Those who attend this program will be treated to a modern day adventure. In March last year, Sam Ducharme set out on a 2,180 mile, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.

You will also see his gear, how he cooked, and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons.  Registration is required and begins on May 29th.

Author F. Mark Granato will talk about his riveting historical fiction thriller, Of Winds and Rage.  He will explain the extensive research that went into building the backdrop of his story, the monster hurricane that struck the coast of New England in 1938.  Granato made a close study of the storm's behavior as well as the U.S. Weather Bureau's role in the disaster.

Registration is required and begins on June 13th.

Of Winds and Rage Summary:

September, 1938: An angry hurricane is racing across the Atlantic as the fledgling US Weather Bureau scrambles to track the monster storm. Inexplicably, the forecasters lose sight of the typhoon, which unfathomably grows more powerful and takes direct aim at an unsuspecting New England. Even as the deadly storm approaches, on the wealthy Rhode Island summer retreat of Napatree Point, there is another kind of evil lurking. With a trail of blood marking his every eerie advance, a man of equally terrifying proportions is being hunted by lawmen dedicated to stopping the crazed murderer’s killing spree since his escape days earlier from the State Prison in Wethersfield, Connecticut. No one is safe from the threat of man and nature as the insane killer and an epic hurricane descend together on the unsuspecting beaches of the Rhode Island coastline, bent on death and destruction.

Which side are you on?  That's the question that everyone in Connecticut had to answer in 1775, as the thirteen colonies began a rebellion against British rule.  For soldiers and civilians alike, loyalty could mean loss of fortune, of friends, and even of life.  This presentation reveals stories - some well known, some obscure - of Nutmeggers who risked and sacrificed to support their chosen side during this "tumultuous jarring time of civil war."

Presented by Natalie Belanger, Visitor Services Associate at the Connecticut Historical Society and History Teacher at Manchester Community College, Asnuntuck Community College, and Goodwin College. Registration is required and begins on June 27th.
