Unnecessary Risks: an author talk

By Tim Plummer

Wednesday, April 26 at 7pm

It is 1993, two years since the Iron Curtain fell. Lieutenant Colonel Tim Plummer is headed to Russia. He isn’t going to Russia on a military mission, however. He is hoping to reunite with an old friend—the Soviet officer who saved his life in the Sinai Desert during the cease-fire that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Tim Plummer graduated from West Point in 1959. His subsequent twenty-year Army career included travel throughout the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. He served as a cease-fire observer with Soviet officers during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Plummer returned to Moscow to reunite with the Soviet comrade who had saved his life.

Plummer lives in the Borough of Rose Valley, Pennsylvania, where he is a two-term mayor as well as founder and president of a non-profit conservancy dedicated to the betterment of his community. He is a daily lap swimmer and an avid fly fisherman.

June 7, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dean Martin. In his one-man show "That's Amore," Dave DeLuca imitates Martin's relaxed, warbling, crooning voice as he performs signature songs such as Memories Are Made of This, Everybody Loves Somebody, You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Sway, Volare, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, and That's Amore.

Martin was one of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century. He was nicknamed the King of Cool for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness. He and Jerry Lewis were partners in the internationally acclaimed comedy team Martin and Lewis; and he was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack as well as a star in concert and in recordings, motion pictures, and television.

The Ridley Township Public Library is offering a free Basic Meditation Workshop led by Rich Conti from the Schoolhouse Center Meditation Group. In 1 hour you will learn all you need to practice meditation on your own, at home.

Meditation requires no extensive training, preparation or effort. It is simple, easy and anyone can do it. A simple commitment of a few minutes a day can make a real difference in a person’s life by helping to clear the mind and reduce stress. The best way to learn about meditation is for someone to show you what to do and how to do it.

Radnor Historical Society is the cosponsor of this event. Nancy Lynch, author of Vietnam Mailbag, will read letters from servicemen who served in Vietnam from 1968-1972. From the early 1960’s through 1973, hundreds of thousands of men and women served in Vietnam in an undeclared and highly controversial war. During the peak years of that conflict, a young reporter, Nancy Lynch, relayed the hopes and fears, the joy and tears of hundreds of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines from the state of Delaware through the “Vietnam Mailbag” column she wrote in the Wilmington Morning News. Nancy kept all those letters, and the pictures sent with many of them, neatly folded in their original envelopes. Now, 40 years after she began writing her column, Nancy has written this book, giving a new generation a fresh look at the first-person accounts of troops in the combat zone. Books will be available for purchase. This event takes place at Radnor Township Building, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

The Ridley Township Public Library is offering a free Basic Meditation Workshop led by Rich Conti from the Schoolhouse Center Meditation Group. Participants are free to stay for the entire 2 hours, or may choose to leave after 1 hour or more. In this workshop,  you will learn all you need to practice meditation on your own, at home.

This is a health literacy program of the PA Forward Initiative.

In Dave DeLuca's one-man musical tribute "That's Amore: A Century Of Dean Martin, " Dave presents a glimpse into Dean Martin's muiscal career as well as his success as a comedian and film star, and performs some of his signature songs such as Memories Are Made of This, Everybody Loves Somebody, You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Volare, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, and That's Amore. June 7, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dean Martin, one of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century. Dean was nicknamed the King of Cool for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness, he and Jerry Lewis were partners in the internationally acclaimed comedy team Martin and Lewis; and he was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack as well as a star in concert and in recordings, motion pictures, and television.

This free concert will be held in Garling Hall. Library programs are generously funded by the Friends of the Ridley Township Library.

This is a health literacy program of the PA Forward Initiative.
