Swarthmore Public Library Film Discussion Group Presents

Far From the Madding Crowd

Tuesday, September 8th at 2pm

Swarthmore Public Library

Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far From the Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

A thoroughly modern film anyone can relate to - it's like a "what a woman wants" discussion set in Victorian times. It's also an instant classic. ~Graham Fuller, New York Daily News

You can smell the faintly salty air, hear the sheep's insistent bleating, sense the coolness of a spring dew, feel the sharpness of the wind as the seasons change. ~Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Appalachian clog dancing is a truly American form of dance, with roots in Scottish and contra dancing, started on the back porches of homes in the Appalachian Mountains to the tunes of the fiddle and the banjo.

We're offering a free, interactive workshop (for 18 years and older dancers) to introduce and practice this energizing, interesting and above all FUN form of dancing. We four are young at heart, with lifetimes of experience, who hope to encourage new, if mature, dancers. All you need are hard soled shoes and a sense of rhythm. An appreciation of Old Time music could help, but is not a requirement.

Join Meg, Mimi, Karen and Joan, the Kick Back Cloggers, at this fun program. Registration is required, and space is limited to 20 participants.

Are you tired, unmotivated even fearful and don’t know how to make the change you want in your life and your health?  Alexander Technique is designed to address these issues.

Using human remains from Dr. Stephen Phillips' own research, this lecture introduces the audience to scientific methods and techniques through digital images of actual human bones from ancient Egypt, some as old as the pyramids themselves. Participants will learn, in non-technical terms, the basic steps in determining a female from a male, younger from older, and what the bones can tell us about the person. A highlight of the lecture is a re-examination of a possible 3,300 year-old royal murder case using modern forensics.

This presentation will be held in Garling hall. Though geared for adults, it can be enjoyed by middle and high school students as well.
