A Monroe Reads Together Event

Women's Work in WWII book coverAs part of Monroe Reads Together, we are pleased to host author John Cilio who will discuss his latest book, “Women’s Work in WWII.” The lecture’s message highlights the importance of making personal commitments to change, imagining success and achieving it. A message that is as relevant today as it was decades ago. Because of the millions of WWII women who worked in thousands of roles and were confident that they were equal to fill the roles of men they replaced, the workplace would never be the same. John shares the chain of circumstances that propelled the nation to realize that women can be an overtly sustaining force within our society.

"This book gave me a much better understanding of what a pivotal role women actually had during such a trying time in our nation. I would recommend this book to everyone." Anna Montgomery, a student at the University of Alabama

John Cilio believes that often the consequences of a historical incident were hidden from those that experienced it yet looking back one can the sense the full impact of their moments in time. This is John’s sixth historical book. Reservations required and begin September 29th.

How does birth order influence your child’s self-image and imprint on his/her social interactions? How is your own parenting style, including expression of conflict, influenced by your own birth order?   What are the strengths and challenges of each family position?  How can birth order be used to encourage family members—including you!-- to try new behaviors?  Alison Birnbaum, LCSW, will answer these questions and more in her lecture.  Birnbaum has worked with children, adults and families in her psychotherapy practice in New Canaan and New York City for 30 years.  She also served for a decade as a parenting expert and a member of the Behavior Change Expert Panel for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy in its Anti-Drug Media Campaign.

Our book selection for November is, The Courage of Sarah Noble, by Alice Dalgliesh.  "In 1707, young Sarah Noble and her father traveled through the wilderness to build a new home for their family. 'Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble,' her mother had said, but Sarah found that it was not always easy to feel brave inside. The dark woods were full of animals and Indians, too, and Sarah was only eight!  The true story of Sarah's journey is inspiring. And as she cares for her father and befriends her Indian neighbors, she learns that to be afraid and to be brave is the greatest courage of all." misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- Life After Life Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born, the third child of a wealthy English banker and his wife. Sadly, she dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in any number of ways. Clearly history (and Kate Atkinson) have plans for her: In Ursula rests nothing less than the fate of civilization. (Goodreads.com)

Come share a lively discussion with us. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the front desk one month prior to the discussion date. No registration necessary

Each child will spend 15 minutes reading to Gracie. They may bring their own book or choose one at the library before their session.

Animals are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively; do not judge, laugh or criticize; allow children to proceed at their own pace; are less intimidating than peers; and they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, according to the program.

NEW CHILDREN'S REGISTERED PROGRAM POLICY - PLEASE READ

Although library programs are free of charge for those who attend, they do come with a cost to the library in terms of presenters’ fees, material expenses, and staff time.  Please notify the library as soon as you know that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they have registered, so that another child may take his place.  We often have long waiting lists for our programs and we would like for as many children as possible to be able to attend.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start of any program which your child will be attending.  Our presenters will begin their programs promptly and late arrivals may find that their registered slot has been given to a child on the waiting list.

Please be advised that repeated failure to notify the library in a timely manner that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they are registered will result in a loss of program registration privileges for that child.

IF YOU REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR A PROGRAM AND YOUR CHILD FAILS TO SHOW UP MORE THAN ONCE, AND YOU DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL 24 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME TO LET US KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ATTENDING, THEN YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS.

This event has been rescheduled from October 27th.

Reservations required.

This month's selection is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.

Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Riveting and rich with lyricism, Burial Rites evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others? (Goodreads.com)

This month's selection is Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende.

Isabel Allende’s latest novel, set in the present day (a new departure for the author), tells the story of a 19-year-old American girl who finds refuge on a remote island off the coast of Chile after falling into a life of drugs, crime, and prostitution. There, in the company of a torture survivor, a lame dog, and other unforgettable characters, Maya Vidal writes her story, which includes pursuit by a gang of assassins, the police, the FBI, and Interpol. In the process, she unveils a terrible family secret, comes to understand the meaning of love and loyalty, and initiates the greatest adventure of her life: the journey into her own soul. Why is it that the belongings we no longer use, but just can't let go of, end up in their very own retirement community right inside our homes?  They've done what they can for us, what if we set them free and let them fly off to Florida, or a friend's, Goodwill, or the dump? Larry Russick, Professional Organizer, returns to reveal the secrets to organize your Attic, Basement, and Garage, talk to about what we keep there versus what we should, and to how to go about organizing them.

The program begins with an overview of how to organize anything, covering the fear of letting go (of things), biting off manageable chunks, how to sort, and what to do with what we keep. The audience will also practice sorting a handful of items from wallets and purses. Then the particulars of organizing each area will be addressed. The talk is fun, lively and interactive and leaves time for questions.

Reservations required and begin December 15th. Snow Date January 26.

misc_none 6:45 PM  -  7:45 PM Book Discussion- The Art Forger Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This month's selection is The Art Forger by Barbara A. Shapiro.

On March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art today worth over $500 million were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It remains the largest unsolved art heist in history, and Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that there’s more to this crime than meets the eye. Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting—a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum—in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire’s studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late nineteenth century may be the only evidence that can now save her life (Goodreads.com).

This month's selection is The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Two brothers bound by tragedy; a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past; a country torn by revolution. A powerful new novel--set in both India and America--that explores the price of idealism and a love that can last long past death. Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate, The Lowland expands the range of one of our most dazzling storytellers, seamlessly interweaving the historical and the personal across generations and geographies. This masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return, is a tour de force and an instant classic. (Goodreads.com)

This month's selection is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

Hetty "Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. This month's selection is Five Days at Memorial: Five Days in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink.

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.

Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. (Goodreads.com)

She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour.
