The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer and teacher, Martha Douglas-Osmundson. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

Do you love reading? Do you love talking about books? Do you love eating? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” (and who doesn’t love stories & snacks?), then this is the perfect program for you! The Cumberland Public Library is holding a meeting of “The Very Hungry Bookworms” on Wednesday, February 24th, 2016 from 6-7 pm. We’ll be discussing Ellen Potter's novel, Olivia Kidney. Olivia has just moved with her dad into a high-rise apartment building in New York City. It looks totally normal from the outside but on the inside, you can find almost anything! It hides ghosts, pirates, princesses, apartments made entirely of glass, and talking lizards! But will Olivia be able to find the one thing she's really looking for - a friend? You’ll have 5 weeks to read the book and find out!

When you sign up, you’ll be given a copy of the book to check-out on your card, due back to the library on the day of the meeting.

This program is for kids entering grades 3-5 only. Registration begins on Wednesday, January 20th in the Children’s Room and will continue until the program is full.  You’ll need your library card to sign up, so please remember to bring it with you. The sooner you sign up, the sooner you can start reading! Attendance is limited to 12 children.

    Contact: Reference Department   401-333-2552 x2   reference@cumberlandlibrary.org

Join us for an afternoon of the local history behind the Civil War and the impact it has on us today.  Civil War historians Frank Grzyb, Robert Geake, Christian McBurney, and Tim Cranston have covered all aspects of the war in their writings from the battle fronts to the daily lives of the Rhode Island soldiers on the battlefield.  Maybe most interesting are the connections between the state, the Underground Railroad, and our connection to slavery. The repercussions are still felt in race relations in the state today. Join these experts and understand a new side of Rhode Island you may never have known existed.  This event was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of America, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading aloud with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting this fun program on the third Thursday of the month from January through May, from 6-7 pm. The dates for this reading program are January 21, February 18, March 17, May 19, 2016 and will have a drop-in format, no registration required. Please note: Paws to Read will not be held in April. Children, ages 6-12, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children ages 6-12 only. All volunteers teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.
