This is a MoneySmart Week Event

End of life decisions are an important consideration for adults of ALL AGES.  There's never a better time than now to make the plans that will spare relatives and friends the burden of making difficult, often costly, decisions at a time of sorrow and crisis.  With openness, straightforward information and even a little humor, Patricia Carr of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Connecticut will explain essential aspects of planning ahead including preparation of wills and living wills; conveying wishes to family and/or close friends, and controlling funeral costs.

Registration is required and begins on March 30th.

Please Note: If you attended (or were registered to attend) one of last month's art classes, you have to wait until at least 48 hours after you receive the email alert before you can register for one of this month's classes.  There will be a follow-up email when registrtaion opens up for everyone.  This will give more people an opportunity to take advantage of these popular classes.  If you DID NOT attend last month's class, you are free to register as soon as the first email comes out.  Please call the Reference Desk if you have any questions.

Join Kathy Vincent of ArtSmart! Studio for an evening of American Impressionism!  Working with both acrylic paint and oil pastel, participants will create a bright, beautiful imaginary landscape inspired by the colorful work of American painter Wolf Kahn. Emphasis will be placed on color relationships and color field composition.

Registration is required but not yet open. Limited to 16 people per class.

Children in grades K - 3 may register to read to Dani, a certified therapy dog, for a 15-minute session!  This program provides an opportunity for beginning and/or struggling readers to practice reading aloud to improve their reading skills.  Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers.

Dani and her handler have been trained in the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) program, which improves children's reading and communication skills.

Each child may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

*Registration is required for a specific timeslot.  If the timeslot you would like is unavailable, please call the library to put your name on a waitlist*

Grades 3 - 6.  Have you ever wanted to learn to code?  This class will teach you how to program in a Java-like language.  You'll learn how to control a maze-gobbling mouse and then work at your own rate on various programming activities that will teach you how to create your own maze!  This class is taught by Deb Shea, a teacher at St. Jude School.

Professional Horticulturist, Cynthia Giancaspro and Master Gardener, Barbara Thomas will teach you how to control weeds and understand the importance of soil pH and how to check it.  They will explain about overseeding to crowd out weeds and discuss some alternatives to a natural lawn.  Do you have areas where you could use a ground cover to save time and expense?  They'll give you some options to the consider.

Join artist David Merrill, who painted the library's historical mural, for the Monroe Historical Society's Annual Gala event.  Mr. Merrill will be working on a new painting in-house and will take time out to answer questions about his work and  to talk to attendees informally.  Original work by the artist will be on display and prints will be available for sale.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Monroe Historical Society. 

This event is co-sponsored by the Monroe Historical Society and the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library.  It is free and open to the public.  No registration required.

Everyone has either seen or has a neighbor who's seen a black bear in Connecticut.  Felicia Ortner, a Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast, provides education about bears and helps dispel misunderstandings.  Ortner, who has been involved in bear research in Connecticut for 25 years, will describe the resurgence of this remarkable survivor that once was extinct in the state, and is now rapidly increasing, numbering in the hundreds.

Join us on the third Tuesday each month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for an opportunity to finally get those ideas out of your head and onto paper (or laptop.) We welcome all types of writers who aspire to publish and anyone else who would like to spend an hour in a safe, nurturing environment creating and sharing their work. Seniors are encouraged to document family traditions and personal anecdotes to pass on to loved ones.  No registration necessary.

Come to this FREE practice SAT test for current high school juniors and sophomores (rising juniors).  Taking a full length practice test will give you an opportunity to see how you'll do on the actual test without putting a permanent score on your record.  After the test, you will receive an extensive score-report allowing you to see where your strengths and weaknesses are, PLUS a personalized consultation with a Princeton Review Advisor to go over your scores and answer your questions!

This is a four hour exam, so be sure to arrive on time and bring #2 pencils, a calculator, and a water bottle if you need one.  The library opens at 10:00 a.m., but If you come a few minutes early, you will be able to enter on the lower level and go into the meeting room.  

A light snack will be provided.  Registration is required and begins on April 21st.  Limited to 60 people.  There must be at least 20 registrations two weeks ahead of the program to run this.

Grades 3 - 6.  What's smaller than a golf ball and ready to learn?  It's an Ozobot-Bit!  Using Blockly-based code, Maker Monday participants will work in pairs to learn to program these miniature robots.

Let's face it... first impressions do make a difference! The "selfie" from your phone doesn't quite cut it anymore when trying to put your best foot forward. Get your professional portrait shot at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library's mini-sessions from 10-2 on Saturday, May 28th. A Corporate Image will be capturing portrait shots that can be used for professional purposes, as well for dating or social media profiles. After the shoot, you will be provided a link to three high resolution images that can be easily downloaded to your own computer. Portraits will be taken with a studio background or outside (weather-depending). Each 15 minute session has been extremely discounted to only $50, from the usual price of $150. To reserve your preferred time slot, please email rolivera@acorporateimage.com. Double sessions can be booked upon request.
