misc_none 6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Author Talk: They Called Her Reckless, by Janet Barrett Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

When the U.S. Marine Fifth Regiment's Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition up the steep hills to the front lines, what they got was a real-life hero, Reckless, the courageous and indomitable warhorse who stood with her buddies for two years during the Korean War, saving many lives, raising spirits, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her.

From the moment she heard about Reckless, Janet Barrett knew she would write The Called Her Reckless -- A True Story of War, Love and One Extraordinary Horse.  Her experiences as a horsewoman gave her a aparticular appreciation of the tight bond that developed between Reckless and her fellow Marines, from which the story springs.

Come hear the author talk about the spirited horse that drew her to write this amazing tale.  Books will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the event.

This month's selection is Fever by Mary Beth Keane.

“In this compelling historical novel, the infamous Typhoid Mary is given great depth and humanity by the gifted Keane. Irish immigrant Mary Mallon is eager to better her station in life and unafraid of hard work. When she is finally made a head cook, she is hired by some of the best families in Manhattan but unwittingly leaves a trail of disease in her wake.  A fascinating,  often heartbreaking novel.” (Booklist)

This month's selection is My Sunshine Away by M.O. Walsh.

In My Sunshine Away, M.O. Walsh brilliantly   juxtaposes the enchantment of a charmed childhood with the gripping story of a violent crime, unraveling families, and consuming adolescent love. Acutely wise and deeply honest, it is an astonishing and page-turning debut about the meaning of family, the power of memory, and our ability to forgive. (Amazon.com)
