Learn the history of this 75 year "social experiment" - now recognized as our country's first Foster Care System - which transported an estimated 250,000 homeless children from the streets of New York City to farming communities of the Midwest in search of stable homes. This nearly lost piece of American history has piqued the interest of many readers after the release of the NY Times Bestseller, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.

Audiences will listen to the first person account of orphan train rider Oliver Nordmark as he recalls his experience of traveling with his brother from their NY orphanage to the small town of Bern, Kansas.

The presentation concludes with a discussion of the importance of journaling one's own story as a means of preserving social history. This program is presented by Donna Aviles, a member of the National Orphan Train Complex Speakers Bureau and the granddaughter of orphan train rider, Oliver Nordmark.

We've reached the 1970s in our decade-by-decade look at great films that were nominated for Academy Awards but didn't win.

The China Syndrome (© Coumbia Pictures, 1979) is the white-knuckle thriller that was released just twelve days before the Three Mile Island partial nuclear meltdown. A reporter (Jane Fonda), a cameraman (Michael Douglas), and a nuclear plant supervisor (Jack Lemmon)  attempt to expose the terrifying truth about a facility where an accident could have wiped out Southern California.

Four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor in a Leading Role for Lemmon and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Fonda.

Rated PG.

Witches, curses, and spirits will be the focus of Laurie Hull's presentation, taking place 2 weeks before Walpurgis Night, or The Other Halloween, celebrated in Europe on April 30th. Walpurgis Night is similar to Halloween in that it has to do with supernatural spirits. And like Halloween, Walpurgist Night is of pagan origin. The bonfires seen in today's celebration reflect those pagan origins and the human desire to drive away the winter cold and welcome spring. Laurie is a psychic investigator and a medium/clairvoyant. She has had a lifelong interest in the paranormal and began psychic development study at the age of 13. Living in a haunted house gave her first hand experience with ghosts and was the driving force behind her efforts to understand the phenomena she experienced on a daily basis. She is the author of Brandywine Valley Ghosts, Philly's Main Line Haunts, and Supernatural Pennsylvania. This free event will be held in Garling Hall. This is a Civic and Social program of the PA Forward Initiative.

Poetry Month: Kasey Jueds Reading

Please note CORRECTED DATE: Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7pm

Kasey is a poet living in Philadelphia, PA. She used to think (and still sometimes does) that the statues on Kelly Drive, the road that winds along the Schuylkill River, were her friends. She has been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Soapstone, and the Ucross Foundation. Herbs can be incorporated into any garden, planted in spaces between shrubs and trees, or be grown formally in a garden of their own.  Make you summer cooking more flavorful by learning herb growing techniques with the PA State Extension.

May's Selection is:  Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.    Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. This means that women’s voices are still not heard equally in the decisions that most affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.
