~~The Norwood Public Library will host an event to launch the publication of  the book  "63-64" with a presentation by its author, Martin Knoblauch, on Wednesday, November 12 at 6:30 PM in the Library, located at 513 Welcome Ave, Norwood.
"63-64, Small Town, Catholic School, Culture and Ham Radio in the Last Year of Simple Innocence" is a memoir about Norwood and St Gabriel School in the year 1963-64 when the author was in the 8th Grade. Knoblauch relates tales of town, family and school in the early 1960s in the context of the larger culture which was about to explode into a much different world.
Knoblauch moved with his family to Norwood in 1957, living there until 1972.  The oldest of eight children, his memoir is as much about a large family and extraordinary parents as it is about the culture and politics when Baby Boomers were coming of age. The subject of his talk will be “Why I wrote a book.”  He will also sign copies of the book and answer questions.

Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction and non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

This month’s selection is: The Blessings by local author Elise Juska

The Blessings are a large, close-knit Irish Catholic family. Living within a short radius of Philadelphia, all four generations of the Blessing clan gather together for every life event, no matter how big or small. When young John Blessing is taken by a fast-progressing cancer, the family comes together as always, offering physical and emotional support to John’s widow and two young children. The years go by, and new trials are faced, from medical emergencies to children leaving for college, but the shock waves of losing John reverberate through the family for many years to come.

With each chapter, Juska takes readers into the life of a different family member, honoring the individuality that blossoms even amid the strong bonds of a family’s deep love. She draws intimate and detailed sketches of each of these characters, but the ultimate portrait is of the Blessing family as a whole. This heartfelt tribute to the ups and downs of a large, devoted family is warm, uplifting, and recommended for readers from families of all sizes. --Cortney Ophoff, Booklist

Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction and non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

This month’s selection is: Kabul Beauty School: an American woman goes behind the veil by Deborah Rodriguez with Kristin Ohlson (2007)

Soon after the fall of the Taliban, in 2001, Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as part of a humanitarian aid group. Surrounded by people whose skills--as doctors, nurses, and therapists--seemed eminently more practical than her own, Rodriguez, a hairdresser and mother from Michigan, despaired of being of any real use. Yet she found she had a gift for befriending Afghans, and once her profession became known she was eagerly sought out by Westerners desperate for a good haircut and by Afghan women, who have a long and proud tradition of running their own beauty salons. Thus the idea for the Kabul Beauty School was born. Within that small haven, the line between teacher and student quickly blurred as these vibrant women shared with Rodriguez their stories and their hearts, ultimately giving her the strength to leave her own unhealthy marriage and allow herself to love again, Afghan style.--Random House
