Experience the Love, Light, Wisdom of Reiki Come to the library for an Introduction to Reiki, Demonstration, Book Signing and Music on Monday, February 27th, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

In this presentation Marilynn Carter, Reiki Master Teacher, progressive wellness practitioner, and author at Many Paths for Health, will introduce you to the simple, amazing healing practice of Reiki! If you have heard about Reiki but know little about it, please join us to learn more about this Japanese art. The program includes a brief introduction to Reiki and a demonstration of an exercise to help you feel your own energy. A volunteer from the audience will have an opportunity to experience a few minutes of Reiki. There will be time for questions and answers. Live relaxing background music by well-known jazz guitarist, Steve Carter, will complement the evening.

Copies of Marilynn's new book, Experience the Love, Light, Wisdom of Reiki, will be available for sale and signing. Her book helps you get to know Reiki and see what it can do for you, your loved ones, and your pets. You'll also find information about the energy field with exercises you can try at home. The best part of the book is the more than 50 pages of true personal stories shared by the author, some of her clients, and students.

Marilynn Carter has been working in traditional health settings since the age of 15. Seeking answers to her own health, she began exploring alternative therapies. After experiencing and learning the Japanese healing system known as Reiki, she knew she wanted to share it with others. Since 2002 she has been a practitioner and teacher at Many Paths for Health certified in both Usui and Karuna Reiki. She is also certified in Jin Shin Jyutsu as a Self Help Teacher, certified in Healing Touch, Magnified Healing, and is interested in Chinese medicine, environmental health, and healthy eating. Experience the Love, Light, Wisdom of Reiki is her second book. Her first book, No Fret Cooking, is a healthy cookbook that comes with 2 CD's of music to cook and dine by; its second edition came out in 2014. Marilynn sees clients of all ages, an occasional pet, and has taught people from age 8 to 90; Reiki is for everyone!

Program on 20th anniversary of shootings in Colebrook, NH by New Hampshire author Richard Adams Carey on Tuesday March 7th at 7pm

Join us at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday March 7th at 7pm for a fascinating look at the shocking shooting in Colebrook, NH which took place 20 years ago. 2017 marks the twentieth anniversary of New Hampshire’s version of the Kennedy assassination: that day in August, 1997, when a 62-year-old carpenter named Carl Drega murdered four leading citizens in the little town of Colebrook, in Northern New Hampshire.

People all over the state remember being shocked out of their innocence that day, and as the story became a world-wide media sensation. But the news accounts in Time, Life, Newsweek, the New York Times and more only scratched the surface of an event that had a 25-year prelude, the plot twists of a novel on the day itself, and a poignant aftermath that lingers to this day.

Carey has devoted 13 years to researching the incident, and last fall the University Press of New England published the result. “Carey skillfully leads readers up that day, and past it”—says Booklist in its review of “In the Evil Day”—“creating a gripping portrait of not just the murderer but also an idyllic time, hurriedly erased by shocking circumstances. Carey’s tension-filled report of a small town’s terror is portrayed with surprising love, bittersweetness, and hope, resulting in a beautifully written and enthralling true-crime tale.”

Aside from its historical and literary interest, this is a program that allows us to see how our attitudes towards gun violence (and stories about such) have changed over the last two decades. And of course it’s a story that cuts close to the bone for any New Hampshire town. What happened in Colebrook can just as easily happen elsewhere—unless we remember.

“In the Evil Day” is Carey’s fourth book of literary nonfiction, and it was excerpted last summer in Yankee Magazine.

Richard Adams Carey grew up in Connecticut and is a 1973 graduate of Harvard University. He worked odd jobs, taught for ten years in the Yup’ik Eskimo villages of western Alaska, served on the board and as president of the New Hampshire Writer’s Project, and is now on the faculty of the MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction program at Southern New Hampshire University.

