misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Finding the First Minot's Ledge Lighthouse Lecture Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Victor Mastone from the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (BUAR) will give a presentation on finding the first Minot's Ledge lighthouse. The historic Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse we see today about 1 mile offshore of Cohasset/Scituate was not the first attempt to place a lighthouse in those treacherous waters. The first lighthouse was a unique design lasting a little more than a year when destroyed by a Nor’easter in April 1851. In 2007, the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and several other partners conducted surveys to locate and identify the remnants of the original lighthouse. The lecture will describe these efforts which included remote sensing surveys technologies, remotely operated vehicle surveys, and diver investigation of the ledge. The goals of the project are to use this information to nominate the archaeological components of the site to the National Register of Historic Places, honor the fallen lighthouse keepers, and to create an underwater archaeological preserve. Free admission.

Reel World documentary film series introduces you to thought provoking documentary films for learning about the people and cultures of the world. This month's feature is Tender

In Port Kembla, Australia, a feisty and resilient community group is determined to take back the responsibility that most leave to strangers — caring for their own dead. However, as their plans for a community-based funeral organization gather momentum, they are put to the test when one of their own is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Tender is a heart-breaking and beautiful glimpse of an extraordinary group of people as they take on one of the most essential challenges of human life: its end.

Our Reel World film series introduces you to thought provoking documentary films for learning about the people and cultures of the world. This month's feature is Tashi's Turbine

Set in the grassroots of the Himalayan mountains, Tashi's Turbine is an uplifting tale of a small village's attempt to harness renewable, sustainable energy with the power of the wind. The story begins with the strong friendship between Tashi Bista and Jeevan, who journey from Kathmandu to Namdok with hopes of building a stronger Nepal, one wind turbine at a time. Their first site, Namdok, is a humble remote village in Upper Mustang, which previously relied on sparse candlelight to power through the windy nights. As Tashi and Jeevan work with the villagers, the elements and gusty landscape bring their own set of unforeseen challenges for installing a strong wind turbine.
