 A Three Part Series Co-Sponsored by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce & Greater Bridgeport SCORE

Part One: Focused Guerrilla Tactics Are a New Successful Business Selling Strategy

A bare-bones marketing budget doesn’t have to mean the death or delay of your marketing plan. Guerrilla marketing strategies & tactics can be deployed by small business owners at a low cost (or at no cost at all).  Making sure that your tactics drive your overall business and marketing strategy and ROI!

Marketing tactics must have three characteristics to be considered “guerrilla marketing.”  They must be:

  • Innovative,
  • Unconventional,
  • Low-cost.

Guerrilla marketing tactics are deployed with the goal of getting maximum exposure for a brand or its products or services for a minimal investment of time, money and other resources.

Business owners with limited budgets can work with the idea that it doesn’t take money to capture the imagination of their target audiences and convert that interest into new sales, so long as you have a razor sharp understanding of these six tactics essential to guerrilla marketing success:

  1. Understanding the way target audience members think (and behave)
  2. Being creative when developing marketing tactics
  3. Measuring success not by numbers of new customers and profits instead of sales
  4. Developing strategic partnerships with other organizations to achieve shared goals
  5. Leveraging free media
  6. Making fast decisions and using agility to outflank larger competitors

Your presenter: Dina Elliott-Maison is a Business Growth Strategist, a Certified Management Consultant, and Vice Chairman responsible for Business Education and a Certified Mentor for SCORE.  As founder and Chief Cook and Bottle Washer of ECG, LLC she has started and run multiple businesses and non-profits and has successfully taken them from incubation to operation to viable going concerns.

A Three Part Series Co-Sponsored by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce & Greater Bridgeport SCORE

Part Two: Taking Advantage of Goliath & The Benefits of Being David: What the Big Guys Don’t Do Well – BUT YOU CAN!!!!!

Entrepreneurs perpetually play the role of David against their Goliath corporate competitors. And, just like their biblical counterpart, small businesses can defeat their large competitors by outmaneuvering, out-imagining, and outperforming them. Entrepreneurs are perfectly positioned to operate as insurgents against their entrenched corporate competitors because they’re more willing to challenge the conventions about how commercial battles are supposed to be fought.

The business lesson: When underdogs choose not to play by Goliath’s rules, they win.

In this workshop we will learn how the entrepreneurial Davids can succeed against their Goliath adversaries.

This month's selection is Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf.

“A fitting close to a storied career, a beautiful rumination on aging, accommodation, and our need to connect. . . . As a meditation on life and forthcoming death, Haruf couldn’t have done any better. He has given us a powerful, pared-down story of two characters who refuse to go gentle into that good night.” (The Philadelphia Enquirer)

A Three Part Series Co-Sponsored by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce & Greater Bridgeport SCORE

Part Three: How to Compete with 'Big Box' Retailers presented by Cliff Ennico

One of the most horrifying times for a “brick and mortar” retailer is the day a “big box” retailer such as Wal-Mart®, Home Depot® or Lowe’s® moves into town.  After going through the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance – what should you do with your business to stay afloat?  You can’t stick your head in the sand and ignore the possibility that the greater economies of scale and lower prices these companies offer may well put you out of business.  Sadly, customer loyalty is becoming a thing of the past: offering your customers “better service” may not only be a waste of time but may actually give your “big box” retailer a competitive advantage.

But you shouldn’t panic either.  By thinking clearly, refocusing your business the right way, leveraging the weaknesses of “big box” retailers generally, and by complementing and outflanking them rather than challenging them directly, you can survive and coexist with even the biggest of “big box” retailers.  Numerous small businesses in the greater Bridgeport, Connecticut, area have done so in the past, and their “real world” stories are not only inspiring but offer practical tips on how to survive, and even grow, when a “big box” looms on the horizon.

      In this fast-paced, entertaining presentation, you will learn:

  • the first rule of survival: don’t panic;
  • how “big box” retailers work – their strengths and weaknesses;
  • the myth of “better service” as a competitive advantage;
  • convenience and location as a competitive advantage;
  • your product/service mix as a competitive advantage;
  • your market segment as a competitive advantage;
  • your Internet marketing strategy as a competitive advantage; and
  • when all else fails, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”.

Your Presenter: Attorney, author, syndicated columnist, speaker, television personality and humorist, Cliff Ennico is considered one of North America's foremost small business experts, and has helped more than 15,000 small businesses get off the ground over the past 36 years.  Formerly host of "Money Hunt", a PBS reality television series that was the “SharkTank” of the 1990s, Cliff is the author of fifteen books on entrepreneurship and small business success, including The eBay Seller’s Tax and Legal Answer Book, Small Business Survival Guide, and Money Hunt: 27 New Ways to Create and Build a Breakaway Business.  He speaks nationwide to corporations, business groups and professional organizations on legal and tax issues affecting entrepreneurs and their technology, Web-based and e-commerce businesses.

There are fascinating looks into other cultures and how they are studied, and the sacrifices and dangers that go along with it. This is a powerful story, at once gritty, sensuous, and captivating.” (Booklist)
