Ben Yagoda Author: The B Side: The Death of Tin Pan Alley and the Rebirth of the Great American Song

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 7pm

Everybody knows and loves the American Songbook. But it’s a bit less widely understood that in about 1950, this stream of great songs more or less dried up. All of a sudden, what came over the radio wasn’t Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin, but “Come on-a My House” and “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?” Elvis and rock and roll arrived a few years later, and at that point the game was truly up. What happened, and why? In The B Side, acclaimed cultural historian Ben Yagoda answers those questions in a fascinating piece of detective work.

A romance for the day before Valentine's Day-

Sally Field and James Garner star in the endearing comic love story, Murphy's Romance (© Columbia Pictures, 1985). Field plays a gutsy divorced mother eager to make it as a horse trainer on a small desert ranch. Enter the town's most eligible widower, Murphy Jones (Garner). The lovable, free-wheeling pharmacist befriends Emma and eventually comes a-courting. But just when Emma may have found the right guy, her ne'er do well ex, Bobby Jack (Brian Kerwin), rides back into her life. Which one of these persistent suitors will win her heart? Garner received his first and only Academy Award nomination for this film.

Rated PG-13, 107 minutes.

Inspired by the resiliency of the characters in Orphan Train?  Join us for a workshop that explores the resiliency portrayed by the heroines in Orphan Train and gain practical tools and a fresh perspective on the roadblocks that we all inevitably encounter.

Orphan Train is historical fiction, so it is based upon the truth. And, the truth is that we all encounter roadblocks on our journeys through life...some small and some rather large.  Our ability to deal with these roadblocks and resolve conflicts very much depends onour self-awareness and our perspective.  Are they problems...or are they opportunities?

This discussion and interactive workshop will explore the concept of resiliency as portrayed by the heronines in Orphan Train and other episodes in human history and look at topics  like change/conflict management, obstacles and influences for change, and taming the flight, fight and fright instincts.

Participants will gain practical tools and a fresh perspective.

This workshop is presented by Sharlene Goldfischer of Quintessence Coaching.  She is a certified coach with over thirty-five years of professional experience helping people find solutions and reach their full potential through training, consulting and coaching.  She specilizes in leadership development and life wellness coaching.

This workshop is free, but registration is required.

Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction or non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

The book selection for March is:  I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (1948, 2003)

I Capture the Castle is the first novel by the British author Dodie Smith, written during the Second World War when she and her husband (also British and a conscientious objector) were living in California. She longed for home and wrote of a happier time, unspecified in the novel apart from a reference to living in the 1930s. Smith was already an established playwright and later became famous for writing the children's classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

The novel relates the adventures of an eccentric family, the Mortmains, struggling to live in genteel poverty in a decaying castle during the 1930s. The first person narrator is Cassandra Mortmain, an intelligent teenager who tells the story through her journal. It is a coming-of-age story in which Cassandra passes from being a girl at the beginning to being a young woman at the end.
