lib_bookflipping 10:00 AM Blind Date with a Book Starts! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Adult Services   203-452-2850 X 6   reference@ewml.org
Tired of your same old relationships? Need something new, exciting and stimulating? Looking to heat up your Valentine's Day? How about having a blind date with a book at Edith Wheeler Memorial Library?

Stop by the library between February 1 and February 28 to participate in our “Blind Date with a Book” program! It’s easy, fast and fun. Blind Date with a Book matches you with an unknown gift wrapped book which you choose to check out at the library, not knowing the title, author or genre. Then you take your book on a blind date by choosing to meet with, read it and give it a chance to make an impression.

Sure you might be disappointed; but then again ... you may end up having a great read with something you wouldn't have chosen for yourself. With each book is a ‘Rate Your Date' slip. Simply say whatever you want about your date; you won't hurt our, or its, feelings.

Even if your date turns out to be a 'dud' all is not lost. With each slip you return by Monday, March 18, 2013 at 8:00 p.m., you can enter our raffle for a $25 gift certificate to Roberto’s Restaurant, Monroe, CT.

This month's selection is State of Wonder, by Ann Patchett.

“As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she will be forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle.  Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness.  Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest's jeweled canopy.”—synopsis

*Please note: there has been an error and today's exam will be an SAT/ACT combo exam.  High school sophomores and juniors, come to this combination SAT/ACT practice test run by Kaplan Test Prep  to see how you do.   You will get a phone call with your results within two weeks to let you know what areas you need to improve through study.

Colleges now accept your highest standardized test score on either the ACT or the SAT.  Some students are more adept at the ACT so it is worth taking both exams to see which is a better fit for you.  The test is 4 hours long with a brief break in the middle.  Bring #2 pencils and a calculator and be on time!  Registration is required.  The library opens at noon so be sure to come to the back of the building and enter on the lower level if you arrive a few minutes early.

    Contact: Adult Services   203-452-2850 X 6   reference@ewml.org
Invasive Plant Species are tangible examples of how we dramatically alter our environment without even realizing it. Native plants are enjoying a new popularity - and rightly so. While many people think of natives as being just Part of the Background, they are perfectly suited to Starring Roles on the Botanical Stage. Rugged without Belligerence, Delicate without Wimpiness, and Beautiful without being Prima Donnas, all while being Responsible Citizens of the larger Landscape, Natives are the ultimate “Right-Plant-Right-Place”.

Donna Katsuranis returns to discuss some of the most common Invasive species, and some wonderful Native alternatives. Registration required and begins January 28 . Refreshments provided courtesy of the Friends of the Library.
