Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

One hundred years ago, President Woodrow Wilson faced a monumental dilemma about how to respond to the war in Europe, which had been raging for more than two years.  In this illustrated talk at the Dover Public Library on Monday September 25 at 7pm, Kurk Dorsey, Professor of History at UNH and a specialist on US foreign policy, will describe how Wilson tried to make something good from the Great War, first by trying to mediate a peace without victory and then by choosing to intervene in the war on the Allied side.  His decisions continue to reverberate today, as the United States tries to figure how and whether to, among other things, make the world safe for democracy.

Kurk Dorsey holds the Class of 1938 Professorship at UNH, where he has taught History since 1994.  His research interests include US foreign policy, and US environmental history.  He is the author of The Dawn of Conservation Diplomacy: US-Canadian Wildlife Protection Treaties in the Progressive Era and Whales and Nations: Environmental Diplomacy on the High Seas

Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

All over the world, coral reefs face drastic declines in health due to disease, overfishing, rising ocean temperatures, and increased coastal development. Until recently it has been difficult to document these changes, due to lack of detailed baseline information on growth and degradation of coral colonies. The Dover Public Library is proud to present Yasmeen Smalley-Norman, 2016-2017 Fulbright Scholar, who is dedicated to bringing coral reefs to life with new technology. Smalley-Norman will share her unique perspective on this urgent problem in her presentation, “Documenting Coral Reefs with 3D Technology.” The presentation will be based on Smalley-Norman’s recent experiences as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines, where she created over 150 3D models of corals, many of which were endangered and vulnerable species. Please join us on Saturday, October 7, 2017, 12:00 pm, at the Dover Public Library, 73 Locust Street, Dover, NH, to learn about coral reef ecosystems and the high-resolution 3D mapping technology that is providing a new tool to monitor the health of reefs.

Ms. Smalley-Norman, a professional underwater photographer, marine science communicator, and conservationist, has travelled the globe to document the endangered wonders of our oceans through her extraordinary images and 3-D mapping. A scuba Divemaster and Explorers Club student member, she holds a BFA and BS degree in photography, supplemented by her experiences as a Women Divers Hall of Fame scholarship recipient, Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society intern, and Fulbright Scholar.

Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

Help keep Dover clean this fall by volunteering at the second annual Garrison City Garbage Roundup on Saturday, October 14 from 10 AM to 12 PM!

Based on public input, we've selected two spots in the city that were deemed the most in need of a little TLC. Those spots are... *Drum Roll*

If you are interested in volunteering to help clean up either site please sign up here.

Signing up helps us to split labor between the two sites and gives us a better idea of what we need for supplies. It's a huge help to the organizers so please make sure you choose a site!

This year volunteers will meet at their site locations. If you sign up to volunteer at the community trail then you will meet at the trailhead, located toward the back of the Dover train station parking lot. Those who volunteer to tackle the skate park will meet there. The skate park is located on River Street, right behind Henry Law Park. Parking is available on both sites.

It is highly recommended that volunteers bring gloves when they come to pick up trash, and those wishing to volunteer at the community trail are also encouraged to bring rakes and pruning shears to help tidy up the paths. Garbage bags will be provided.

In the case of rain, the Roundup will be moved to Sunday, October 15 from 9 AM to 11 AM.

Garrison City Garbage Roundup is sponsored by OWLS, a community service group affiliated with the Dover Public Library and a chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance. The group's mission is to encourage bibliophiles to use their love of reading and wide array of knowledge to become more involved in the community and world. This is done through projects and lectures that hope to inform and educate about important issues. OWLS is an action-only group, which means there are no meetings. Simply attend the activities or lectures that interest you most. Look for the OWLS logo on flyers posted at the library for programs sponsored by the group. All ages welcome. For more information visit: owlsnh.wixsite.com/volunteer

It will be a lively performace of old timey songs played with old timey instruments by two very talented performers in period costumes. Lauren aka Miss Maybell has a incredibly rich voice that makes you think of the late great Bessie Smith. Wear your dancing shoes and bring the whole family. This show will have you smiling and tapping your toes at the very least! Last year they brought CDs to sell as well. Find out more on their website! https://www.missmaybellandslimpickins.com/

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM A World Without Hermione: The Importance of Gender Equality in Education Film Showing & Discussion Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Dover Public Library   603-516-6050   libraryquestions@dover.nh.gov

Without an education, Hermione may never have met Harry Potter and helped to defeat Lord Voldemort; Matilda would never have discovered her powers; and Jane Eyre would never have escaped a miserable life. How would your favorite book change if the heroine suddenly disappeared?

If we imagine what our beloved stories would be like without the heroines, imagine what our world would look like without equal education for all genders. Education inequality affects all of us, and around the globe thousands of girls are prevented from attending school or are unable to finish due to discrimination, tradition, poverty, or violence.

On Wednesday, October 18 at 7 PM in the Trustees Room a film will be shown addressing the global girls’ education crisis, followed by a discussion about how gender inequality around the world impacts girls and women’s education.

The movie being presented is a CNN film called “We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls Around the World”. It was produced last year in celebration of International Day of the Girl and celebrates the power of girls’ education. It follows Michelle Obama, actors Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto, and CNN journalist Isha Sesay as they meet a group of girls from Liberia and Morocco who have overcome the odds to get an education. The film is 50-minutes and rated TV-PG.

This program is sponsored by OWLS, a community service group affiliated with the Dover Public Library and a member of the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). It is part of a campaign called “A World Without Hermione” jointly run by HPA and “She’s the First”.

The Harry Potter Alliance is a worldwide non-profit organization that uses the power of volunteering to turn fans into heroes, while “She’s the First” helps to fund scholarships and mentorships, as well as basic needs for girls seeking an education in developing countries.
