The Symphony:  Video Lecture Series

Join us to listen and learn about some of the greatest composers and their symphonies of the past 300 years!

In this Great Courses video lecture series, music historian Professor Robert Greenberg guides the listener through a survey of the symphony, from it's inception as a classical form to the modern era.  You will learn about the composers and the masterpieces they created, some well-known and others overlooked and in need of our attention.

Each week, we will present two lectures, 45-minutes each, with a break for refreshments in between.  You may attend any lecture(s) on its own or come for the entire series. Our lectures will cover the following topics:

October 11:  Introduction, the Concerto and the Orchestra

October 18:  Classical Masters, Haydn

October 25:  Mozart, Beethoven

November 1:  No video lecture

November 8:  Schubert, Berlioz

November 15:  Mendelssohn, Schumann, Franck, Saint-Saens

November 22:  No video lecture

November 29:  Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler

December 6:  Nielsen, Sibelius, Ives

December 13:  Copeland, Barber, Harris, Schuman

December 20:  Messsiaen, Shostakovich

Refreshments will be served.

Children can come to the library and practice reading to the best listener - a dog! Three therapy dog teams will be at the Swarthmore Public Library to meet with beginning and reluctant readers and to listen to children (Kindergartners and older) read a book of their choice. This is also an ideal opportunity for English language learners.

This very popular program is held two Thursdays each month. Registration required. Each child will get a time slot within the 6:30-7:30 window. Email Mr. Scott at swcsd@delcolibraries.org to request a specific time.
