A Room of Her Own: Women in American Art

Look back to boundary-busting, nineteenth-century female artists to help trace the forces of political and cultural change in American history that have both inspired and challenged professional female artists. From the colonial era accomplishments of the Peale daughters to the breadwinning surprises and subversive humor of Lily Martin Spencer to the trailblazing murals and left of center lifestyle of Violet Oakley, this talk covers 100 years of women who found ways to create the rooms they needed to become accomplished professionals in their own moments of history.

LADY BIRD

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Join us for a group discussion of Lab Girl by Hope Jahren.  This is the Longwood Gardens Community Read selection for 2018 highlighting the contributions of women to science.

Book summary: Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. She tells about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classrooms labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and the disappointments, triumphs and exhilarating discoveries of scientific work. Yet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home.

Space is limited so register in advance.  All participants will be entered into a raffle to win free passes to Longwood Gardens.

Join us and Dr. Steve Phillips for another fascinating lecture on ancient Egypt. This time, we'll learn about Egypt’s own

“Indiana Jones,” the well-known Egyptologist, Dr. Zahi Hawass, whose team made an astonishing discovery in Bahariya: a

vast cemetery complex, dated to the Greek period in ancient Egypt, that may contain as many as 10,000 mummies and

related funerary artifacts, many in a superb state of preservation even after more than 2,000 years.

Go on a virtual safari out to the Bahariya Oasis and into its ancient tombs, where gilded mummies lay stacked like

cordwood under the Egyptian sands. Grab your pith helmets and sunscreen!

This seminar, presented by Chester and Delaware County SCORE and Jim Calgiano, will touch on the general principles, vocabulary, channels, targeting methodology and measurement tactics for customer acquisition marketing. Business owners today are often confused and can be overwhelmed at the many options they have at their disposal for customer marketing. And while online marketing get the most attention from the media, there are other options including print, direct mail and even broadcast (TV and radio). This seminar will review all the options and will show you how to "use the numbers" to determine your most cost effective method for finding new customers.

    Contact: Arlene Caruso   6103531022   nedirector@delcolibraries.org

Sales and earnings are not enough to survive, just ask W.T. Grant who had consistent earnings growth, yet went bankrupt. Ask Bernie Madoff, whose Ponzi scheme would have gone on had it not been for the lack of new cash inflows. In fact, the number two cause of business failures is not knowing the difference between earnings and cash! Additionally, understanding the value of time in the cash equation is critical to business survival. This seminar, presented by Chester and Delaware County SCORE and Tom Faughnan, will help you to better understand the differences between cash and earnings as well as provide some suggestions as to how to maximize cash.
