Yoga workshop with Sally Morgan, PT
Phoenix Rising Certified Yoga Instructor

Sponsored by the Western Mass. Recovery Learning Community and the Freedom Center of Northampton

Free (donations at www.freedom-center.org )

Sally Morgan brings her background as a Physical Therapist and certified CranioSacral Therapist/Instructor to her yoga classes. Her classes offer people the opportunity to explore and heal their minds and bodies as one. Certified through Phoenix Rising, well known for their Yoga Therapy programs, Sally’s approach emphasizes “receiving” yoga, rather than “doing” yoga. Sally’s practice in Vinyassa Yoga, with flowing postures moving smoothly into one another, also strongly influences her classes. She studied Yin Yoga with Lynn Kingston, where postures are maintained for several minutes, allowing for deep fascial changes in the body, and this tradition is evident in Sally’s classes. Sally’s intentions in teaching yoga are to facilitate physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation, and to provide a sense of peace and grounding during classes.

Phoenix Rising yoga experiences consist of eight classes with themes (Befriending the Body, Awareness, Acceptance, Choice, Discernment, Truth, Truth in Action, Flow) that encourage self reflection. Periodically, this series will be offered instead of a more traditional yoga class. While it is best to attend them all in order, drop in’s are still welcome.

    Contact: Lisa   587-1011
Saturday February 20 and 27 10:30-12:30 in the Watson Room at the Forbes Library

“A dream that has not been interpreted is like a letter that has not been opened” (Talmud)

“Before the dawn of written history dreams have served as a primary vehicle for creativity and increasing self-awareness. Religions of the world all have ancient traditions of dream work woven into their sacred texts and oral traditions. “ (Jeremy Taylor, Jungian Dream Analyst)

Dreams can be understood on many levels and serve as symbolic and archetypal messages from our unconscious. Once understood, these dream “messages” provide insight and inspiration for healing and transformation. In this group participants will learn practical skills to help them remember and work with their dreams. Group members will be able to practice these skills using their own dreams or those of the leader. This group will also include a brief introduction to Jungian dream work: archetypal imagery, collective unconscious, and premonitions.

Group members are encouraged to bring pen and paper and any dream or fragment of a dream they have had in recent memory.

Biography

She has worked as an expressive arts therapist both nationally and internationally with an emphasis on cross-cultural spirituality. You have been told your entire life, “Eat less, exercise more to lose weight.” Ever wonder why it hasn’t worked? Reducing the number of calories or eating less actually suppresses the thyroid, making your body conserve energy and thus hold onto weight. Dieting also increases cortisol levels, creating sugar and processed food cravings. It is not how much you eat but WHAT YOU EAT that really matters! Learn to stop dieting once and for all and learn to lose weight in a way that is easy and permanent while promoting good long term health.

Craig Fear, NTP is a certified Nutritional Therapist and owner of Pioneer Valley Nutritional Therapy. The foundation of his practice is to educate people about the importance of choosing foods that are raised locally and sustainably and to help them transition to a whole foods diet. Craig believes that food, as Nature intended, is a form of medicine that can heal, prevent, nurture and support good health. He works with clients on an individual basis and specializes in weight loss, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders and detoxification.     Contact: Lisa   413-587-1011
In Northampton, poetry is happening... among all age groups. As children's art is unbounded and unexpected, so is their poetry. Outstanding teachers encourage this creativity in their students with special units that include attending the Smith Poetry Center readings, writing poems in Emily Dickinson's bedroom, or bringing poets in to talk to their students and work with them. Forbes is proud to present the students of three of these teachers; Tom Weiner and Laura Ramsey (6th grade at the Campus School) and Diana Ajjan (7th grade at JFK Middle School.)

This is the third year we have invited middle school students to our series. There can be no better way to celebrate National Poetry Month than by listening to these talented and brave young poets.

This reading is part of the Seventh Annual Forbes Poetry Series. The series takes place on the first Wednesday of the month from October to May. Readings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the Friends of the Forbes Library.

Uncertain Politics and Unlikely Romance during a Turbulent Time, 1964 - 1975

Author Durham Caldwell has invented the Massachusetts town of Riverbridge. But he’s populated it with familiar characters, and the events they grapple with are right out of yesterday’s headlines: the Goldwater movement, the upheaval caused by urban renewal, protests over the Vietnam War that bring fisticuffs between opposing sides, a sit-down led by a college president, friction between police and the black community, civil rights vigils, and the decade-long fight to end de facto segregation in inner-city schools.

Caldwell knows his Massachusetts politics and politicians. He’s covered them for broadcast and print outlets for more than half a century. His book’s central figure, TV newsman Buzz Buckley, has to cope not only with the competition but also with the moral myopia of a station owner aligned with the city’s big shots and the distractions of a rollicking, Rabelaisian romance with an old high school sweetheart and a growing fondness for his politically ambitious city councilor daughter-in-law.

Among the fictionalized versions of things that really happened: a news director called on the carpet during the height of the civil rights movement because the percentage of “black news” stories he was covering was out of proportion to the number of African-Americans in his TV station’s coverage area; “we can't consider adding minorities to our news department because it might offend our advertisers”; “they’re calling us ‘the nigger station’ because we’re broadcasting so many stories about civil rights and the black community.”

"Stress results from many factors including the environment, emotions and lifestyle habits. Reducing stress provides freedom to recognize what feels better and to move in that direction."
Jane Diamond, Quantum Biofeedback Specialist

All of them are easy to read, while being suffused with an astonishing verbal music and a compacted thoughtfulness that invite sustained reflection."

To quote from the dust jacket, "Its Four Branches are tales of heroism and heartbreak, of love and disloyalty, that for all their magic and mystery, remain rooted in the emotional realities and moral complexities of everyday life. They are also rooted in the very soil of Wales, in a landscape relatively unchanged since these tales were first told in the early Middle Ages." John Bollard is a member of the Welsh Society of Western New England. The lecture is accompanied by a slide show.

Some of the poets that have been discussed recently include Marge Piercy, Emily Dickinson, Mary Oliver, Naomi Shihab Nye, Maxine Kumin, Philip Schulz, Philip Levine, Sharon Olds, C.K. Williams and James Tate. Evenings are dedicated to specific poets of the facilitator's choosing or to topics in poetics.

Many people in the group will be seeing the work for the first time at the group. No previous experience or familiarity with the work is necessary. All are welcome. Bring a friend, make a night of it!

Cancellations in the event of illness or dangerous driving conditions will be made via email and postings at the library.
