Contact: Liz Gotauco, Teen Services Coordinator   401-333-2552 x6   liz@cumberlandlibrary.org

Teen girl paintingTeen artists: As part of Teen Read Week in October, we're taking submissions for a teen art show inspired by the theme, "Unleash Your Story."  Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to submit a piece of art that would be the book cover of your biography. The artwork can be in any format or medium as long as it's 2D and no bigger than 9" x 12". It can include text but it can also just be the "cover art." Submissions can be dropped off starting September 18 and are due by October 8, as art show will run in the library's Teen Center and on our social media pages in October. To submit, please drop pieces off at the Teen Center desk on the second floor (or to the Reference desk if the teen librarian isn't in).

We will raffle off a $25 giftcard to Blick Art Materials in Providence to teens who enter the art show!

Any questions? Please contact Teen Services librarian Liz Gotauco. (Contact info above.)

Choosing the right credit card for your needs and avoiding predatory lenders is a concern for everyone.  Finally, Mike will share with you the best (and least expensive) ways to get out of debt if you find you are already in over your head.  This is great information for everyone, but essential if you want to buy a home, get a small business loan, or make another big life move in the next few years. Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting a unique program, Paws to Read, on the second Thursday of the month, September through December, from 5:30-6:30 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Readers, age 12 and under, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children who are reading on their own - age 12 and under. All volunteers teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

The Library will be showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 20 at 8:00 pm.  Learn how to do the “Time Warp” and have a chance to watch the movie with a large group of people.

This adults-only program welcomes long-time fans and newbies to have the full viewing experience in watching this classic cult favorite.  It's the weird and wonderful as newly engaged couple Brad and Janet encounter a problem when they car halts in the rain. They both look for contact only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter a transvestite. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to remain there? Especially when a large group of Transylvanians dance to the 'Time Warp', Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man and a whole host of participation for the audience to enjoy.

Participants are encouraged to register as space will be limited.  Participants are also welcome to bring their own prop kits.  You can find a list of items to include in your kit at
http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/proplist.php.  The library just asks that you do not bring the messier items on the prop list.  The library will also have props available for use by attendees.

massaging a baby

The Children’s Room is offering a Baby Massage Class to families.  This free program will take place on two consecutive Saturdays: October 21 and 28, 2017 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. and is limited to babies birth to 6 months old that are non-crawlers.

The Baby massage class will be taught by Patricia Paioni, a certified instructor.  Using grapeseed oil, which will be provided by the library, the instructor will teach families how to properly and safely massage their babies. Studies have shown that massaging an infant can reduce crying and fussiness, help him/her sleep more peacefully, and alleviate common wail-inducers like constipation and colic.  Please be aware that the babies will be unclothed for the massage.  Participants are asked to bring a soft blanket or towel for their baby to relax on.  The blanket or towel may get massage oil on it during the class.

Register for the Baby Massage class online beginning October 7, 2017. This new program is limited to 10 families and will take place in the Children’s Program Room. Please plan to attend both dates, October 21 and October 28.

    Contact: Aaron Coutu   401-333-2552 x2   acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org

During the month of October, Lauren Gorman of North Providence will be presenting her oil paintings on canvas and charcoal drawings in the Library’s Hayden Art Gallery for an exhibit.  The exhibit will be accessible on the second floor whenever the library is open.  As part of the exhibit, the library will be hosting an artist meet and greet on Saturday, October 28 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

Gorman was born and raised in Rhode Island. She is a graduate of Assumption College with a bachelor's degree in graphic design. She started her college career as a pre-med major. As part of that program, she had to take art as an elective for my major. In that art class, she found herself spending more time in the art studio than the chemistry lab, which encouraged her to change her major.  From that moment on, art became the focus of her life. Over the years, Gorman has had the chance to work with many talented individuals and see some of the most beautiful art from around the world. She is thankful for every opportunity that has come my way.

Now, Gorman works for the Community College of Rhode Island bookstore, where she maintains the store’s website and helping students. After work, she grabs her paint and brushes and starts the next piece of artwork. Looking at the approaching exhibit entitled “Playlist” at the library, she reflected “having my own show is my biggest dream becoming a reality. I want to thank my family, my boyfriend, and my friends for all they have done to help me get to this point. I could not have done this without you and I love you all.”

For Gorman, her “art is a reflection of the songs that are coming through my headphones. That was my inspiration for this show, every piece was created with a song in mind.”

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x128 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.  Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.
