Even if your library isn’t equipped with a kitchen, cooking with children can be a fun and exciting way to encourage them to read. Try some different recipes that are easy to use and check out websites that can be accessed for recipes. We will be making - and sampling - a few recipes for different age groups. This is not a repeat of last year's popular session; it is an extension of that workshop, and will feature Main Course recipes. Issues like food allergies, cost, and prep time will be covered as well. You do not have to have attended the previous session to attend this one. Nina Hunt, Head of Youth Services at the Bellingham Public Library, will lead this interactive (and delicious) workshop.

Remote access to the suite of literature databases that Gale offers is now available to C/W MARS card holders with a Worcester barcode. This workshop will give training in online searching of Contemporary Literary Criticism, Contemporary Authors, Something about the Author, Short Story Criticism, Children’s Literature Review, and Gale’s Literature Resource Center. These tools are an alternative to using Ebsco Literary Reference Center. Because of built-in compatabilities, cross database searches can eliminate using multiple paper index volumes. At last, full text results can save the teen with the last minute term paper! This workshop will be led by Elaine Lovely, Literature Specialist, Worcester Public Library.

Breakfast at 9:15; Business meeting at 10:00.
Following a brief business meeting, we welcome George Needham as our keynote speaker.
LOCAL SERVICE IN A GLOBAL WORLD
Among the many challenges we face in libraries today is how to stay relevant in a world where the old verities, especially the verities dealing with information, no longer seem to apply. The publishing industry is in flux, and newspapers seem to be disappearing before our eyes. Information has become a commodity, outsourced and de-professionalized and headquartered in Bangalore. How do we thrive in a world where Google handles more queries in a few minutes than a reference librarian will face in her entire career? George Needham refuses to be downbeat about the changes we are seeing in our profession and in the other professions with which we work. George will help us all take a deep, cleansing breath, then realign our traditional principles and values with the practices and techniques that are needed today in a world where information respects no institutional or geographic boundaries.
George Needham is Vice President for Global and Regional Councils at OCLC in Dublin, Ohio. In 2009, he also opened a private consulting practice, assisting libraries and other not-for-profits in the areas of strategic implementation, staff development, and governance. George has been involved with libraries since the 1970s as a reference librarian, branch manager, technologist, director, and association executive. A frequent speaker at library events, George has also written several articles, contributed chapters to three books, and written hundreds of reviews for Library Journal, Booklist, and AudioFile. His sole brush with non-library fame came as a two-time Jeopardy champion in December, 1994.

You've carefully organized the programs, planned the book discussion groups and created a cozy, tech-savvy YA area ----- but where are the teens? How do you reach out to a population whose sees "being connected" as a birthright? The current generation of teens has grown up with the Internet and computers in their lives, either in their homes, schools, or pop culture. Libraries are in an optimal position to reach out to teens through online methods to market their services. Come find out how online marketing meets the needs of teens and learn some new ways to reach this important group.
The workshop will be presented by Dr. Gayle Bogel, Assistant Professor
at Southern Connecticut State University.
