This program is for children in 3rd - 5th grades only.

Space is limited to 12 kids. You may register in-person starting Wednesday, March 4th. The earlier you sign-up, the sooner you can start reading! Copies of the book will be available for check-out at the Cumberland Public Library. Please bring your library card.

Did you know about the mid-air collision of two Air Force jets over Cumberland in the 1950s?  Or that a WWII aircraft crashed in the same location years before?  If not, then you might enjoy local author and historian Jim Ignasher’s presentation on Monday, April 13, at 6:30 pm, when he will talk about forgotten aviation tales of the Blackstone Valley region.

Come hear tales you’ve probably never heard before such as how a perfectly sound  Army fighter plane simply vanished from formation on a training flight over northern Rhode Island, and how a chance meeting between two pilots in Smithfield in 1932 affected the outcome of World War II.  And somewhere out there, a Cranston naval lieutenant and his aircraft are still waiting to be found.  Perhaps you can help solve a mystery.

Jim Ignasher has been interested in history since his youth, and in recent years began writing about it. He searches for long forgotten stories that other writers may have overlooked, thus hoping to give his readers a new perspective.  He has written three books on Rhode Island history and co-authored a fourth, and has written numerous local history articles for Your Smithfield Magazine, and currently writes for the newly established Smithfield Times.  Jim is active with the Historical Society of Smithfield, which operates and maintains the historic Smith-Appleby House Museum, and enjoys giving talks and presentations to various groups and organizations as a way of sharing history’s “forgotten tales.”

Those interested in registering for the presentation or to ask questions about the series can call the library at 333-2552 x2 or can email Aaron Coutu at acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.

URI Master Gardener Mitch Williams joins us this evening for a lesson in food safety.  Everyone knows one of the best benefits of having your own garden is that you can control the pesticides and other chemicals that big farmers often use.  However, you still need to be sure to maintain good habits from harvest to table to ensure your family is getting the most benefit from your hard work.  You will not want to miss this evening's presentation in order to make your garden the healthy investment you wish it to be.
