Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00.

There is treasure here but not the pirate kind. Scientific “digs” on Smuttynose Island are changing New England history. Archaeologist Nathan Hamilton has unearthed 300,000 artifacts to date on this largely uninhabited rock at the Isles of Shoals. Evidence proves prehistoric Native Americans hunted New Hampshire’s only offshore islands 6,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split, salted, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. “King Haley” ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region’s first hotel on Smuttynose. Laighton’s daughter Celia Thaxter spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates. J. Dennis Robinson, a longtime Smuttynose steward, explores the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation.  Sponsored by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

J. Dennis Robinson has published over 1,000 articles on New Hampshire history and culture. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Other books include “Under the Isles of Shoals” (2012) and “Mystery on the Isles of Shoals” (2014). Robinson is also editor of SeacoastNH.com, a Web site about NH history and culture that attracts thousands of visitors daily. His lectures are designed to make history both entertaining and accessible to all audiences.

    Contact: Susan Dunker   516-6050   s.dunker@dover.nh.gov

This simple and fun craft is best suited to ages 8+. We'll be creating refrigerator magnets using flat sided clear marbles with a photo or clipping from a magazine sandwiched between the glass and a magnet. Using photos featuring faces of less than an inch in diameter, these magnets would make excellent Mother's Day gifts. Supplies will be provided, but bring you own pictures if possible, or flip through magazines that we'll provide. Magnets take a while to dry so if you have a piece of metal to bring with you to attach the magnets to for the trip home, they'll be more likely to arrive intact. The best thing to do would to be to bring a Sucrets or Altoid tin to place the magnets in for the trip home. This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. We are limited to 10 spaces.
