misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion: The Golem and the Jinni Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop. The Golem and the Jinni is their magical, unforgettable story; unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures – until the night a terrifying incident drives them back into their separate worlds. But a powerful threat will soon bring Chava and Ahmad together again, challenging their existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice. (Goodreads.com)

And then Nick is diagnosed with polio-a life-threatening disease in the 1930s. Everyone is devastated, especially Nick's father, who copes by closing off from his son. When Nick finally leaves the hospital he wants nothing more than to get back in the game, but he seems to be the only one who thinks it's possible. But after he begins working for Mr. Churchill, the owner of a minor league team, Nick meets Satchel Paige, arguably the best player in baseball. Satchel faces obstacles of his own-his skin color prevents him from joining the major leagues-and he encourages Nick to overcome the odds and step out of the dugout."  (Summary from library catalog.)  Copies of the book will be available at the Children's Circulation Desk.

*Registration is required and is limited to 16 participants.  Registration for this event will begin at midnight one month before the program date.  If you would like to register more than one child, please fill out a separate registration for each child.*

A Monroe Reads Together Event

Women's Work in WWII book coverAs part of Monroe Reads Together, we are pleased to host author John Cilio who will discuss his latest book, “Women’s Work in WWII.” The lecture’s message highlights the importance of making personal commitments to change, imagining success and achieving it. A message that is as relevant today as it was decades ago. Because of the millions of WWII women who worked in thousands of roles and were confident that they were equal to fill the roles of men they replaced, the workplace would never be the same. John shares the chain of circumstances that propelled the nation to realize that women can be an overtly sustaining force within our society.

"This book gave me a much better understanding of what a pivotal role women actually had during such a trying time in our nation. I would recommend this book to everyone." Anna Montgomery, a student at the University of Alabama

John Cilio believes that often the consequences of a historical incident were hidden from those that experienced it yet looking back one can the sense the full impact of their moments in time. This is John’s sixth historical book. Reservations required and begin September 29th.

How does birth order influence your child’s self-image and imprint on his/her social interactions? How is your own parenting style, including expression of conflict, influenced by your own birth order?   What are the strengths and challenges of each family position?  How can birth order be used to encourage family members—including you!-- to try new behaviors?  Alison Birnbaum, LCSW, will answer these questions and more in her lecture.  Birnbaum has worked with children, adults and families in her psychotherapy practice in New Canaan and New York City for 30 years.  She also served for a decade as a parenting expert and a member of the Behavior Change Expert Panel for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy in its Anti-Drug Media Campaign.

This month's selection is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born, the third child of a wealthy English banker and his wife. Sadly, she dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in any number of ways. Clearly history (and Kate Atkinson) have plans for her: In Ursula rests nothing less than the fate of civilization. (Goodreads.com)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary

This month's selection is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.

Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Riveting and rich with lyricism, Burial Rites evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others? (Goodreads.com)

This month's selection is Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende.

Isabel Allende’s latest novel, set in the present day (a new departure for the author), tells the story of a 19-year-old American girl who finds refuge on a remote island off the coast of Chile after falling into a life of drugs, crime, and prostitution. There, in the company of a torture survivor, a lame dog, and other unforgettable characters, Maya Vidal writes her story, which includes pursuit by a gang of assassins, the police, the FBI, and Interpol. In the process, she unveils a terrible family secret, comes to understand the meaning of love and loyalty, and initiates the greatest adventure of her life: the journey into her own soul.     Contact: Adult Services   203-452-2850 X 6   reference@ewml.org

How do colleges hand out merit awards? Are there “test optional” colleges? What stats should I learn about colleges before I apply? What are “recruit to deny” practices? In this session, parents and students will learn that each college has its own unique culture, stats, and admissions processes. The key to choosing the right college for you comes from “decoding” their application process and learning the inside “secrets” to success. Copies of “The College Success Plan” will be available for purchase. A second workshop will be available on Saturday, January 31, 1:00 to 2:15 p.m.

Registration required for both sessions and begins December 16th. Register below for today's lecture. Register here for the Saturday, January 31, 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. lecture. Refreshments provided courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

Annette Bosley-Boyce, founder and author of The College Success Plan™, is a passionate educator, life-long student, mother, and wife. Currently the Director of Career Services at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven CT, she has over 13 years' experience teaching and mentoring college students, she’s learned that many need more direction when it comes to planning for their future, especially before accruing oppressive student loan debt. This growing trend among college students is the reason for writing her book and sharing her “practical” college planning strategy to parents and their college bound teens.

How do colleges hand out merit awards? Are there “test optional” colleges? What stats should I learn about colleges before I apply? What are “recruit to deny” practices? In this session, you’ll soon learn that each college has its own unique culture, stats, and admissions processes. The key to choosing the right college for you comes from “decoding” their application process and learning the inside “secrets” to success. Copies of “The College Success Plan” will be available for purchase. A second workshop will be available on Tuesday, January 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Registration required for both sessions and begins December 16th. Register below for today's lecture. Register here for the Tuesday, January 20th, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. lecture.

This growing trend among college students is the reason for writing her book and sharing her “practical” college planning strategy to parents and their college bound teens.

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- The Art Forger Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is The Art Forger by Barbara A. Shapiro.

On March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art today worth over $500 million were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It remains the largest unsolved art heist in history, and Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that there’s more to this crime than meets the eye. Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting—a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum—in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire’s studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late nineteenth century may be the only evidence that can now save her life (Goodreads.com).

This month's selection is The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Two brothers bound by tragedy; a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past; a country torn by revolution. A powerful new novel--set in both India and America--that explores the price of idealism and a love that can last long past death. Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate, The Lowland expands the range of one of our most dazzling storytellers, seamlessly interweaving the historical and the personal across generations and geographies. This masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return, is a tour de force and an instant classic. (Goodreads.com)

This month's selection is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

Hetty "Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. This month's selection is Five Days at Memorial: Five Days in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink.

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.

Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. (Goodreads.com)

This month's selection is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time. (Goodreads.com)
