French Explorer Champlain and the Great Chatham Misadventure of 1606
French Explorer Champlain and the Great Chatham Misadventure of 1606. While explorer Samuel de Champlain may be most widely known as the “Father of New France” (Canada), he left the earliest detailed descriptions and sketches of Cape Cod's land forms, native peoples and flora and fauna during his exploration from Acadia to the Cape. Join National Seashore Park Historian Bill Burke for an illustrated journey back four centuries to take a closer look at his maps and travel journal. Do they correspond with the archeological record, and were they accurate and true? His remarkable maps of Nauset Marsh and Stage Harbor are stunning in their detail, but do they leave us with more questions than answers? Why did his journey end in open conflict with the Monomoyick people? This event is part of History Weekend, sponsored by Historic Chatham. Check out www.historicchatham.org to discover all the events and activities scheduled throughout Chatham June 14-17.

Sea Trials: Around the World with Duct Tape and Bailing Wire by author Wendy Hinman. Wendy is an adventurer, speaker and the award-winning author of two books, Tightwads on the Loose and Sea Trials. Sea Trials, her second book, tells the exciting story of the harrowing journey of the Wilcox family. A shipwreck might end a dream of circumnavigating the globe. Not for them. To triumph, they must rebuild their boat on a remote Pacific island. Damage sustained on the reef and a lack of resources haunt them the rest of the way around the world as they face daunting obstacles, including wild weather, pirates, gun boats, mines and thieves, plus pesky bureaucrats and cockroaches as stubborn as the family. Without a working engine and no way to communicate with the outside world, they struggle to reach home before their broken rig comes crashing down and they run out of food in a trial that tests them to their limits. Wendy Hinman's books and presentations are filled with humor and hard-won lessons that amuse and inspire. Don't miss the chance to hear her present while she is in town.
