misc_none 1:00 PM  -  2:15 PM Secrets of the College Application Process presented by Annette Bosley-Boyce Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Adult Services   203-452-2850 X 6   reference@ewml.org

How do colleges hand out merit awards? Are there “test optional” colleges? What stats should I learn about colleges before I apply? What are “recruit to deny” practices? In this session, you’ll soon learn that each college has its own unique culture, stats, and admissions processes. The key to choosing the right college for you comes from “decoding” their application process and learning the inside “secrets” to success. Copies of “The College Success Plan” will be available for purchase. A second workshop will be available on Tuesday, January 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Annette Bosley-Boyce, founder and author of The College Success Plan™, is a passionate educator, life-long student, mother, and wife. Currently the Director of Career Services at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven CT, she has over 13 years' experience teaching and mentoring college students, she’s learned that many need more direction when it comes to planning for their future, especially before accruing oppressive student loan debt. This growing trend among college students is the reason for writing her book and sharing her “practical” college planning strategy to parents and their college bound teens.

Registration is required.

holiday_heart1 Blind Date with a Book Starts Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Adult/Teen Services Librarian   203.452.2850 x6   reference@ewml.org

Have you been waiting for a chance at a new relationship? Looking to heat up your Valentine's Day? Blind Date with a Book returns to EWML!

Stop by the library between February 1 and February 28 to participate in our Blind Date with a Book program! It’s easy, fast and fun. Blind Date with a Book matches you with an unknown gift wrapped book which you choose to check out at the library, not knowing the title, author or genre. Then you take your book on a blind date by choosing to meet with, read it and give it a chance to make an impression.

Sure you might be disappointed; but then again ... you may end up having a great read with something you wouldn't have chosen for yourself. With each book is a ‘Rate Your Date' slip. Simply say whatever you want about your date; you won't hurt our, or its, feelings.

Even if your date turns out to be a 'dud' all is not lost. With each slip you return by Monday, March 16th at 8:00 p.m., you can enter our raffle for a $25 gift certificate to the Monroe Diner.

So stop by the library between February 1 and February 28 and meet your blind date!

Rebuild Your Net Worth: Is Starting a Business the Way to Go?

This program is geared toward individuals aged 50 and older who are interested in increasing their financial opportunities after the recent economic recession and are considering starting a business.

Are you:

* Looking for ways to monetize your significant work experience?

* Looking to supplement your retirement?

* Looking to fund your retirement?

This workshop will address and discuss answers to the following...

* Do you really want to start a business? OR... Are you looking to increase your cash flow?

* Are you cut out to be a Business Owner?

* If yes, do you know what type of business you want to be in?

* What type of customer are you looking to attract?

This workshop is presented by Daniel de Percin, who enjoyed a successful 4 decade long marketing, sales and sales management career in the Broadcasting Industry in New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. From the elevator speech used to close his very first sale to those he currently uses as the creator and founder of RebuildYourNetWorth.com, he has first-hand entrepreneurial experience of not only what works but why it works. Danny also volunteers for the Bridgeport, CT, chapter of SCORE as a certified mentor and its Director of Marketing and Public Information.

    Contact: Michelle   203-452-2850 x 4   mturbak@ewml.org

Children ages 5-10 may register to read to Dani, a certified therapy dog, between 5 and 6:30 p.m.in the children's story room.

Dani and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program, which improves children's reading and communication skills.

Each child will spend 15 minutes reading to Dani. They may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers; and they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, according to the program.

*Registration is required. Register in person or by phone at 203-452-2850 x 4.*

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- The Art Forger Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is The Art Forger by Barbara A. Shapiro.

On March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art today worth over $500 million were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It remains the largest unsolved art heist in history, and Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that there’s more to this crime than meets the eye. Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting—a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum—in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire’s studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late nineteenth century may be the only evidence that can now save her life (Goodreads.com).

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

    Contact: Adult Services   203-452-2850 X6   reference@ewml.org

At the heart of small business marketing are the campaigns that drive action – collections of marketing activities that help a small business or organization to achieve its goals and objectives. Newsletters and Announcements have become a core component of those campaign choices. Email is more important than ever – to the communication efforts of businesses and nonprofits everywhere; and to the customer, donor, client or supporter of those organizations. April Woodcock, Managing Partner & Chief Buzz Officer at the digital marketing company Touching Clients, will reveal some simple but effective best practices and considerations for the small business or nonprofit seeking to make their email newsletters more effective.

Attendees of this presentation will learn:

  • The different types of newsletters
  • What to write about in your newsletter or announcement and how to consider using images
  • Subject line best practices, and when to send your newsletter
  • The importance of understanding how connected email and social media are…they have to be done together.

Why is it that the belongings we no longer use, but just can't let go of, end up in their very own retirement community right inside our homes?  They've done what they can for us, what if we set them free and let them fly off to Florida, or a friend's, Goodwill, or the dump? Larry Russick, Professional Organizer, returns to reveal the secrets to organize your Attic, Basement, and Garage, talk to about what we keep there versus what we should, and to how to go about organizing them.

The program begins with an overview of how to organize anything, covering the fear of letting go (of things), biting off manageable chunks, how to sort, and what to do with what we keep. The audience will also practice sorting a handful of items from wallets and purses. Then the particulars of organizing each area will be addressed. The talk is fun, lively and interactive and leaves time for questions.

NEW CHILDREN'S REGISTERED PROGRAM POLICY - PLEASE READ

Although library programs are free of charge for those who attend, they do come with a cost to the library in terms of presenters’ fees, material expenses, and staff time.  Please notify the library as soon as you know that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they have registered, so that another child may take his place.  We often have long waiting lists for our programs and we would like for as many children as possible to be able to attend.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start of any program which your child will be attending.  Our presenters will begin their programs promptly and late arrivals may find that their registered slot has been given to a child on the waiting list.

Please be advised that repeated failure to notify the library in a timely manner that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they are registered will result in a loss of program registration privileges for that child.

IF YOU REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR A PROGRAM AND YOUR CHILD FAILS TO SHOW UP MORE THAN ONCE, AND YOU DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL 24 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME TO LET US KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ATTENDING, THEN YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS.

This month's selection is The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Two brothers bound by tragedy; a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past; a country torn by revolution. A powerful new novel--set in both India and America--that explores the price of idealism and a love that can last long past death. Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate, The Lowland expands the range of one of our most dazzling storytellers, seamlessly interweaving the historical and the personal across generations and geographies. This masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return, is a tour de force and an instant classic. (Goodreads.com)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- The Invention of Wings Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

Hetty "Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. (Goodreads.com)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary.

Register in person or by phone at 203-452-2850 x 4.*

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- Five Days at Memorial Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is Five Days at Memorial: Five Days in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink.

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.

Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. (Goodreads.com)

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- Me Before You Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time. (Goodreads.com)
