Join us as we take you on a tour of the World's Greatest Paintings!

Great paintings challenge us to understand them, to penetrate their mysteries, and to appreciate their riches. But within the vast history of art, there exist only a small number of paintings that transcend the traditional role of art to become cultural signifiers—works that allow us to comprehend more deeply the world and our place within it.

This video lecture series will take place over 8 weeks; come for all 8 pieces or just choose your favorite artist's portion!

August 10: Giotto, Duccio, Van Eyck...

August 17: Botticelli, Bellini, Durer, Da Vinci, Raphael...

August 24: Michelangelo, Grunewald, Titian, El Greco, Bruegel, Carravagio...

August 31: Rubens, Vermeer, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Hals, La Tour...

September 7: Poussin, Claude, Watteau, Goya...

September 14: Delacroix, Monet, Whistler, Degas...

September 21: Sargent, Manet, Seurat, Cezanne, Van Gogh...

September 28: Picasso, Gorky, Pollock...

This Great Courses lecture is presented by Professor William Kloss, M.A., Independent Art Historian

Refreshments will be served.

Contact: Swarthmore Public Library   6105430436   swarthmore@delcolibraries.org

Presented by Fred Dixon, this art lecture will examine what makes Norman Rockwell and Andrew Wyeth two artists beloved by the public, but often attacked by the critics. Hear how Rockwell painted, with a sense of whimsy, the qualities one would like to see society return to. Wyeth was accused of being a hopelessly sentimental painter of rural scenes, but Fred Dixon will argue that the critics never completely understood his work. Often he takes you beneath the surface of realism and doesn’t spell it out for us.

Fred and his wife Martha were long term docents at the Barnes Foundation. They have collected art for 35 years and have traveled to many of the most important museums in the U.S. and Europe and cathedrals in Italy to view Renaissance and Baroque art. Fred’s book “700 years of Art History : Pre-Renaissance to Modernism” will be available at  this event at a discounted price of $35.

Please register.

    Contact: Mary Tobin   610-583-0593   reference@ridleylibrary.org

The term “fake news” may be new, but the phenomenon has been around for a long time. From 19th century broadsheets to the emergence of cable television and internet, the American media industry has been honing a particular approach to reporting "the news" that puts political, economic, and social ends on par with speaking truthfully. But what exactly is “fake news” and why is it such a big deal? After all, isn’t everyone entitled to express their opinion? Isn't everyone working an angle?

In this talk, Dr. Jim Caccamo will explore the different media practices that we now refer to together as “fake news,” and suggest that if we want to see a world that supports flourishing, rather than just winning, we need to find, support and produce media that expresses the truth.

Reel Time Film Classics presents

Amadeus

This is the incredible story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) as told by his peer and secret rival, Italian composer Antonio Salieri(F. Murray Abraham).  Set in the latter half the 18th century, this fictional account of Mozart’s life is set against the soundtrack of Mozart’s beloved works, making the film a feast for the senses.  Based on the stage play by Peter Shaffer that was translated into a critically acclaimed film in 1984 by director Milos Forman, the movie garnered 8 Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture. Amadeus remains a perennial favorite of viewers and critics alike.

Rockwell and Wyeth: The Great American Storytellers, an art lecture with Fred Dixon, will take place in the library's lower level Chadwick Auditorium.

Heare how Rockwell painted the qualities one would like to see society return to, with a sense of whimsy. Wyeth was accused of being a hopelessly sentimental painter of rural scenes, but Fred Dixon will argue the critics never completely understood his work. Often Wyeth takes you beneath the surface of Realism and he doesn't spell it out for us. The lecture will conclude with the firestorm over the Helga paintings and a look at "Christina's World".

Join us to hear from Danielle Shapiro, author of John Vassos: Industrial Design for Modern Life

Vassos conceived a vision for the look of new technologies still with us today. A founder of the Industrial Designers Society of America, he was instrumental in the development of a self-conscious industrial design profession during the late 1920s and 1930s and into the postwar period. There is a strong Philadelphia connection to Vassos' work, particularly his interior design work for the art deco, classic WCAU building at 1622 Chestnut Street. When it opened in 1931, it was a state of the art radio studio and one of the tallest buildings in Center City. It now houses the Art Institute of Philadelphia.

This free program will take place in the library's lower level Chadwick Auditorium. Please register for this event at the library's front desk. Copies of her book will be available for purchase.

This seminar, presented by SCORE and entrepreneur Ky Toure', provides an essential reality check for anyone who's looking to build a professional website. It encourages you to examine the goals of your website before you begin the building process. It is mainly aimed at small business owners, though it can be of use to anyone who is striving to build their first website or update an existing site in a professional manner. The guide is given in an easy to understand manner, so it will be simple to follow even if you don't have much prior knowledge of website building. It is meant as a helpful walk-through for anyone who wishes to have a professional looking website without having to hire a website designer. The word professional is emphasized because the focus of the guide is business websites. While you may use it to build your first personal page or a blog, the aim is to primarily help entrepreneurs. As such, the guide will focus on what's needed to build credibility among a company's target market.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, an estimated 44 million Americans provide unpaid care to older people and adults with disabilities who live in the community. Many caregivers do not feel prepared for this role and were not expecting to find themselves in this role.

At Wayfarers Counseling (https://www.wayfarerscounseling.com/), Laurie and Carol have a special interest in care for caregivers. In their work, they have seen firsthand the emotional toll that being a caregiver can have on individuals and families. They have also seen the positive impact of adequate self-care, support and education. They know it is a challenge. Caregivers often don’t have the time or the resources to access ongoing psychotherapy.

During these two hours, you will receive relevant education including the following:

  •  You are not alone: introduction of participants and current statistics on caregiving
  •  How did I get here? What the caregiver role can look like
  •  Everything has changed: Navigating family dynamics
  •  What about me? Why self-care is important and what it looks like
  •  Where do we go from here? Sharing strategies from participants and offering available community resources.

The workshop is FREE and will be held in the Library's 2nd floor meeting room. There is no elevator.

Registration is required. We must have at least 10 confirmed registrations by Oct. 28 for the program to be held.

First Tuesday Film Theater  Tuesday, December 5 from 2:00 - 4:15 pm. "Theory of Everything" The Theory of Everything is the story of the most brilliant and celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and Jane Wilde, the arts student he fell in love with whilst studying at Cambridge in the 1960's.  Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but stiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age.  He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the sucessor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children.  Over the course of their marriage as Stephen's body collapsed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives.  Registration is required as seating is limited.  Movie is limited to adults.  Primos Library Branch, 409 Ashland Ave, Secane, PA 19018, 610-622-8091
