misc_none 6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM The War to End All Wars: WWI in Four Lectures Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Part 1: Over There, Over My Dead Body!

Presented by Hamish Lutris.

The First World War broke out as a result of many factors- secret diplomacy, the media, advancing technology, national pride, and others. Some of these seem to have been avoidable, while others were not. But one thing was clear to the United States: it was a European affair, and should stay that way. It was only with reluctance that the United States brought its incredible might to bear on the First World War. This presentation will discuss the causes of the war and the reasons the United States at first stayed out, but was gradually and inexorably drawn into the conflict by 1917.

Hamish Lutris is an Assistant Professor of History at Capital Community College.    Registration is required.

This month's selection is This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel.

This novel offers a timely and thoughtful look at the life of a transgender child... a touching and sympathetic account that is brimming with life.” (Library Journal )

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

misc_none 11:00 AM  -  3:00 PM WWI Digitization Event Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

As we approach the centenary of the United States' entry into World War One,  Connecticut State Library looks to tell the stories of ordinary men and women who both served on the front and at home. To do this we are holding Digitization Day events around the state in partnership with museums, libraries and other community organizations. At these events Connecticut residents are invited to bring in their photos, letters and other keepsakes from WWI for digitization. The digital images and stories collected at these events will be added to the State Library’s online archive and made freely accessible for public use.

Please join us in this project to preserve the history of The Great War. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut State Library, the Monroe Historical Society, and the Monroe Senior Center.  This event is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
