Join ORPP - the Oyster River Parents and Preschoolers group – for the library's monthly night-time storytime. Come wearing your pajamas!

This month we invite you to bring something special from home that you are thankful for, and share briefly why you are thankful for it. It could be a picture of a favorite person or a favorite toy; please don't bring something too fragile. We will read stories about Thanksgiving and make a craft.

This is a fun time for kids and for networking parents and all are welcome.

The Durham Public Library is fortunate to have two volunteers, Emily and Emily, who will be available on Tuesdays from 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm to assist patrons with their computer questions. Need help with E-mail? the Internet? Word processing…? No question is “wrong”.

You may sign up in advance for a one-on-one session to address your specific computer questions by calling the library at 868-6699.

Patrons are gently reminded that Emily and Emily will not be able to offer advice regarding finances, health, legal issues or other such matters that you may be researching on the Internet; please abide by the Library’s computer and Internet usage policy which can be found in full on the Library’s website at http://durhampubliclibrary.org/internetuse.html

    Noted musicians Harvey Reid and Joyce Andersen perform a free program based on the painting "The Source of Country Music" by Thomas Hart Benton. They will discuss the painting's place as an American icon as they demonstrate the instruments Benton included; the reproduction was made available by the Picturing America grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Cheryl Savageau presents Survival This Way: Contemporary Native American Poetry

The late 20th century saw a renaissance in Native American writing. Poetry was in the vanguard of this literary movement, yet it is often overlooked in Native American literary studies.

Abenaki poet and NHHC Scholar Cheryl Savageau will read from the works of Native American poets from diverse tribal traditions, providing cultural and historical context and discussing the many roles played by Native poets in cultural survival.

Ruth Moore will show you the secrets of making a beautiful evergreen swag to decorate for the holidays. Basic materials will be provided; please bring your choice of accent greens and/or any decorations (berries, etc) that you wish.

There will be a child's craft available - a felt ornament to hang on the tree which can hold a gift card.

Winter is here - are you prepared?

As we prepare for the cold and ice of winter, many Durham residents remember the hours and days we didn't have power during the ice storm. Carly Hellen from the Great Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer disaster preparedness suggestions for families as they plan ahead for winter weather.

She'll explain what to include in a "go kit" for the house, the shelter, and the car. She'll offer ideas for planning ahead for the family and the family pet.
