This four week series presented by the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art will take us through various types of animation!  Each participant will have the opportunity to create their own movie short.  Participants must sign up for each individual session.  Some topics we will cover are:

Object Animation: Learn about “persistence of vision,” the name often given to the way the human brain blends sudden changes into smooth motion. This interpretation by our brains is what makes movies possible. Make a mini-animation (a thaumatrope) to take home, and work in small groups to make your own stop-motion film using found objects.

Cut Paper Animation: Focus on 2 dimensional or “cut-out” animation. After viewing some professional “cut-out” short films, make your own 2-D puppets and backgrounds. Work in small groups to make your own stop-motion film using your newly created materials.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Cumberland Public Library.

Local photographer Kevin Hayden of Cumberland will be exhibiting a number of his painting, photographs, and sculptures in the Cumberland Public Library’s Hayden Art Gallery during the month of June. The exhibit will be accessible whenever the library is open.  As part of the exhibit, the library will be hosting an artist meet and greet on Thursday, July 14 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Many of the pieces Hayden is including in his exhibit were taken during his travels to exotic locations around the world, and others capture the beauty found in the region of New England.

Hayden first became interested in photography through a friend of his in high school.  It quickly became clear to Hayden that this friend was an amazing photographer.  “He had such technical skill and a great eye.  I was so jealous of his abilities and always wanted to match his creative skills.  Deep down, I knew I had a good eye, as well,” said Hayden thinking back on his inspiration.

Knowing that he wanted to explore the “good eye” he thought he had, Hayden personally got started in photography and filmmaking after returning from the Gulf War in 1991.  While deployed in Kuwait, Hayden became even more interested in expressing things visually. “My motivation is to view the things around us from a different perspective and allow others to see these things in a different context.”

While he originally worked in black and white architectural and landscape photography, he has always been fascinated by “urban ruins” and similar subjects.  No matter the subject, Hayden aims to convey what he is seeing from a unique perspective.

Hayden has dedicated his exhibit in the Library’s art gallery to his daughter, Molly, who is currently in Hasbro Children’s Hospital battling leukemia.  Molly is an aspiring photographer, and Hayden has been encouraged to show his work because of her encouragement.  A portion of any proceedings from this exhibition will go to the Izzy Foundation (http://theizzyfoundation.org) and the Tomorrow Fund (http://www.tomorrowfund.org) to support families with children with cancer and other illnesses.  For more information about the organizations, please feel free to visit their websites.

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x128 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.  Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.

Many athletes today are incorporating yoga as a way to improve their
athletic performance.  As a 6,000 year old mind-body practice, yoga helps
create strong, lean flexible muscles, strengthens the core, enhances range
of motion of the joints, and prevents and reduces potential injuries.
Other benefits of yoga include improved concentration, focus, and balance,
while reducing tension and anxiety.

Through yoga poses and breathing exercises, discover how yoga can be part
of your athletic training! No yoga experience necessary.

Please bring a yoga mat and wear modest, comfortable clothing you can move
in. Yoga is practiced barefoot for your safety.  All parents of teen
participants must sign a consent and waiver form prior to participating in
the yoga class.

Teens ages 13-18 welcome.  Please pick up a release form at the reference desk.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Cumberland Public Library.

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

They have played clubs, concert series and countless stages across Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

With their signature family-harmony sound on display, Jesse and Jack perform as a duo or with a full band alongside drummer, Matt Dube, and bassist, John Savage.
