Barn Babies -  Five Sessions (10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, and 12:00) for All Ages
Summer at the EPL would not be complete without the return of Barn Babies, a traveling petting zoo and one-of-a-kind, hands-on experience.  Barn Babies is our most popular program at the EPL.  Registration is required.  You may register for one session only.  Please note the following guidelines for this program:
• Once sessions are full, call Youth Services to be placed on the waiting list.
• Those individuals with animal allergies must be aware of the nature of this program.
• Once the door is closed for the session in progress, the door remains closed due to roaming animals.
• Please use the bathroom prior to entering the room.
• Reminder: latecomers, though registered, will not be allowed in the room once the program is underway.
• If you have registered and cannot attend, please call the library as soon as possible, so we can add someone from the waiting list.
• We are contractually bound to keep the room capacity at a predetermined number in an effort to maximize the enjoyment and safety of both the children and the animals.  Unregistered “guests” who accompany a registered participant will not be able to enter the room.
• The library will be closed during this program.  Entrance to the building will be at the side, rear door, and you may wait for your session in the adjoining meeting room.
We offer the maximum number of sessions that our budget and animals will allow.  We are truly sorry if you are unable to participate in this special event.  Check out the Barn Babies Facebook page to see where and when the next event is scheduled.

Chatham resident and Vietnam veteran David Van Wye will be here to talk about his fictional book, Saving Ben Tre.   Brief summary: Facing a team of determined Viet Cong insurgents, American infantrymen struggle to acquit themselves honorably.  Fate pushes Lieutenant Donald Van Howe into the Vietnam War and luck, or lack of it, leads him to Ben Tre, a city in the Mekong Delta. Destined to serve in combat operations as an advisor to a South Vietnamese battalion, he is a key player in a cat and mouse conflict with a team of crafty and experienced Viet Cong fighters. As he struggles to stay alive he is plagued by deep angst and conflict over the war. With the tension building, Van Howe and his partner, Sergeant First Class Bradford, face a life and death shoot out with their adversaries.  David Van Wye is a former advisor to a South Vietnamese battalion fighting in this terrain.  He conveys what it was like for young soldiers to be sent into combat in the appalling turmoil of the Nam.  He holds a Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) and a Bronze Star.

Roger Denk will give an illustrated talk on the evolution of national intelligence since World War Two. He will discuss the gathering of information, the massaging of that information to create intelligence. the role of the policymaker (the end user) in intelligence, and the problem of information overload.  The intelligence profession is unlike most others in that the answer is never clear, but the question is always in focus. As James Jesus Angleton, former CIA chef of  Counter Espionage said, describing intelligence, "There is an ever-fluid landscape where fact and illusion merge."

Roger is a thirty year veteran of the United States Intelligence Community, having served an officer in the United States Army and civilian assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency in both operational and analytic roles. He also formed and led a group of psychologists and psychiatrists in a government research organization that was charged with uncovering the motivations for espionage and the development of tools to prevent it.  Roger earned a Ph.D, at Georgetown University. He lives in Monterey California where he still consults with members of the Intelligence Community.

misc_none 7:00 PM Book and Author - Bernard Cornwell Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell will be at the Eldredge Public Library to talk about his most recent book, Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles.  This book is the definitive, illustrated history of one of the greatest battles ever fought—a riveting nonfiction chronicle published to commemorate the two-hundredth anniversary of Napoleon's last stand.

On June 18, 1815, the armies of France, Britain, and Prussia descended upon a quiet valley south of Brussels. In the previous three days, the French army had beaten the Prussians at Ligny and fought the British to a standstill at Quatre-Bras. The Allies were in retreat. The little village north of where they turned to fight the French army was called Waterloo. The blood-soaked battle to which the town gave its name would become a landmark in European history.

In his first work of nonfiction, Bernard Cornwell combines his storytelling skills with a meticulously researched history to give a riveting chronicle of every dramatic moment—from Napoleon's daring escape from Elba to the smoke and gore of the three battlefields and their aftermath. Through quotes from the letters and diaries of Emperor Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, and the ordinary officers and soldiers, Cornwell brings to life how it actually felt to fight those famous battles—as well as the moments of amazing bravery on both sides that left the outcome hanging in the balance until the bitter end.

Published to coincide with the battle's bicentennial in 2015, Waterloo is a tense and gripping story of heroism and tragedy—and of the final battle that determined the fate of nineteenth-century Europe.
