The McConnell Story, 1955, Not Rated, 1 hr. 46 min.

Watch the true story of a Dover native! Come a half hour before the movie starts to learn a bit of the back story behind this remarkable man. Movie begins at 2 pm.

As the alarm wails, Joe McConnell's squad of Sabre pilots are airborne in seconds. The mission: keep enemy planes away from helicopters evacuating wounded infantrymen. The destination: the deadly corridor called MIG Alley.

Alan Ladd and June Allyson star as real-life jet aviation pioneer Capt. Joseph McConnell Jr. and his devoted wife Butch. And James Whitmore is the commander who first recognizes McConnell's prowess as a "tiger of the sky." In war, McConnell became America's first triple jet ace, downing 16 enemy planes. In peace, he braved the unknown as a test pilot in the jet era's infancy.

Starring Alan Ladd and June Allyson.

misc_none 7:00 PM Warfare in Medieval Europe with UNH professor David Bachrach Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

On Monday October 17th at 7pm, David Bachrach, professor of history at the University of New Hampshire, will discuss his new book Warfare in Medieval Europe c. 400-c.1453, and share insights about the complexity, scale and influence of war throughout the European Middle Ages, how medieval military institutions, technology, topography, and organization were built on Roman foundations, and the ways in which the wartime experiences of medieval men and women continue to shape our world today.

Knights in shining armor thundering down a field of emerald grass, ragged bands of peasants carrying notched knives and pitchforks, giant catapults hurling vast blocks of stone at a city wall, these are the images of medieval warfare we see on television and in film. Like many fictional depictions of the past, there is some truth in these tales, but the real story is far more complex and has had  an enduring impact on society up through today.

Warfare in medieval Europe was sophisticated and touched virtually every aspect of medieval life. War, preparation for war, and its aftermath shaped technology, communications, agriculture, trade, and even the practices of the Catholic Church. The English parliament grew out of medieval warfare, as did the naval technology that led to the European conquest of most of the world. Many of the military institutions of medieval Europe such as conscription and citizen militias, which were inherited from Rome, made their way to the European colonies in new world and ultimately ended up in the US constitution.  In short, understanding medieval European civilization requires an understanding of the organization, conduct, and impact of war.

David Bachrach, Ph.D, has taught medieval history at the University of New Hampshire since 2003. His main areas of research are on the military and religious history of medieval Europe, about which he has published numerous books and scholarly articles. Originally from Minnesota, Professor Bachrach now lives with his family in Dover, New Hampshire where he enjoys taking advantage of opportunities to hike and swim with his wife and three children.
