Join us for a silent reading party!!!  Adults and teens 15+ are invited to join us on the front lawn (or Community Room in the case of inclement weather) to experience the fun of "group reading".  The beauty of this event is that you are sharing a common space, but the adventure is up to you.  Bring your current read or an old favorite. The only rule is no talking on party property.  We will be playing some soothing background music for ambience, but the point is to enjoy the beautiful Fall weather and the monastery grounds as you take time for yourself and just enjoy a book.  Kick off your weekend with a relaxing morning at the library!

Buried AliveWhat would it be like to be buried alive?  It was a common fear among people who lived during the Victorian Era … so much so that they made arrangements to help rescue people that might find themselves in that situation.  If you want to know more about this scary situation and other strange tales of being buried alive, the Cumberland Public Library will be hosting local author and historian Jim Ignasher on Wednesday, October 12, at 6:30 pm for a presentation on this topic..

Come hear tales you’ve probably never heard before such as how there was a man who was legally declared a corpse while still alive.  Learn about the man who made a living at playing dead.  These are just some of the interesting and spooky stories you will hear at this fun and scary presentation.

Jim Ignasher has been interested in history since his youth, and in recent years began writing about it. He searches for long forgotten stories that other writers may have overlooked, thus hoping to give his readers a new perspective.  He has written three books on Rhode Island history and co-authored a fourth, and has written numerous local history articles for Your Smithfield Magazine, and currently writes for the newly established Smithfield Times.  Jim is active with the Historical Society of Smithfield, which operates and maintains the historic Smith-Appleby House Museum, and enjoys giving talks and presentations to various groups and organizations as a way of sharing history’s “forgotten tales.”

Those interested in registering for the presentation or to ask questions about the series can call the library at 333-2552 x2 or can email Aaron Coutu at acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.

Lizard Radio by Pat SchmatzThe Cumberland Public Library will hold a Teen Book Discussion on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 pm. The group will be discussing the thriller Lizard Radio  by Pat Schmatz.

15-year-old bender Kivali has had a rough time in a gender-rigid culture. Abandoned as a baby and raised by Sheila, an ardent nonconformist, Kivali has always been surrounded by uncertainty. Where did she come from? Is it true what Sheila says, that she was deposited on Earth by the mysterious saurians? What are you? people ask, and Kivali isn't sure. Boy/girl? Human/lizard? Both/neither? Now she's in CropCamp, with all of its schedules and regs, and the first real friends she's ever had. Strange occurrences and complicated relationships raise questions Kivali has never before had to consider. But she has a gift--the power to enter a trancelike state to harness the "knowings" inside her. She has Lizard Radio. Will it be enough to save her?

Local artist Marlena Davis of Cumberland will be exhibiting a number of her paintings and photographs in the Library’s Hayden Art Gallery during the month of October. The exhibit will be accessible on the second floor whenever the library is open.  As part of the exhibit, the library will be hosting an artist meet and greet on Saturday, October 15 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.

Davis is a mental health advocate, a behavior specialist, a volunteer, a left-hander, a vegetarian, a photographer, an animal-lover, an artist, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a friend who lives with PTSD, depression and anxiety.  Marlena received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island, attained a Masters of Arts in Counseling from Rhode Island College, and completed the coursework portion for the CAGS program in Mental Health Counseling at RIC.  Davis, who has worked with youth with autism and other developmental disabilities at the Groden Center for over 18 years, was voted teacher of the year by her peers in 2013.

Davis is an artist who creates mostly in the mediums of photography, drawing, painting, mixed media, and ceramics.  She has taken a few assorted art courses, but is mostly a self-taught artist. She operates a small photography business, Pix By Marlena, where she sells prints and a yearly calendar.  She has also participated in a photo a day project for the past 6 years, which she posts on her Pix By Marlena Facebook page.

When describing her art, Davis said, “For me creating art helps me express those emotions I cannot find the words for.  It helps me process these feelings, provides an outlet to express them, and then helps me to let them go.  Color is one way I use to make my feelings come alive in my art.  Sometimes photography helps remind me of what is beautiful and good in the world and sometimes photography can show just the opposite.  My art gives me a way to express a part of me to others that has been hidden from the world in the past.”

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x128 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.  Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting this unique program on the third Thursday of the month from September- December from 5:30-6:30 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Children, ages 6-12, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children ages 6-12 only. All volunteers teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.