His essays, journalism, and short fiction have appeared in Yankee Magazine, Alaska Magazine, Country Journal, New England Monthly, the Boston Globe Magazine, Hunger Mountain, the Massachusetts Review, and many others. He is the author of “Raven’s Children: An Alaskan Culture at Twilight” (Houghton Mifflin, 1992), “Against the Tide: The Fate of the New England Fisherman” (Houghton Mifflin, 1999), “The Philosopher Fish: Sturgeon, Caviar, and the Geography of Desire” (Counterpoint, 2005), and “In the Evil Day: Violence Comes to One Small Town” (University Press of New England, 2015).

“Raven’s Children” was honored as a New York Public Library Book To Remember, and “Against the Tide” won the New Hampshire Literary Award for Nonfiction.

“Alice’s Ordinary People” documentary screening at Dover Library with filmmaker Craig Dudnick

The Dover Public Library is pleased to be among selected libraries in New Hampshire to screen the powerful civil rights film, “Alice’s Ordinary People” and to visit with its filmmaker Craig Dudnick. Join us on Monday, March 13 at 6:30pm for this extraordinary event.

“Alice's Ordinary People” is a 56-minute documentary about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement.  Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama. Her great contribution to the field of politics is the thread which connects these two men.

Alice’s life story reads like a history of the movement. Early on she fought the “Willis Wagons”, second class structures built to relieve overcrowding in Chicago schools which served the African American community. Their very existence perpetuated segregation.

In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago. Alice and her husband James marched with him, often at great personal risk. It was at this time that Dr. King joined Reverends Jesse Jackson and James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket. Breadbasket fought racism on many fronts, but its main focus was jobs for African Americans, particularly at businesses drawing profits from the African American community.

New England Irish Harp Orchestra at Dover Library March 21 @ 7pm

Join the fun on March 21, at 7pm at the Dover Public Library as we host a performance by members of the New England Irish Harp Orchestra.  NEIHO are a lively band of harpers who love creating Celtic music together and having fun. The ensemble, led by Director Regina Delaney, will perform traditional Irish dance tunes, slow airs, and songs.

Members, who range in age from the mid-twenties to mid-eighties, come from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The Orchestra has been performing for six years throughout New England. They have recently released a new CD, “Another County Heard From”, a collection of tunes orchestrated and arranged by various NEIHO members and friends, and it will be available for sale.

The concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Come and enjoy some great Irish music. For more information, call the Dover Public Library at 516-6050.

Local author Rodney K. Watterson will speak at the Dover Public Library about his most recent book "Boomtown Portsmouth". Portsmouth’s World War II legacy is well hidden. The city’s narrow streets, which offer frequent glimpses into its heyday during the era of sailing ships and colonial struggles, reveal little of the events that occurred on those same streets during World War II. Yet it is that wartime transformation that revitalized the city and equipped it to move so boldly into the future that it enjoys today. Boomtown Portsmouth tells the story of that frenzied transformation—a story with many subplots: booming navy yard, hordes of immigrant workers, a flood of federal dollars, burgeoning population, unprecedented prosperity, U-boat threats, a mined harbor, blackouts, raucous liberty town, soaring VD rates, massive infrastructure development, and much more. The story concludes with an aggressive postwar plan designed to capture the best and shed the worst of that wartime experience—first steps on the path that led, in time, to the prized jewel that Portsmouth is today. Copies of his book will be available for sale and Watterson will be happy to sign copies.

Familiar Songs -- Unfamiliar Stories:  Beloved and Historic American Songs and their Amazing Stories!

Presented by “Ramblin’ Richard,“ this interesting and entertaining program brings to light the fascinating unfamiliar stories about some of our most beloved American songs- songs like: “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and “Goodnight Irene.”

Richard asks questions such as: What was America’s favorite president’s favorite song, and why was it so unlikely?  What song rose to popularity again after nearly 100 years?  How are “God Bless America” and “This Land is your Land” connected?  What old American song was so beloved that it got the songwriter released from state prisons- twice?  After the questions come the answers…and the songs!
