Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting this unique program on the third Thursday of the month from September- December from 5:30-6:30 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Readers, age 12 and under, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children who are reading on their own, age 12 and under, only. All volunteers teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

The Cumberland Public Library will hold a Teen Book Discussion on Wednesday, 12/28 at 2:00 pm. The group will be discussing I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.

cover of bookAs young teens, twins Noah and Jude had an inseparable bond despite their outer differences: Noah was a passionate but introspective artist bound for art school, while Jude was a daredevil and hugely popular. But three years later, their bond has severed and they’ve switched roles: Jude is admitted to Noah’s dream school and he has given art up entirely. She has become sullen and antisocial while he has taken to dangerously diving off the local cliffs. Noah and Jude each have their own side to the story that tore them apart, but they’ll have to come together to find the bond they used to share.

We'll do an art activity while we discuss the story to fit with Noah and Jude. Copies are available to be checked out at the circulation desk.

Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting this unique program on the third Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Readers, age 12 and under, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children who are reading on their own - age 12 and under. All volunteer teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.
