Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

Enjoy a film from the golden era of Hollywood every Sunday at the library!

This week's Classic Cinema Sunday film is Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), shown in honor of International Holocaust Day (Friday, January 27th). The movie stars Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift.

Nominated for eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Judgment at Nuremberg is a magnificent achievement in filmmaking, boasting brilliant performances by an all-star cast. American judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) presides over the trial of four German jurists accused of "legalizing" Nazi atrocities. But as graphic accounts of sterilization and murder unfold in the courtroom, mounting political pressure for leniency forces Haywood to make the most harrowing and difficult decision of his career. This masterpiece, considered by many as one of the greatest films of all time was directed by the great Stanley Kramer.

Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

Join My Friend's Place Executive Director Susan Ford at the Dover Public Library for an informal discussion about the homeless shelter and how the community can help those in need.

The talk is sponsored by the New Hampshire Harry Potter Alliance, a non-profit library-affiliated community service group that encourages volunteering as a way for fans to become heroes. The discussion will include a brief overview of the shelter and invite attendees to participate by asking questions or sharing their own stories.

My Friend’s Place is the only full-time homeless shelter in Dover and has been home to thousands of people since it opened in 1989. In addition to the shelter, My Friend’s Place also operates four transitional housing units. Approximately 200 people stay at the shelter every year, including 30 to 40 families with children.

Susan Ford was one of these people when she became homeless as a single parent of two in the mid-1990s. She stayed at the shelter for five months and eventually received her Bachelor’s degree in Human Service Administration from Granite State College. Prior to becoming executive director of My Friend's Place, Ford ran the Homeless Center for Strafford County in Rochester and worked at Strafford County Community Action Partnership. She had also served on the board for My Friend's Place for over 15 years.

Familiar Songs -- Unfamiliar Stories:  Beloved and Historic American Songs and their Amazing Stories!

Presented by “Ramblin’ Richard,“ this interesting and entertaining program brings to light the fascinating unfamiliar stories about some of our most beloved American songs- songs like: “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and “Goodnight Irene.”

Richard asks questions such as: What was America’s favorite president’s favorite song, and why was it so unlikely?  What song rose to popularity again after nearly 100 years?  How are “God Bless America” and “This Land is your Land” connected?  What old American song was so beloved that it got the songwriter released from state prisons- twice?  After the questions come the answers…and the songs!

The Friends of the Library present:

"If I am Not For Myself, Who Will Be for Me?" George Washington's Runaway
Slave Oney Judge Staines portrayed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti

Oney Judge Staines, according to the Constitution, was only three-fifths of a person. To her masters, George and Martha Washington, she was merely "the girl." All she wanted was the freedom to control her own actions, but her account of escaping the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia, fleeing north and establishing a life in New Hampshire is not a typical runaway story. Portrayed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, Oney’s tale provides an alternative perspective on the new nation’s social, political, and economic development, from one whose personal experience so contradicted the promise of the principles embodied in the nation’s founding documents.

Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti has combined her expertise in public speaking and interest in conducting historical research with her passion for storytelling and dramatic performance. Quezaire-Presutti studied under Professor Lloyd Barbee at the University of Wisconsin and has been a committed scholar of African-American Studies, in particular women of color. She is listed on the Performing Artist roster at the Connecticut Historical Society Museum, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, and the Social Theatre with Young Audiences of Connecticut Arts for Learning. She received the Institute of Texan Cultures' Director's Award for Excellence, the Greater Hartford Arts Council/ Boston Fund Individual Artist Fellowship, and first place in the International Toastmaster Award competition for Interpretive Reading.

Local author Rodney K. Watterson will speak at the Dover Public Library about his most recent book "Boomtown Portsmouth". Portsmouth’s World War II legacy is well hidden. The city’s narrow streets, which offer frequent glimpses into its heyday during the era of sailing ships and colonial struggles, reveal little of the events that occurred on those same streets during World War II. Yet it is that wartime transformation that revitalized the city and equipped it to move so boldly into the future that it enjoys today. Boomtown Portsmouth tells the story of that frenzied transformation—a story with many subplots: booming navy yard, hordes of immigrant workers, a flood of federal dollars, burgeoning population, unprecedented prosperity, U-boat threats, a mined harbor, blackouts, raucous liberty town, soaring VD rates, massive infrastructure development, and much more. The story concludes with an aggressive postwar plan designed to capture the best and shed the worst of that wartime experience—first steps on the path that led, in time, to the prized jewel that Portsmouth is today. Copies of his book will be available for sale and Watterson will be happy to sign copies.
