Sean Gaskell features traditional songs on the Kora, a 21 string harp native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. Sean learned how to play the Kora throughout the course of multiple visits to its homeland in Gambia, West Africa. He studied extensively under the instruction of Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh, both of Brikama, Gambia and has been featured at a number of music festivals in the US, Gambia, and Senegal.

The Kora is a very melodic and seemingly peaceful instrument, but many songs tell ancient stories of war and hardship, while others praise people of high political status. While the Kora is only 300 years old, some commonly played songs can be traced back 800 years to the founding of the Mande empire.

Weaver Library is proud to offer this unique musical program to the community.

Join us for a discussion of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, by a distinguished NYU law professor and MacArthur grant recipient.  New members are always welcome.

Just Mercy is the 2017 Reading Across Rhode Island selection!  Join the entire state in reading this unforgettable true story about the redeeming potential of mercy.

Bryan Stevenson was a gifted young attorney when he founded Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system. As executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, he has won relief for dozens of condemned prisoners, argued five times before the Supreme Court, and won national acclaim for his work challenging bias against the poor and people of color.. “We are so thrilled to learn that Just Mercy has been chosen as the 2017 Reading Across Rhode Island selection. We truly believe that the more people who read this book, the better the country will become.” – Caitlin Mccaskey, Random House.

Meeting of the Minds, a new daytime discussion series, begins today.  Open to adults of all ages, Meeting of the Minds is a two-hour forum for discussion and exchange of ideas both contemporary and timeless.

The discussion format has two segments: the first hour focuses on a topic of political, social, and/or cultural interest drawn from the news of the day; the second on matters of philosophical interest which have been considered through the ages.  Philosophical questions may include inquiries such as “What is art?” and/or “Are there natural, universal human rights?” The process is intended to be one of civil, respectful engagement in a spirit of cooperative inquiry rather than disputation and argument.  There are no requirements other than an open mind and a willingness to listen to, entertain, and engage with the ideas of others.

The discussion group will meet for six bi-weekly sessions on Wednesdays from 10am – 12pm beginning today.  The moderator, Mr. Ron Massa, will choose the topics.  Mr. Massa began leading Meeting of the Minds groups two years ago and has had successful series in both Barrington and Warwick. This program is free and open to all. Call 434-2453 to register.

English teacher, author, and baseball enthusiast Greg Rubano shares the wonderful tales of baseball's early days and the exploits of Woonsocket-born and raised Napoleon Lajoie as he captured the imagination of a nation in love with baseball.  Lajoie was inducted into the Hall of Fame on June 12, 1939 along with Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Grover Alexander, and others.

Here's what the Babe said about Lajoie: "He was the greatest natural hitter of them all."

Ty Cobb saved his praise for "only the best."  So you can take your Ruth, your hot dogs and homers, but give me Napoloeon Jajoie.

Meeting of the Minds, a new daytime discussion series, continues in May.

The moderator, Mr. Ron Massa, will choose the topics.  Mr. Massa began leading Meeting of the Minds groups two years ago and has had successful series in both Barrington and Warwick. This program is free and open to all. Call 434-2453 to register.
