The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

The Children’s Room is hosting this unique program on the third Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Readers, age 12 and under, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children who are reading on their own - age 12 and under. All volunteer teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.

In the present day, Etta Spencer is a 17-year-old promising violinist. But after a tragic night, Ella awakens aboard a ship in 1776, and learns that her mother may be responsible for hiding a time travel device from Cyrus Ironwood, a man with a shady agenda. With few clues, Etta must search with freed slave Nicholas, who’s been charged with returning the device to Cyrus.
