The first program in our Making Sense of Current Events series will be "Assessing the Threat of Islamic-Related Terrorism." There is no doubt that the fear of Islamic-related terrorism is a politically charged topic in the US. That fear is understandable after the attacks of 9/11 and the more recent attacks in San Bernardino and Orlando. Yet current research from a variety of sources suggests that this fear is vastly overblown. Join us at the Furness Library as David L. Johnston (Visiting Scholar at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Pennsylvania, and the Adjunct Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary and St. Joseph's University) gives an overview of the research and helps us delve into this important topic. The Ridley Township Public Library is offering a free Basic Meditation Workshop led by Rich Conti from the Schoolhouse Center Meditation Group. In 1 hour you will learn all you need to practice meditation on your own, at home.

Meditation requires no extensive training, preparation or effort. It is simple, easy and anyone can do it. A simple commitment of a few minutes a day can make a real difference in a person’s life by helping to clear the mind and reduce stress. The best way to learn about meditation is for someone to show you what to do and how to do it.

This is a health literacy program of the PA Forward Initiative.

Come hear Immaculata Professor William Watson, tell the tale of Duffy’s Cut, a relatively unknown chapter of local history.  Duffy’s Cut, is the site of a mass murder on the Main Line during the cholera epidemic of 1832.  Fifty seven Irish immigrants from Donegal, Tyrone and Derry, stepped off the ship John Stamp in June, 1832, to work on the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad in modern Malvern, and by the end of the summer, they were all dead from violence and cholera.  Archival and archaeological research conducted over a decade has revealed the tragic lives and deaths of these Irish immigrant railroaders, and the work is ongoing.

This program is free and open to the  public.

Coloring for Adults is here at Newtown Public Library! Drop in, pick up some colored pencils and color for your own well-being on coloring pages, all supplied by the library or bring your own. But why coloring?

Coloring actually has been shown to have many benefits for adults. According to WebJunction, many libraries believe that coloring supports health literacy, pointing to research that indicates that it de-stresses and lessens anxiety in adults, and can be especially beneficial to people with brain damage or dementia. Coloring also invites creativity and stretching imagination muscles from childhood that may have gone dormant while fulfilling the responsibilities of adulthood.

Coloring creates social connection, both as a way for the library to connect with the community, and for community members to connect with each other, overcoming isolation and loneliness. It’s also a chance for library staff to help patrons informally with books they might enjoy or information they may be seeking, or simply to introduce people to the other programs and services the library and the community at large offers.

And finally, coloring is just fun! Please join us and see how coloring to happiness helps you.

Radnor Memorial Library, along with its partners Radnor Conservancy, Radnor Bird Town, and Radnor Township’s EAC, invite you to attend our 1st winter and spring conservation film series that features 5 award-winning, outstanding films that will educate and inspire us to become engaged in conservation. We have purchased rights to screen films that were entered at the 2015 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. All of the filmmakers, who are passionate about their craft and the world we live in, love sharing their films with smaller audiences in the hope that it invites discussion after the screening. The artists, who themselves are involved in conservation, hope to empower us in our local communities to get involved.

This month's film:

David Attenborough’s Light on Earth--produced by Terra Mater. Why do animals produce light of their own? For centuries, we could only marvel at the mystery of bioluminescence. Now we can begin to reveal the amazing truth about these living lights. Sir David Attenborough is our guide as we venture into a world he describes as “utterly unlike our own”.

This film series will be screened at Radnor Township Building, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

Please join us and see how coloring to happiness helps you.

med_bag1 2:00 PM Prevent Medicare Fraud Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Did you know that billions of dollars are lost to Medicare fraud and abuse each year? Money lost to fraud means increased premiums for beneficiaries, increased taxes for all of us, and less money available for programs that assist caregivers. In addition to the financial cost, there is a human cost. Medicare fraud diminishes the quality of care received by older adults and can result in the denial of medically necessary treatment. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that you can do something about it.  In response to the problem of fraud, the U.S. Administration on Aging developed the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program. The SMP is a Medicare fraud prevention program that educates people about fraud and scams and what they can do about it. The message is simple: Protect your personal information, learn how to Detect fraud, and know where to Report fraud.

You are invited to attend an SMP presentation, presented by Carol Luby of CARIE (Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly), on Tuesday, March 21st at 2pm. Come learn what fraud is, how you can recognize it, and what you can do about it.

Families are pouring countless dollars into youth sports under the exaggerated belief that it will pay off with significant college scholarships or admissions advantages into elite universities. In his new book, How College Athletics are Hurting Girl’s Sports, Villanova sociology professor and long-time Radnor youth sports coach Rick Eckstein excoriates this expensive and misleading pay to play youth sports system.

