Housed in the Concord Free Public Library Fowler Branch, this exhibit mirrors 16th-century Curiosity Cabinets, where a rainbow assortment of specimens were displayed in rooms for personal enjoyment and wonder. In honor of Thoreau’s 2017 bicentennial and love of nature, the show will be included in Concord’s celebration of this acclaimed naturalist, and in the library’s ‘Concord Reads’ program centered around Thoreau’s piece Walking.

Picturing Emerson Gallery Tour

Leslie P. Wilson followed by talk by Meghan Murray

Following a tour of the "Picturing Emerson" exhibit at the Concord Free Public Library with curator Leslie Perrin Wilson, Meghan Murray, the Umbrella’s current artist-in-residence, will present an illustrated talk, "Presence: an Exploration of Identity through Portraiture." Murray, a recent graduate of Skidmore College, will discuss her experience as a portraitist, particularly her senior thesis, for which she created portraits of patients in an Alzheimer’s unit, seeking to tell the stories of people whose lives have moved to another plane. As the same disease slowly took the life and prolific mind of Ralph Waldo Emerson, her talk will draw connections between the philosopher's personal history and her experiences as an artist.

misc_none 7:00 PM Thursday Author Series: Robin Hazard Ray (Main Library) Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Author Robin Hazard Ray will give a talk about her book The Strangers' Tomb in the Periodical Room at the Main Library. The Strangers' Tomb is set in Cambridge's historic Mount Auburn Cemetery amid the changes sweeping New England during the tumultuous period before the Civil War. The gripping plot interweaves the stories of Irish immigrants, fugitive slaves, and ambitious scientists jostling for survival among the fading but still powerful Puritan aristocracy.

Ray studies geology and biology at Brown University, and European history at UC San Diego. A freelance writer and editor, she leads tours for the Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery on themes ranging from glacial geology to gay Bostonians. She is currently writing her second book in the Murder in the Cemetery series.

What do you get when you cross a cookbook with a book group?  A Cookbook Club, of course!

Check out a copy of the next cookbook (starting on May 31st) at the library, pick a recipe (we'll  keep track to avoid duplicates), and prepare it for the program. We'll sample lots of good food, talk about what worked and what didn't, and select future cookbooks.

The next cookbook will be announced at the end of May.

Registration Required.

    Location: Fowler Library
Registration will begin on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 6:00 AM
