Although the town of Warren, Rhode Island in the 18th century was surrounded by the slave centers of Newport, Bristol and Providence, its small size has made it a footnote in much of what has been written about slavery and the slave trade.  Building on the work of historians Christy Clark-Pujara, Ruth Wallis Hendron, Jane Lancaster, Joanne Pope-Melish,and Marjory O’Toole, Patricia Mues and Sarah Weed use primary sources – including wills, inventories, town meeting records, censuses and other documents – to identify the enslaved of Warren and learn their histories.

Mues and Weed are co-chairs of the Warren Middle Passage Project and board members of the Warren Preservation Society.

"Vicki Summers brings her beloved grandmother's immigration story to life in her one-woman show “Bella.” Vicki’s portrayal is nothing short of poignant, in both her writing and performance. Her portrait is both loving and honest, skirting neither the complex nuances of Bella’s marriage nor the challenges she faced in her personal life both before and after immigrating to escape the pogroms. “Bella” leaves audiences inspired, wishing for more information about their own ancestors and feeling privileged to have “met” Bella through Vicki’s perseverance and talents in portraying her story."   Pamela Rothstein, Director of Life Long Learning at Falmouth Jewish Congregation

Meet the authors Dennis Pratt and Dr. Tom Shaker and learn about Rhode Island's great jazz history!

From Providence’s legendary Celebrity Club, the first interracial night club in New England, to the renowned Monday night Big Band jazz gigs that began with Duke Belaire and continue today with John Allmark, A Treasury of Rhode Island Jazz & Swing Musicians will delight the jazz lover in all of us, whether you’re from Rhode Island or not.

Professor Tom Shaker hosts The Soul Serenade, a soul & funk radio show on WICN in Worcester, MA. He has worked in video and film production in Los Angeles and Boston and is also a filmmaker. (Look for “Do It Man; The Story of The Celebrity Club” coming soon.)

Dennis Pratt is a graduate of the Navy School of Music, and Berklee College of Music. He found his way from Boston to Rhode Island as a high school band director and professional musician. He has performed with many of the musicians listed in this book.  Weaver Library audiences have enjoyed Dennis's performances as well!

Judith Kalaora, actress and founder of History at Play, embodies the spirit of women who risked their lives to defeat Fascism in WWII.  World War Women is a suspenseful reliving of the triumphs of some of our greatest heroines.  From organizing the Resistance, to blowing up rail tracks, rescuing downed RAF pilots and flying dangerous missions, these stories may very well be the most influential and often forgotten victories of the war.  A Q & A will follow the performance.
