Read to Daniel the Cocker Spaniel!

Mondays, June 26, July 31, August 28, 5:30-7:30

For any age child who is reading or learning to read.

Reading to a therapy dog encourages children to read by providing a non-judgemental furry friend who won't mind if they stumble over a word.  The child learns to associate reading with being with the dog, and begins to enjoy reading.  Over time, the child's confidence and reading ability can improve because they are practicing their skills.

The Weaver Library is delighted to offer one more concert before summer officially ends, coming indoors to the Champlin Program Room for the Classics 5 Jazz Quintet

Director Al Testa, who plays the trumpet and flugelhorn, keeps the quintet on their toes with music from the Great American song book as well as classic American doo-wop, light rock, and a little country, all done stylistically with jazz improvisation. The Quintet includes Testa, of North Providence, James Seabury of East Providence on lead jazz guitar, Paul Gruttaduria of Smithfield on drums and vocals, Mike Verrichia of Scituate on electric/upright bass, and Carine Paul of Johnston on vocals.

Feeling nostalgic about summer’s end?  Enjoy a concert of music spanning the decades from the 1920s to today. The concert is free and open to all.

Living Literature presents “Ban Ignorance, Not Books”, a two person readers theatre program celebrating reading taken from the writings of Doris Kearns Goodwin and Neil Gaiman.   Co-sponsored by the ACLU of RI and the Weaver Library, “Ban Ignorance, Not Books,” celebrates Banned Books Week 2017.

Kearns Goodwin wrote:   Reading books forces you to imagine, question, ponder, reflect, connect one historical moment to another. Reading books provides a deeper understanding of political figures and events, of the world--of life itself.”

Steven Brown, Executive Director of the ACLU of RI, will open the evening's program.  Barry Press, Artistic Director of Living Literature, will lead a discussion following Living Literature’s 20-minute dramatic presentation.

Come and hear how your local library, the ACLU, Living Literature and books can help you imagine, question, ponder, reflect and connect to your community, your country and your world.

    Contact: Joyce May   401-434-2453   eplibraryjoyce@yahoo.com

Join us for a very special performance in honor of Veterans Day 2017.

The Players at the Barker Theater present "Henry  & Roy" or A Hollywood Day Player Delivers D-Day.

Charlie Sweigart records his ninety-year old father reminiscing about his participation in the Normandy Invasion of World War II. Realizing his father's anecdotes have strong similarities to passages in Shakespeare's "Henry the Fifth," he peruses Shakespeare's history plays and is surprised by parallels in stories 592 years apart.

This powerful one-man show places us in 1415, 1944, and 2001 and points to the relevancy between Shakespeare's commentary on war and a ninety-year old gunner/radioman's memories of D-Day.

Weaver Library is so pleased to offer a free concert with the Vermont-based folk duo Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson performing as Hungrytown. Lyricist Rebecca Hall's  compositions “sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (Northern Sky, UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (No Depression) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (Folk and Roots, UK).

The couple spends more than half of each year on the road, especially roads in North America, Europe, and New Zealand. Weaver Library is thrilled to bring their songs and their sound to East Providence.  Watch and listen to "November Song" and you won't miss this concert!

Massachusetts-based actor Stephen Collins will perform Butterfly by Carl A. Rossi, a one-man show about James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). The play presents Whistler at two phases of his life: as a bankrupt artist in his 40s on commission in Venice and as an established, yet lonely, legend in his 60s. The end of the play gives clear insight into how the iconic painting of Whistler's mother came about.

Collins is a classically-trained actor who has performed in unforgettable productions as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and Shakespeare.
