Swarthmore Public Library Presents

The Hundred Foot Journey

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 2pm

Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France is both picturesque and elegant - the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all-out war between the two establishments.

Swedish director Lasse Hallström serves up the cinematic equivalent of comfort food, but if that is your fare of choice then this culinary culture-clash comedy will go down a treat.

--Jason Best, Movie Talk

Linus Sandgren's camera caresses the cuisine like an ecstatic lover. It brought out the foodie in me.

--Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 2pm

The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887 - 1920

Focused on the period 1887-1920, The Artist's Garden exhibition will tell the story of American Impressionist artists and the growing popularity of gardening as a middle-class leisure pursuit at the turn-of-the-20th-century, bringing together paintings, sculpture, books, and gardening ephemera.  The Hundred-Foot Journey (122 min., © Touchstone Pictures, 2014), starring Helen Mirren, is a charming film that abounds with flavors  that burst across the tongue. A stimulating triumph over exile, blossoming with passion and heart, with marjoram and madras, it is a  portrayal of two worlds colliding and one man’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he may be (based on the  studio synopsis).

 Rated PG.

The free program will be held in the library's 2nd floor meeting room. There is no elevator.

Beverages and dessert will be available.

Ben Yagoda Author: The B Side: The Death of Tin Pan Alley and the Rebirth of the Great American Song

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 7pm

Everybody knows and loves the American Songbook. But it’s a bit less widely understood that in about 1950, this stream of great songs more or less dried up. All of a sudden, what came over the radio wasn’t Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin, but “Come on-a My House” and “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?” Elvis and rock and roll arrived a few years later, and at that point the game was truly up. What happened, and why? In The B Side, acclaimed cultural historian Ben Yagoda answers those questions in a fascinating piece of detective work.

Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction or non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

The book selection for March is:  I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (1948, 2003)

I Capture the Castle is the first novel by the British author Dodie Smith, written during the Second World War when she and her husband (also British and a conscientious objector) were living in California. She longed for home and wrote of a happier time, unspecified in the novel apart from a reference to living in the 1930s. Smith was already an established playwright and later became famous for writing the children's classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

The novel relates the adventures of an eccentric family, the Mortmains, struggling to live in genteel poverty in a decaying castle during the 1930s. The first person narrator is Cassandra Mortmain, an intelligent teenager who tells the story through her journal. It is a coming-of-age story in which Cassandra passes from being a girl at the beginning to being a young woman at the end.

May's Selection is:  Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.    Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. This means that women’s voices are still not heard equally in the decisions that most affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.
