The Cumberland Public Library Teen Book will meet Saturday 1/28 from 2 - 3 PM. We're reading The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron:

Nadia lives in the city of Canaan, where life is safe and structured, hemmed in by white stone walls and no memory of what came before. For every twelve years the city undergoes the Forgetting, a chaotic day of no remorse, when each person's memories -- of parents, children, love, life, and self -- are lost. If it were not for the books in which inhabitants are required by law to record the events of their lives, they would have no way of knowing what happened before the Forgetting, or even of knowing their names or who their families are. Nadia is different. She remembers everything, and she sees how people lie and erase truths in their books. The next Forgetting is just a few weeks away, and Nadia is determined to avoid its horrors and keep her family and their memories together. She may have help from the handsome Gray (if he can be trusted), but they will have to fight an unseen enemy that threatens both their city and their own existence.

Pick up a copy at the circulation desk (books should be available by Sunday 1/8). This program is for middle and high school students. Space is limited. For further information or to sign up, please contact the Teen Services at 333-2552 x6 or teens@cumberlandlibrary.org.

It will be a potluck club and recipe swap all in one!  Members will make a dish and bring copies of the actual recipe to share.  Recipes can come from cookbooks, family recipes, the internet, or can be an original masterpiece!

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

Back by popular demand… Project CHICK!

Children of all ages are invited to join us for this special event from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room.  A farm educator from Historic New England’s Casey Farm in Saunderstown will read a story and introduce children to a live hen.  A display of various bird eggs – from hummingbird to ostrich will be available for viewing.

The Children’s Room will receive fertilized eggs and all the supplies necessary to incubate a clutch of eggs.  Patrons can keep an eye on the incubator for 21 days until our chicks hatch.

The baby chicks will go back to Casey Farm on Friday, April 21st after our second Project Chick program from 2:00-3:00 p.m.  If you are unable to make the first program on March 22nd, be sure to mark your calendar for this event or come to both.  Children will hear a story and be able to pet a live hen and hold our chicks one last time.

This program features live animals.

Tickets for both events will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Monday, March 13th  in the Children’s Room.  Tickets are 50¢.
