Mikio Kobayashi and his family live quietly in downtown Tokyo, until one day Kagawa appears, claiming to be the son of a financier who once helped Kobayashi's company.  In return for his family's past help,
Kagawa asks to move into Kobayashi's small apartment with his Brazilian (or is she Bosnian) girlfriend. A myriad eclectic and foreign visitors soon follow.  The Kobayashis' life is turned upside down with comic results.  Affairs, blackmail and rampant youthful partying are only some of the problems they face.

This summer, we're putting a new spin on our popular Teddy Bear Trip program...
instead of Miss Lauren going out on an adventure with your stuffed animal, kids can 'adopt a monster' from the Ridley Library and have some fun!

Adoptions are free, and will last for ONE WEEK (children will pick-up their monster on a Monday, and drop it off the following Monday).
To adopt a monster, you must visit Ridley Library, fill out an 'adoption' form, and sign-up for the week to take your monster home.
Registration will begin May 20. Adoptions will start June 17, and run until August 9.

BE CREATIVE...take your monster home, give him or her a name, bring it on vacation, take it to karate, go get ice cream, read it bedtime stories!
And whatever it is you and your monster do, take lots of pictures, and have fun!!!

Photos will be shared on the Ridley Township Public Library website and Facebook page.

For all ages.
This program is free.
Must register.

Join us as Judy Wicks discusses her book Good Morning Beautiful Business.  Ms. Wicks is best known for her founding of White Dog Café in 1983 which became a pioneer in the local food movement in Philadelphia and was a business trailblazer in running The White Dog through paying a living wage, mentoring inner-city high school students, recycling and composting, solar heated hot water, eco-friendly soaps and office supplies, and purchasing 100% of electricity from renewable sources, the first business in Pennsylvania to do so.

During her visit to the Library, Ms. Wicks will discuss her book Good Morning Beautiful Business: The Unexpected Journey of an Activist Entrepreneur and Local-Economy Pioneer.  According to Chelsea Green Publishing’s website “Good Morning, Beautiful Business is a memoir about the evolution of an entrepreneur who would not only change her neighborhood, but would also change her world—helping communities far and wide create local living economies that value people and place as much as commerce and that make communities not just interesting and diverse and prosperous, but also resilient.”

Copies of Good Morning Beautiful Business will be for sale at the event.

Partnering with HTFL on this event is the Oakmont Farmer’s Market and the Haverford Partnership for Economic Development.  Food at the event will be provided by a number of the Oakmont Farmer’s Market vendors.

It's a summer reading program just for our youngest library friends!
Each week we will focus on one of the pre-reading skills and explore them through fun activities.
At the completion of the program children will earn a prize.
The six skills are:

  • Print motivation - or liking books - means children will want to learn to read.
  • Phonological awareness - hearing words and the smaller sounds in words - helps children sound out written words.
  • Vocabulary - knowing many words - helps children recognize written words and understand what they read.
  • Narrative skills - being able to tell and understand the structure of a story - help children develop thinking and comprehension skills.
  • Print awareness - seeing words - means being familiar with printed language.  It helps children feel comfortable with books and understand that print is useful.
  • Letter knowledge - knowing the names and sounds of letters - helps children figure out how to sound out words.
This program is for children ages 5 and under.
