To everyone at Meridian High School, fourteen year old Michael is nothing special, just the kid who has Tourette's syndrome. But in truth, he is extremely special—he has electric powers. He thinks he is unique until he discovers that a cheerleader named Taylor has the same mysterious powers. With the help of a friend, Ostin, the three of them set out to discover how Michael and Taylor ended up with their abilities. Their investigation brings them to the attention of a powerful group who wants to control the electric teens-and through them, the world. Multiple copies are available at the circulation desk.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; PLEASE BE SURE TO REGISTER EACH CHILD SEPARATELY. ALSO, PARENTS/CAREGIVERS DO NOT NEED TO BE REGISTERED, ONLY THEIR CHILDREN.

The Derby Public Library is pleased to announce a new series of programs designed to create opportunities for typical children and children with special needs (in particular, autism) to play, learn, and build friendships.

Children with and without special needs benefit from being in inclusive environments. Studies have shown that inclusive environments allow children to accomplish more than they do in separate environments. When children with special needs have all of the same opportunities that typically developing children have, they are able to strive toward, and often reach, new goals and aspirations. Inclusive, supportive environments teach children about diversity and respecting and valuing other people regardless of their ability.

Positively Pals will take place on one Tuesday in both May and June with plans for weekly daytime programs during the summer months. The program is open to school-age children, but siblings are also welcome to attend. A variety of activities will be offered throughout the series including art, music, games, stories, and more. The Library will be decorated with flowers in compliance with his father, Colonel H. Holton Wood’s request, which he made at the dedication of the Library in 1902. At that time he asked that flowers be placed throughout the Library every year on the birth date of his son. His request has been honored ever since. Several years ago, the Library also added the tradition of commemorating this special day with a birthday cake. This time honored tradition has become well known over the years, not only throughout the Valley, but well beyond. It has been written about in the New York Times. A memorial plaque in Harcourt's memory is displayed at the front entrance of the Library. The public is invited to visit throughout the day for cake and to learn more about the history of the Library.

Registration for the children’s summer reading program Dig into Reading at the Derby Public Library begins on June 3. The summer kicks off with a live animal presentation by Animal Embassy on Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00 AM (See separate event info. on this calendar).

Children ages 3-11 are invited to join the reading program which runs through Friday, August 16. Participation in a summer reading program helps maintain and enhance reading skills acquired during the school year, promotes early literacy, and can motivate a reluctant reader. Pre-readers, including toddlers, preschoolers, and children entering kindergarten, are welcome to join the reading program by having an adult or older child read to them. It is never too early to experience a reading program and begin a life long love of books. Participants may begin reporting on books read during the week of June 24.

For a complete listing of children’s programs offered throughout the summer, please visit the Library website at www.derbypubliclibrary.org or stop by the Library at 313 Elizabeth Street..
