The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer and teacher, Martha Douglas-Osmundson. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

She currently teaches watercolor acrylic and oil painting to adults and a variety of classes to children. The other exhibiting artists are area students ranging in age from 5 to 82.

Krobath's passion to create bloomed early. At age 9 she longed to paint with oils. At that time, painting supplies topped her gift wish list, even though her mother, also an artist, thought she was too young. Once she did receive a set, however, she used them quite often on her own.

Her paintings can be found in private collections and in corporate collections, including that of the Nippon Club in Manhattan. The late Gilda Radner had a custom shirt designed by Krobath, and Drew Barrymore's photograph appeared in People magazine sporting one of her Persian cat designs. Wildlife is a personal favorite when looking for inspiration for a painting.

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x128 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.  Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.
