Grades 3 - 6.  Have you ever wanted to travel back in time or fly into the future?  Then this book club is for you!  Each month we'll be reading a book that is set in another time period - either historical fiction set in the past or science fiction that gives a glimpse of what life could be like in the future.  We'll also make a craft or do an activity associated with that time period.  This month you will decorate your own baseball cap!  Refreshments will be served.

Our book selection for October is, King of the Mound: My Summer with Satchel Paige, by Wes Tooke.  "Baseball legend Satchel Paige changes a boy's life in this coming-of-age tale from the author of Lucky . Nick was going to be a star baseball player, no doubt about it. People for miles around talked about the twelve-year-old boy with the golden arm. And then Nick is diagnosed with polio-a life-threatening disease in the 1930s. Everyone is devastated, especially Nick's father, who copes by closing off from his son. When Nick finally leaves the hospital he wants nothing more than to get back in the game, but he seems to be the only one who thinks it's possible. But after he begins working for Mr. Churchill, the owner of a minor league team, Nick meets Satchel Paige, arguably the best player in baseball. Satchel faces obstacles of his own-his skin color prevents him from joining the major leagues-and he encourages Nick to overcome the odds and step out of the dugout."  (Summary from library catalog.)  Copies of the book will be available at the Children's Circulation Desk.

*Registration is required and is limited to 12 participants.  Registration for this event will begin at midnight one month before the program date.  If you would like to register more than one child, please fill out a separate registration for each child.*

NEW CHILDREN'S REGISTERED PROGRAM POLICY - PLEASE READ

Although library programs are free of charge for those who attend, they do come with a cost to the library in terms of presenters’ fees, material expenses, and staff time.  Please notify the library as soon as you know that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they have registered, so that another child may take his place.  We often have long waiting lists for our programs and we would like for as many children as possible to be able to attend.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start of any program which your child will be attending.  Our presenters will begin their programs promptly and late arrivals may find that their registered slot has been given to a child on the waiting list.

Please be advised that repeated failure to notify the library in a timely manner that your child will be unable to attend a program for which they are registered will result in a loss of program registration privileges for that child.

IF YOU REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR A PROGRAM AND YOUR CHILD FAILS TO SHOW UP MORE THAN ONCE, AND YOU DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL 24 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME TO LET US KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ATTENDING, THEN YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS.

Refreshments will be served.

Our book selection for November is, The Courage of Sarah Noble, by Alice Dalgliesh.  "In 1707, young Sarah Noble and her father traveled through the wilderness to build a new home for their family. 'Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble,' her mother had said, but Sarah found that it was not always easy to feel brave inside. The dark woods were full of animals and Indians, too, and Sarah was only eight!  The true story of Sarah's journey is inspiring. And as she cares for her father and befriends her Indian neighbors, she learns that to be afraid and to be brave is the greatest courage of all." (Amazon.com)  Copies of the book will be available at the Children's Circulation Desk.
