misc_none 8:00 AM  -  10:00 AM Mobile Build a Better World Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Mobile Build a Better World traveling librarian! We know that summer schedules don’t always mesh with library hours and summer parking opportunities, so if you are driving by the Chatham Elementary School on Wednesday mornings this summer, the Youth Services staff will offer a mobile Build a Better World check-in! A YS staff member will be at CES on Wednesdays from June 28th to August 30th from 8:00 to 10:00 am for summer reading registrations and check-ins only. Please note that we will not be able to conduct other library business at CES, and visiting the EPL should always be a part of your weekly summer routine… there are so many CSLP activities, events and resources just waiting for you and your family at the library! We hope this convenient stop will increase summer reading participation and underscore how important it is to avoid that “summer slide,” a tendency for students to lose reading achievement gains made over the previous school year.

misc_none 7:00 PM Author: Sally Cabot Gunning Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Sally Cabot Gunning, author of the ‘Satucket Novels’ and Benjamin Franklin’s Bastard, returns with a masterful new work of literary historical fiction. Monticello: A Daughter and her Father is a timely exploration of the relationship between Martha Jefferson Randolph, one of the most highly educated American women of her day, and her father, the third president of the United States Thomas Jefferson. It is a fictional exploration of the fledgling era of the nation, providing an insightful glimpse into the politics and family life of the Jeffersons. First daughters hold a unique and fascinating position of visibility and influence, and in Monticello, Gunning skillfully reveals the historical legacy of their rarefied status—not without tremendous pressure and responsibility. Renowned as an attractive and intelligent young woman, Martha Jefferson proved an invaluable asset to her widowed father, who relied upon her to help run the family estate at Monticello and serve as hostess and advisor when he assumed the presidency.

We had such a great time last summer, that we have invited Liz Barbour from Creative Feast back for another fabulous program.  "Feasting on 10 Minute Meals"  We all want to eat well but our busy schedules often keep us from taking the time to cook healthy meals. Understanding what ingredients to have in your refrigerator, pantry, and freezer is key to whipping up a fast, healthy, and delicious meal. Liz will teach you cooking short cuts to help you combine those ingredients. Join Liz to learn how to use your pantry and your local market to create and cook delicious, healthy meals in 10 minutes. You’ll need lots of tips and tricks to pull off these meals and Liz is excited to teach them to you. Enjoy a cooking demonstration of two recipes and samples for all to taste.  This program is limited to 35 guests.  Registration required.

Mark Schneider will be here to talk about his latest book, Gerry Studds: America's First Openly Gay Congressman, which will be release in July.  Gerry Studds fought in Congress to allow gays to serve in the military, to fund AIDS research and care, and for marriage equality. He was a champion of coastal and ocean environmental measures, and worked effectively to protect the interests of American fishermen - including those in Chatham. He was among the most vocal opponents of President Reagan's wars in Central America. Perhaps most importantly, he left a vivid unpublished memoir of his life, both public and private, as a closeted gay man. Mark Schneider is a retired Professor of US History and the author of "Joe Moakley's Journey: from South Boston to El Salvador.

Have you ever wandered through the woods and wondered who'd been there before?  New England's woods and wild places are full of stories: cannibalism in Vermont, Thoreau's cold and lonely night on Massachusetts' Mt. Greylock, an Eskimo in New Hampshire.  Based on the book Inns and Adventures by Alison O'Leary and Michael J. Tougias, Hidden Gems of New England takes audiences on virtual trips over mountains and through back roads of Vermont, New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts.  It's great inspiration for trip planning!  Find out about secluded swimming holes, old-growth forests, sites of hostage takings and cannibalism, adventure tourism, stunning vistas, our changing environment, and cozy inns.  The slide presentation is suitable for all ages.  Alison O'Leary is an award-winning travel writer and journalist and co-author with Michael Tougias on their latest collaboration So Close to Home: The True Story of an American Family's Fight for Survival During World War II.

We has so much fun with Christopher Daley at our Lizzie Borden program, that we've asked him back to present the Haunted History of New England. The presentation melds historical fact together with legend and myth to produce an interesting and fascinating new look at events that really happened and the stories of haunting that followed them. The topics addressed in the lecture will be Mercy Brown "The Vampire" of Exeter Rhode Island, the cursed Freetown State Forest in Massachusetts, The horrors of the Lizzie Borden House in Fall River Massachusetts, Nine Men's Misery in Cumberland Rhode Island, a haunted forest in the wilds of Connecticut, the ghostly happenings at Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire, and evidence of ghosts at the John Alden House in Duxbury Massachusetts. Christopher Daley is currently a history teacher in the Silver Lake Regional School System in Kingston and has been lecturing on topics of historical interest for over 25 years. He has lectured all over New England at libraries, schools, historical societies and all sorts of clubs and organizations.
