of MGM's most popular musicals, it was the third most profitable film of 1951. Although arguably one of the studio's less inventive film musicals, the film is more overtly cinematic than the 1936 version.

    Contact: Maria Brandriff   203-272-2245 x 3019   mpb@cheshirelibrary.org
Former U.S. Congressman Bob Steele will discuss and sign his new novel, The Curse: Big-Time Gambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town.  Steele’s novel, which has generated wide interest across the state, comes at a time when Connecticut’s casinos face the prospect of heavy new competition from New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, and there is growing political pressure to legalize Internet gambling.
The novel is set against the casino gambling explosion that hit southeastern Connecticut during the 1990s.   WNPR/Connecticut Public Radio’s John Dankosky calls the novel “fascinating” and Connecticut author Martin Shapiro has described it as “compelling and timely….an epic story of history, money and politics that will make you wonder where America is headed.”  Books will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Who the 'Bleep' is Linda Chorney Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Maria Brandriff   203-272-2245 x 3019   mpb@cheshirelibrary.org

Linda Chorney’s story is the Moneyball of music. You don’t have to be a baseball player to love that story--and you won’t need to be a musician to love hers.

Linda performed her original music for 30 years, taking gigs all over the world, waiting for her big break. At the tender age of 51--with a lot of moxie and a little help from her friends--Chorney recorded the album of her dreams, Emotional Jukebox, earning her a Grammy nomination. She made history as the first completely independent singer-songwriter without a manager, publicist or record label to achieve this recognition in a category of legends like Robert Plant, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan.

The industry, however, was not pleased that an outsider had slipped past the gatekeepers. They tried to undermine her nomination and destroy her career, from accusations of cheating to actual death threats. They were the Bill Buckners, and Chorney was the ball that got through their legs. And, in the end, the industry figured out a way to get a bigger glove.

From the elation to the agony of her hilarious, unbridled, unbelievable underdog journey, this is your backstage pass to the inside story of the Grammys. Fasten your seat belts for a wild ride with Linda, as she sings and eventually lands on the Red Carpet. And get a taste of what the indie artist's life is like--the kind of artist who does it all for the love of making music.

“My Cinderella story didn't turn out the way I had envisioned.
But I took it like a woman.
(Well, more like a teenage boy trapped in a woman’s body)
At least my true story has as much
comedy as tragedy.” Linda Chorney

When the regiment joins up, ready to march into the ferocious battle at Buff Run, the men are prepared to start a war . . . but they aren't ready for how they—and the nation—will be forever changed by the oaths they have sworn for their beloved South.

Local author Matthew Bartlett returns to the Cheshire Library to present "Gettysburg: The Forgotten Day" as part of our spring Civil War Celebration programs.
When talking about the Battle of Gettysburg, we will mention Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge. However, those are events that occurred on days 2 and 3 of the battle. So what, if anything, happened on that first day of battle? Bartlett will share stories of the first day of battle, including how men from CT fought against Confederate forces in a little talked about part of the battlefield.
Bartlett is a 2013 graduate of the American Military University with a Master's in Military History with a concentration in Civil War studies. He has written four books about the battle of Gettysburg, called The Gettysburg Chronicle. He is currently working on book five in the series. Copies of his books will be available for purchase.

    Contact: Jenn Bartlett   203-272-2245   jbartlett@cheshirelibrary.org
Our June pick for the Cheshire Cats Classics Club is Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser.
Theodore Dreiser had a hardscrabble youth and the years of newspaper work behind him when he began his first novel, "Sister Carrie," the story of a beautiful Midwestern girl who makes it big in New York City. Published by  Doubleday in 1900, it gained a reputation as a shocker, for Dreiser had dared to give the public a heroine whose "cosmopolitan standard of virtue" brings her from Wisconsin, with four dollars in her purse, to a suite at the Waldorf and glittering fame as an actress. With "Sister Carrie," the original manuscript of which is in the New York Public Library collections, Dreiser told a tale not "sufficiently delicate" for many of its first readers and critics, but which is now  universally recognized as one of the greatest and most influential American novels.

    Contact: Maria Brandriff   203-272-2245 x3019   mpb@cheshirelibrary.org

With the success of his PBS television show "Paul Bisaccia and The Great American Piano"  Paul introduces a new CD and a new concert program  - The Great American Piano Revisited. The Cheshire Public Library will present this concert as part of their Sunday Showcase series.

Paul’s new concert offering for 2013 based on his CD contains world premieres by Gershwin and others. It is a sweeping panorama of American music- some pieces never before heard.
The concert includes performances of unpublished Gershwin including his now earliest known work – an exhuberant rag, and his last known work, a nocturne for Lily Pons. Also rarely played rags by Eubie Blake and Scott Joplin, Billy Joel’s eloquent “New York State of Mind”, Irving Berlin’s “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, a new arrangement of Amazing Grace written for Paul by the great American composer John Thomas, a rousing “Variations on Battle Hymn of the Republic”, Bisaccia’s own arrangement of the march “Semper Fidelis” by John Phillip Sousa, Gottschalk’s “Tournament Galop” and (it doesn’t get more “up to the minute” American than this) a side-splitting arrangement of the theme from “The Simpsons”. Paul’s talent for making the music come alive with stories and anecdotes will make you want to wave the flag.
This concert is free and open to the public and was funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

The Smurfs (2011).
In the hidden land of the Smurfs, the perpetually happy blue creatures are preparing for the Blue Moon festival. They have no clue that the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is about to follow one of them into their secret world in an attempt to capture their happy essence--a substance guaranteed to render his magic all-powerful. A vortex suddenly opens up and sucks Papa, Grouchy, Smurfette, Brainy, Gutsy, and Clumsy Smurf into the middle of New York City, with Gargamel following close behind. Shocked expectant parents Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) end up with an apartment full of the little blue beings. They eventually befriend the Smurfs and agree to help them outsmart Gargamel and find their way back home. What ensues is a danger-filled, comical adventure that takes the Smurfs from Central Park to Patrick's place of employment and even FAO Schwarz.   Running Time: 1 hour, 43 minutes.  Rating PG.

    Contact: Jenn Bartlett   203-272-2245   jbartlett@cheshirelibrary.org
Our July pick for the Cheshire Cats Classics Club is Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut.
Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes unstuck in time after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.
Don't let the ease of reading fool you - Vonnegut's isn't a conventional, or simple, novel. He writes, "There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick, and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces. One of the main effects of war, after all, is that  people are discouraged from being characters."
Slaughterhouse-Five is not only Vonnegut's most powerful book, it is also as important as any written since 1945. Slaughterhouse-Fiveboasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut's other works.

Our August pick for the Cheshire Cats Classics Book Club is To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf.
The novel that established Virginia Woolf as a leading writer of the 20th century, To the Lighthouseis made up of three powerfully charged visions into the life of one family living in a summer house off the rocky coast of Scotland. As time winds its way through their lives, the Ramsays face, alone and simultaneously, the greatest of human challenges and it greatest triumph--the human capacity for change. A moving portrait in     miniature of family life, it also has profoundly universal implications, giving language to the silent space that separates people and the space that they transgress to reach each other.
There are very few exceptional and miraculous novels that have the power to change their readers forever. To the Lighthouse is one.

Wreck-It Ralph (2012).
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in Disney's Wreck-It Ralph. For decades, Ralph has played the bad guy in his popular video game. In a bold move, he embarks on an action-packed adventure and sets out to prove to everyone that he is a true hero with a big heart.
