misc_none 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Surviving the 'Big Box' Store: Strategies for Monroe Businesses Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Adult/Teen Services Librarian   203.452.2852   reference@ewml.org

A Three Part Series Co-Sponsored by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce & Greater Bridgeport SCORE

Part Three: How to Compete with 'Big Box' Retailers presented by Cliff Ennico

One of the most horrifying times for a “brick and mortar” retailer is the day a “big box” retailer such as Wal-Mart®, Home Depot® or Lowe’s® moves into town.  After going through the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance – what should you do with your business to stay afloat?  You can’t stick your head in the sand and ignore the possibility that the greater economies of scale and lower prices these companies offer may well put you out of business.  Sadly, customer loyalty is becoming a thing of the past: offering your customers “better service” may not only be a waste of time but may actually give your “big box” retailer a competitive advantage.

But you shouldn’t panic either.  By thinking clearly, refocusing your business the right way, leveraging the weaknesses of “big box” retailers generally, and by complementing and outflanking them rather than challenging them directly, you can survive and coexist with even the biggest of “big box” retailers.  Numerous small businesses in the greater Bridgeport, Connecticut, area have done so in the past, and their “real world” stories are not only inspiring but offer practical tips on how to survive, and even grow, when a “big box” looms on the horizon.

      In this fast-paced, entertaining presentation, you will learn:

  • the first rule of survival: don’t panic;
  • how “big box” retailers work – their strengths and weaknesses;
  • the myth of “better service” as a competitive advantage;
  • convenience and location as a competitive advantage;
  • your product/service mix as a competitive advantage;
  • your market segment as a competitive advantage;
  • your Internet marketing strategy as a competitive advantage; and
  • when all else fails, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”.

Your Presenter: Attorney, author, syndicated columnist, speaker, television personality and humorist, Cliff Ennico is considered one of North America's foremost small business experts, and has helped more than 15,000 small businesses get off the ground over the past 36 years.  Formerly host of "Money Hunt", a PBS reality television series that was the “SharkTank” of the 1990s, Cliff is the author of fifteen books on entrepreneurship and small business success, including The eBay Seller’s Tax and Legal Answer Book, Small Business Survival Guide, and Money Hunt: 27 New Ways to Create and Build a Breakaway Business.  He speaks nationwide to corporations, business groups and professional organizations on legal and tax issues affecting entrepreneurs and their technology, Web-based and e-commerce businesses.

Children in grades K - 3 may register to read to Dani, a certified therapy dog, for a 15-minute session!  This program provides an opportunity for beginning and/or struggling readers to practice reading aloud to improve their reading skills.  Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers.

Dani and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program, which improves children's reading and communication skills.

Each child may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

*Registration is required for a specific timeslot.  If the timeslot you would like is unavailable, please call the library to put your name on a waitlist*

Presented by Hamish Lutris, Associate Professor of History at Capital Community College.

McCarthyism was part of a phenomenon that affected thousands. The Red Scare, as it was called, brought to light some of America's deepest fears of foreign agents and domestic traitors. But McCarthyism also targeted America's morality. The Lavender Scare investigated gays in the government, firing tens of thousands of American government workers as threats to national security because of their sexual orientation. This talk will focus on McCarthy and McCarthyism in the 1950s, how America's political and social foundation was challenged by a new sense of morality, and how the nation reacted to that challenge.  Snow date: Tuesday, February 28th.

With the technology explosion that has taken place in the last few years, the world has become a different place.  Yet while it may feel like the last two decades have been full of technological changes, the next two are going to be much stranger!  Artificial intellegence and machine learning, robotics, the Internet of Things and more are going to combine to produce a world that may be nearly unrecognizable to us. Join Jason Griffey for a Skype discussion of technology, social changes, and more.  Griffey will give you an idea of some of the fascinating and exciting things that will become a part of daily life in the future.

Jason Griffey is a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

“The summer of 1961 finds thirteen-year-old Frank Drum living in small-town New Bremen, Minn. The small-town milieu is rendered in picturesque detail, accurate down to period-appropriate TV programs, for what becomes a resonant tale of fury, guilt, and redemption.” (Publishers Weekly)

This month's selection is The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman.

“This rhapsodic blend of keenly observed historical elements and vibrantly fabulistic invention generates an entrancing saga of sacrifice, forbidden loves, betrayals, and family tragedies endured in a world fractured by religion, class, and race and redeemed by art and by love.” (Booklist)

This month's selection is Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.

“A tribute to a bygone era conjures up mesmerizing images of 1930s New York. Two worlds collide on New Year's Eve 1937, and three lives will never be the same. For Katey Kontent and Eve Ross, two working gals out on the town, a chance encounter with patrician banker Tinker Grey sets into motion a series of events causing far-reaching consequences.”(Booklist)

Have you always wanted to write a book, story, poem or memoir? Everyone has a story to tell. Join us on the third Tuesday each month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for an opportunity to finally get those ideas out of your head and onto paper (or laptop.) We welcome all types of writers who aspire to publish and anyone else who would like to spend an hour in a safe, nurturing environment creating and sharing their work. Seniors are encouraged to document family traditions and personal anecdotes to pass on to loved ones.  No registration necessary.
