Mourning Lincoln: an author talk with Martha Hodes

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 7pm

The news of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on April 15, 1865, just days after Confederate surrender, astounded the war-weary nation. Massive crowds turned out for services and ceremonies. Countless expressions of grief and dismay were printed in newspapers and preached in sermons. Public responses to the assassination have been well chronicled, but this book is the first to delve into the personal and intimate responses of everyday people—northerners and southerners, soldiers and civilians, black people and white, men and women, rich and poor.

All programs are free and open to the public.  To register, please call 610-543-0436, or email swarthmore@delcolibraries.org.

Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction or non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

The book selection for March is:  I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (1948, 2003)

I Capture the Castle is the first novel by the British author Dodie Smith, written during the Second World War when she and her husband (also British and a conscientious objector) were living in California. She longed for home and wrote of a happier time, unspecified in the novel apart from a reference to living in the 1930s. Smith was already an established playwright and later became famous for writing the children's classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

The novel relates the adventures of an eccentric family, the Mortmains, struggling to live in genteel poverty in a decaying castle during the 1930s. The first person narrator is Cassandra Mortmain, an intelligent teenager who tells the story through her journal. It is a coming-of-age story in which Cassandra passes from being a girl at the beginning to being a young woman at the end.

Witches, curses, and spirits will be the focus of Laurie Hull's presentation, taking place 2 weeks before Walpurgis Night, or The Other Halloween, celebrated in Europe on April 30th. Walpurgis Night is similar to Halloween in that it has to do with supernatural spirits. And like Halloween, Walpurgist Night is of pagan origin. The bonfires seen in today's celebration reflect those pagan origins and the human desire to drive away the winter cold and welcome spring. Laurie is a psychic investigator and a medium/clairvoyant. She has had a lifelong interest in the paranormal and began psychic development study at the age of 13. Living in a haunted house gave her first hand experience with ghosts and was the driving force behind her efforts to understand the phenomena she experienced on a daily basis. She is the author of Brandywine Valley Ghosts, Philly's Main Line Haunts, and Supernatural Pennsylvania. This free event will be held in Garling Hall. This is a Civic and Social program of the PA Forward Initiative.

May's Selection is:  Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.    Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. This means that women’s voices are still not heard equally in the decisions that most affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.
