misc_none 3:00 PM Concord Festival of Authors Event: New Literary Voices 2017 (Fowler) Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

New Literary Voices

Three emerging writers, Lisa Duffy, Holly Fitzgerald, and Sophie Chen Keller, discuss their writing careers and the creative process and read from their work.

Lisa Duffy received her MFA in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Her fiction and nonfiction can be found in The Drum Literary MagazineSo To SpeakThe Breakwater ReviewLet the Bucket Down and elsewhere. Lisa is the founding editor of ROAR Magazine, a literary journal supporting women in the arts.

The Salt House, Lisa’s gorgeously written, heartbreaking, yet hopeful debut novel, is set during a Maine summer and traces the lives of a young family in the aftermath of a tragedy.

Holly Fitzgerald graduated from Lake Erie College and received a master’s degree in counseling from Suffolk University. FitzGerald worked as a counselor with children and adults for many years before teaching and counseling at Bristol Community College, New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Ruthless River is the ultimate survival story; a wild ride—the wildest—down a South American river in the thick of the Amazon Basin; a true and thrilling adventure of a young married couple who survive a plane crash only to later raft hundreds of miles across Peru and Bolivia, ending up in a channel to nowhere, a dead end so flooded there is literally no land to stand on.

Sophie Chen Keller was born in Beijing, China, and was raised in Ohio and California. Her fiction has won several awards and has appeared in publications such as Glimmer Train and Pedestal. After graduating from Harvard, she moved to New York where she currently resides.

The Luster of Lost Things is a fable-like debut for readers of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, in which a boy with an uncanny ability to find lost objects must embark on his most important search yet in order to save his mother’s enchanted dessert shop.

lib_sherlock_holmes.GIF 7:30 PM Concord Festival of Authors Event: Mystery Night 2017 (Main) Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Join us for the Concord Festival of Authors: Mystery Night

Three mystery writers, Katherine Hall Page, Jessica Treadway, and Joseph Finder, discuss and read from their work.

Page is the author of twenty-three previous Faith Fairchild mysteries and a collection of short fiction, Small Plates. The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at Malice Domestic, she has won multiple Agatha Awards and has been nominated for the Edgar, the Mary Higgins Clark, and the Macavity awards.

In The Body in the Casket, the inimitable Faith Fairchild returns in a chilling New England whodunit, inspired by the best Agatha Christie mysteries and with hints of the timeless board game Clue.

Treadway’s previous novels include And Give You Peace, a Booklist Top Ten Debut Novel of the Year, and Lacy Eye which Publishers Weekly described as a “deftly plotted psychological thriller...a devastating portrait of a family torn apart from both the outside and within.”. She also is the author of two story collections, Absent Without Leave and Other Stories and Please Come Back to Me, which received the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction.

Her latest novel, How Will I Know You? is a pulse-pounding story of mystery, betrayal, and a small town’s dark secrets.

Joseph Finder is the New York Times bestselling author of thirteen suspense novels. His novels High Crimes and Paranoia have been adapted as major motion pictures. Killer Instinct won the International Thriller Writers’ Thriller Award for Best Novel; Buried Secrets won the Strand Critics Award for Best Novel, while Company Man won the Barry Award for Best Thriller.

In his latest novel, The Switch, a simple mix-up throws one innocent man into the crosshairs of sinister government secrets and ruthless political ambitions.

    Contact: Barbara Gugluizza   978-318-3365   bgugluizza@minlib.net

Randall Warniers will give a talk at the Fowler Library about the life and works of novelist Thomas Hardy.

Thomas Hardy is widely considered one of the great writers of the 19th century, yet many readers who were exposed to his books at an early age won’t touch another Hardy novel with a ten-foot pole. Readers might say he is old-fashioned, hard to read, cruel to his characters, unnecessarily dark, and depressing.

This lecture may change the minds of those readers. It is true that Hardy’s novels and his poems can be hard to defend. They are often dark, yet beautifully so, and have a Shakespearean dimension of character action that results in tragic consequences. So why read him? Because he sees the truth of human experience, and he shows how who we are and what we do affect everything. His writing is graceful and elegant as well as forceful and profound. Give him another chance, and another read.

Randall Warniers has pursued interests in 19th-century British literature and early 20th-century American cinema for decades. He has worked in the world of publishing since 1989, and he is currently a freelance editor and book publisher.
