    Contact: Meredith Bonds-Harmon   (401) 434-2453   mbonds@eastprovidencelibrary.org

How can meditation help us unravel the mysteries of life? How can it grant us insight into why we are here and what our true purpose is? How can it promote human unity and the realization that we are one, not only with all humanity, but with everything in Creation? This program will provide us with the latest research on meditation’s affect on our brain, our being, and the cosmic connection it has to our relationship with the Universe. Referencing the most recent scientific research, Dr. Post will expand our understanding of the meditative process, its rich spiritual history, and the connective link it provides to the Cosmos. There will be an opportunity to learn and participate in an introductory meditation practice and Q&A following the presentation. Dr. Post is a chiropractic physician, a contributing author to the landmark book “Meditation as Medication for the Soul” (by best-selling author Rajinder Singh). He is an integrative medicine health care consultant, and a practitioner of meditation since 1976.

Weaver Library and East Providence's own Cape Verdean Museum invite the community to "Tarde Kultural" , an afternoon program celebrating Cape Verdean culture, history, and independence. Join us for a screening and a discussion of a documentary film on Amilcar Cabral, the leader of the Liberation Movement of Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau and the founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC). Hear Cabral's poetry and discuss his impact. Directed by Ana Lucia Ramos Lisboa, the film has English subtitles and is 52 minutes in length.

Amilcar Cabral was born in Guinea in 1924 and assassinated in Conakry in 1973.  Regarded as a true icon of African history, this documentary provides considerable background to this revolutionary giant and reveals Cabral in several dimensions; as a man, a father, politician, humanist and poet.  Skillfully produced with a wealth of rare archive footage, the film includes balanced and varied testimonies of important African personalities and a credible recreation of notable episodes of Cabral’s life.

Brown University historian Linford Fisher presents a lecture: "Atlantic Slaveries: African and Native American Slavery in New England and the Caribbean."

Perched on the edge of the English Atlantic empire, New England’s people and economy were intertwined with the wider English Caribbean world. At the center of it all were the enslaved people—Africans and Indians—who worked in thousands of English homes and farms. This presentation considers the wider world of Native and African slavery in New England and the Caribbean, specifically comparing New England with other English Caribbean Islands to understand the full scope of slavery over time.

D R E A M S: Most of us have them, but have you ever wondered what they really mean?   They are our subconscious speaking to us. Everything in our dreams means something, from a color, to a place, and more. We will be discussing the different kind of dreams we have and what they mean. We also discuss common dream scenarios as well as why keeping a dream journal is so important.  Please join us in this Introduction to Dreams Workshop and find out what your dreams are telling you.

English teacher, author, and baseball enthusiast Greg Rubano shares the wonderful tales of baseball's early days and the exploits of Woonsocket-born and raised Napoleon Lajoie as he captured the imagination of a nation in love with baseball.  Lajoie was inducted into the Hall of Fame on June 12, 1939 along with Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Grover Alexander, and others.

Here's what the Babe said about Lajoie: "He was the greatest natural hitter of them all."

Ty Cobb saved his praise for "only the best."  So you can take your Ruth, your hot dogs and homers, but give me Napoloeon Jajoie.

We end our book club year with a thoughtful crowd pleaser,  Rachel Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.  New members are always welcome.

Harold Fry has decided to walk 600 miles across England to save a friend?  Crazy?   Washington Post calls Harold's "ridiculous" journey "a bravely unpretentious and unsentimental tale and a cause for celebration."
