The Mad Poets Society and the Swarthmore Public Library presents

A Poetry Month Reading

By Dilruba Ahmed

Wednesday, April 5 at 7pm

Don’t let National Poetry Month slip away without making time to listen to a few well-chosen words.  We gratefully acknowledge the Mad Poets Society for sponsoring a reading at Swarthmore Public Library By Dilruba Ahmed.  Ms. Ahmed is the author of Dhaka Dust (Graywolf, July 2011), winner of the 2010 Bakeless Literary Prize for poetry, selected by Arthur Sze and awarded by the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.

Ahmed’s poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Cream City Review, New England Review, New Orleans Review, Drunken Boat, and The Normal School. Her work also appears in Indivisible: Contemporary South Asian American Poetry.

Swarthmore Public Library & Fair Districts PA present:

Gerrymandering: a panel discussion

Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:30pm

Fair Districts PA will feature:

Rep. Leanne Krueger-Braneky, PA State Rep.

Peter Mardinly, Fair Districts PA

Ben Geffern, Public Interest Law Center

Fair Districts PA is a coalition of citizens and organizations who believe that in American democracy, elections should represent the will of all the people, not just the politicians, and should provide citizens with meaningful choices in electing representatives.

When partisan politicians manipulate voting maps to keep themselves and their parties in power, they shape election outcomes before the first vote is cast. When that happens, voters feel they have no voice, and legislators feel less need to listen to constituents.

Fair Districts PA believes that Pennsylvania needs to reform its redistricting rules and make the process of drawing districts impartial, transparent and accountable - promoting competitive elections and partisan fairness so our government truly is of, by and for the people.

All programs are free and open to the public.  To register, please call 610-543-0436 or email swarthmore@delcolibraries.org.

Unnecessary Risks: an author talk

By Tim Plummer

Wednesday, April 26 at 7pm

It is 1993, two years since the Iron Curtain fell. Lieutenant Colonel Tim Plummer is headed to Russia. He isn’t going to Russia on a military mission, however. He is hoping to reunite with an old friend—the Soviet officer who saved his life in the Sinai Desert during the cease-fire that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Tim Plummer graduated from West Point in 1959. His subsequent twenty-year Army career included travel throughout the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. He served as a cease-fire observer with Soviet officers during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Plummer returned to Moscow to reunite with the Soviet comrade who had saved his life.

Plummer lives in the Borough of Rose Valley, Pennsylvania, where he is a two-term mayor as well as founder and president of a non-profit conservancy dedicated to the betterment of his community. He is a daily lap swimmer and an avid fly fisherman.
