Children ages 5-10 may register to read to Gracie, a certified therapy dog. Gracie and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program which improves children’s reading and communication skills. Animals are ideal reading companions because they: listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers; and they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure. Each child will spend 15 minutes reading to Gracie. They may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

Registration is required. Please register by phone or in person. Registration Opens September 1, 2010.

This month's selection is The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy.

It's easier to talk about small things because the big things in life are far too complex and painful. But even small things can loom large, and everything can change, radically, in a day, a moment. These are the sort of big things first-time novelist Roy ponders in this highly original and exquisitely crafted tale set in the tiny river town of Ayemenem in Kerala, India. The story revolves around a pair of twins, brother and sister, whose mother has left her violent husband to live with her blind mother and brother, Chacko. Chacko's ex-wife and Chacko's lovely young daughter's arrival upsets the already tenuous balance in the household. The twins and their cousin barely have time to get acquainted before tragedy strikes. Booklist  5/1/1997
