This January, the Dover Public Library is proudly hosting local artist, Gerry Smith, for a special show displaying paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces from throughout the artist’s life. This will be Smith’s first public show. The show includes works in oil, acrylic, pastel, ink, and watercolor; pieces from Smith’s early childhood through his most current work.  Smith says, “I've been painting and drawing since I was a little fellow. I am self-trained, starting around 5 or 6 doing Disney characters. I started out with oils and then on to pastels, next was acrylics and now pen and ink and watercolor. I've done many subjects, including still life, animals, scenic places of interest, NH scenes.  And now mostly pen and ink of faces along with added watercolor.”

Smith, a native of Gorham, NH, came to live in Dover in 1969 and worked for Kidder Press on Locust St. in the engineering dept. as a mechanical designer. He retired in 2003 due to the closing of the plant.

Many know Smith as an active member of St. John's Methodist church in Dover. As a member of the Dover Senior Center, he founded the Silver Strummers in 2007, a ukulele group that performs in local nursing homes and day programs often playing his original songs such as “Christmases Long Long Ago” (in Gorham, NH) and “Dover 1623.”

 

The reception will take place in the Reference Room on the Main Floor.

Crime Scene & Spy Science at the Dover Public Library

This class is now full hopefully we will be offering another session in the very near future.

Calling all 5th – 8th graders to join us for a FREE 6 week program beginning at 4:30 on Thursday, January 25th through Thursday, March 1.  We will meet every Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Lecture Hall of the Dover Public Library.

Open to Strafford County and 4-H families and friends (4-H membership not required).  Spend your Thursday evenings learning how to:

  •  Detect fingerprintsReveal secret messages
  • Conduct a mystery powder analysis
  • Extract DNA from substances
  • Reconstruct evidence from a crime

Come join us as we learn how to reveal crime scenes and solve the mystery puzzle pieces behind them!  This program is sponsored by 4-H, UNH Extension, and the Dover Public Library.

When an accident destroys their home, the guardian of the abyss, The Kraken, will send Deep and his friends on a perilous journey to find a new home.

Local educator and The Penn founder Andrew Lapham Fersch will present a film about his alternative education cooperative and will then lead a discussion about the current state of education in America on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30pm. The Penn is for students aged 14-21 and focuses on community and social engagement, experiential education, and choice in learning. The program offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in real-world issues, create your own course of study, go on extended experiential adventures (like backpacking and biking trips).   The film discusses whether traditional methods of educating our children are still the best way of creating productive and intelligent citizens. Open to Strafford County and 4-H families and friends (4-H membership not required).  Spend your Thursday evenings learning how to:

  • Conduct a mystery powder analysis
  • Extract DNA from substances
  • Reconstruct evidence from a crime