Radnor Historical Society is our partner for this event. Former Inquirer reporter and rower Dotty Brown delves river-deep into the history of the city’s rowing culture and the landmark clubhouses built to further it, as well as some of the city’s most enduring characters. It is the first book to lift the curtain on the little-known culture and history of Philadelphia’s iconic 19th century landmark, revealing stories of passion and perseverance along with hard-won victory. With more than 160 photographs, Boathouse Row chronicles the “waves of change” as various groups of different races, classes, and genders fought for access to rowing on the Schuylkill River and the sport itself. Books will be available for purchase.  This event takes place at Radnor Fire Company, located at 121 S. Wayne Avenue, Wayne, PA.  Please park in the municpal or teacher's lot and not at the fire company.  Use the side enterance to the firehouse.

-Secrets of Bumblebees-produced by ORF and Power of Earth Productions in association with ORF-Enterprise. This film follows a young bumblebee queen through the year, to experience with her the life of the bees’ furry sisters.

This film series will be screened at Radnor Township Building, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

    Contact: Arlene Caruso   6103531022   nedirector@delcolibraries.org

This lecture, presented by art historian Fred Dixon, will describe how art history progresses as the art pendulum swung throughout the 19th century. It has been said, “The road to Impressionism goes straight through the forest of Fontainebleau.” That is where the Barbizon painters gathered and they are considered the Pre-Impressionists. But they differed from the Impressionists. Then came Manet who is a great example of how art history progresses. Two of his paintings represent turning points in art history. But he was not an Impressionist although the Impressionists rallied around him and he became like a spiritual leader to the group. Finally, there were the true Impressionists. Paintings by Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir and Monet are now considered the height of serenity and beauty but that was not always the case. See their art and discover how the painting styles of Renoir and Monet changed during their careers. Hear how Impressionism got its name and why it was considered vulgar and ridiculous early on.

Fred Dixon will be available to sign his book “700 Years Of Art History: Pre-Renaissance To Modernism” that will be offered at the deep discounted price of $35.

Fred and his wife Martha began to collect art some 35 years ago. Their home in Chadds Ford has become a mini-museum with roughly 130 paintings and sculpture pieces by artists from 25 countries. They have traveled to major museums in the U.S. and Europe and to the great cathedrals in Italy to view Renaissance and Baroque art. There were two years of art history study at the Barnes Foundation followed by a docent training course. Fred and Martha were docents at the Barnes for ten years. All of this background culminated in the publication of Fred’s book “700 Years Of Art History: Pre-Renaissance To Modernism” in 2013.

June 7, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dean Martin. In his one-man show "That's Amore," Dave DeLuca imitates Martin's relaxed, warbling, crooning voice as he performs signature songs such as Memories Are Made of This, Everybody Loves Somebody, You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Sway, Volare, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, and That's Amore.

Martin was one of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century. He was nicknamed the King of Cool for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness. He and Jerry Lewis were partners in the internationally acclaimed comedy team Martin and Lewis; and he was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack as well as a star in concert and in recordings, motion pictures, and television.

During the peak years of that conflict, a young reporter, Nancy Lynch, relayed the hopes and fears, the joy and tears of hundreds of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines from the state of Delaware through the “Vietnam Mailbag” column she wrote in the Wilmington Morning News. Nancy kept all those letters, and the pictures sent with many of them, neatly folded in their original envelopes. Now, 40 years after she began writing her column, Nancy has written this book, giving a new generation a fresh look at the first-person accounts of troops in the combat zone. Books will be available for purchase. This event takes place at Radnor Fire Company, 121 S. Wayne Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.  Please park in the municipal lot or teacher's lot and not at the firehouse.  Use side entrance to the firehouse.

E.O. Wilson - Of Ants and Men-produced by Shining Red Productions, Inc. This is a two-hour film about the life & extraordinary scientific odyssey of one of America’s greatest living thinkers, E.O. Wilson. Starting with his unusual childhood in Alabama, it chronicles the lifelong love for the natural world that led him to Harvard and the studies that would establish him as the world’s foremost authority on ants.

This film series will be screened at Radnor Township Building, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

In Dave DeLuca's one-man musical tribute "That's Amore: A Century Of Dean Martin, " Dave presents a glimpse into Dean Martin's muiscal career as well as his success as a comedian and film star, and performs some of his signature songs such as Memories Are Made of This, Everybody Loves Somebody, You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Volare, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, and That's Amore. June 7, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dean Martin, one of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century. Dean was nicknamed the King of Cool for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness, he and Jerry Lewis were partners in the internationally acclaimed comedy team Martin and Lewis; and he was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack as well as a star in concert and in recordings, motion pictures, and television.

This free concert will be held in Garling Hall. Library programs are generously funded by the Friends of the Ridley Township Library.
