Local author Rodney K. Watterson will speak at the Dover Public Library about his most recent book "Boomtown Portsmouth". Portsmouth’s World War II legacy is well hidden. The city’s narrow streets, which offer frequent glimpses into its heyday during the era of sailing ships and colonial struggles, reveal little of the events that occurred on those same streets during World War II. Yet it is that wartime transformation that revitalized the city and equipped it to move so boldly into the future that it enjoys today. Boomtown Portsmouth tells the story of that frenzied transformation—a story with many subplots: booming navy yard, hordes of immigrant workers, a flood of federal dollars, burgeoning population, unprecedented prosperity, U-boat threats, a mined harbor, blackouts, raucous liberty town, soaring VD rates, massive infrastructure development, and much more. The story concludes with an aggressive postwar plan designed to capture the best and shed the worst of that wartime experience—first steps on the path that led, in time, to the prized jewel that Portsmouth is today. Copies of his book will be available for sale and Watterson will be happy to sign copies.

Presented by “Ramblin’ Richard,“ this interesting and entertaining program brings to light the fascinating unfamiliar stories about some of our most beloved American songs- songs like: “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and “Goodnight Irene.”

Richard asks questions such as: What was America’s favorite president’s favorite song, and why was it so unlikely?  What song rose to popularity again after nearly 100 years?  How are “God Bless America” and “This Land is your Land” connected?  What old American song was so beloved that it got the songwriter released from state prisons- twice?  After the questions come the answers…and the songs!

Tue. April 11, 2017 starting at 6:30pm in the Library Lecture Hall

This is Bill's second presentation of a more northerly and faster flowing river. The party of 10, in five canoes, paddled from northern NWT into Nunavut along the Thelon Sanctuary. The trip covered 170 miles with over 150 rapids in a region seldom visited by man, an area home to a large concentration of tundra wolves and grizzly bears.  The first presentation was very well received so you will not want to miss this 2nd presentation!

Local Author Carl Johnson will discuss and sign copies of his new book “Big Papi and the Kids” at the Dover Public Library on April 17th starting at 6:30 P.M.

The book relives the excitement of the 2016 Red Sox season when David Ortiz led a collection of young, talented players to the American League East Championship.  It follows the team's progress from the end of the disastrous 2015 season through the beginning of what may be baseball's newest dynasty.

Johnson will also have copies of his popular books “From Beer To Beards, Boston Baseball's 2011-2013 Roller Coaster Ride”, and volumes one and two of the “The Baseball Buff's Bathroom Book” series for sale and will sign them too!

“From Beer to Beards” chronicles the ups and downs of the Red Sox from 2011, when they lost a seemingly insurmountable lead and missed the playoffs, through the debacle which was the 2012 season under Bobby Valentine. The story captures all the excitement of 2013, the year of the beards, when the Red Sox came back to win the Pennant and World Series.

“The Baseball Buff's Bathroom Book” series contains 50 essays each about some of the greatest players and events in baseball history. If you are a baseball fan and love to read about your heroes and the old timers you've only heard about, this is the book for you.
