This gentle, healing yoga class is appropriate for all who wish to add the healing qualities of yoga to their lives. We move the body through the classical poses very slowly, gently and conscientiously. Rests are taken between poses as the body moves towards inner introspection on a physical and meditative level. This class is highly beneficial for those who are ready to return to physical activity after an illness or injury, or for those who have not moved much in a long time. Everyone will leave feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Your teacher, Vickie Healy is a registered Dharma Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Certification. She is happy to support you in your introduction to Dharma Yoga. Vickie is a Registered Nurse with 33 years of nursing experience, helping people make positive changes in their lives by assisting them in removing health barriers that are keeping them from realizing healthier lives. Nurturing mind, body and Spirit is the foundation of her nursing practice. Vickie believes that practicing yoga is a powerful way to increase health and longevity. She believes that yoga is available to all who are willing to embark in the practice, regardless of previous injury, illness or health conditions. For more information about Vickie, please see New Karma Yoga.

Hypothyroidism and Its Naturopathic Treatment

Hypothyroidism is extremely common these days, and the majority of it is autoimmune, so-called Hashimoto's disease. This means that, like all autoimmune processes, autoimmune hypothyroidism begins in the gastrointestinal tract, the result of an imbalance in the population of beneficial gut bacteria and consequent increased intestinal permeability. Often there is nothing wrong with the thyroid at all. The hormonal treatments many doctors prescribe can certainly help one to feel better in the short term and are welcome relief in this sense, but they do nothing to address the underlying process of autoimmunity. To treat the thyroid at its deepest level, we need to treat and support the gut, and to do that, we need to understand what's really going on there. Join naturopathic physician Dr. Chris Decker for an enlightening discussion of the thyroid and how to support its function at the deepest, most curative level. Free and open to the public.
Dr. Chris Decker is a licensed Naturopathic Physician, Homeopath, and Certified GAPS Practitioner with offices in Brattleboro, VT, and Florence, MA. She has practiced naturopathic medicine since 2000 and homeopathy since 1988, and she is a former lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Decker is a member of the online physician group Primal Docs, and she is the chapter leader of the Northampton, MA, Weston A. Price Foundation.

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning (except in July and August) from 9:30-12:30 in the Watson Room, join Forbes Writer In Residence Susan Stinson for some companionable writing time. The Writing Room is ongoing throughout the year.
How the Writing Room Works: Each session opens at 9:30 sharp with brief hellos, followed by the pleasure of getting work done in the company of others. Some writers work in other parts of the library, then join us at 11:45 to check in about how the work went and make announcements. At (roughly) 12, anyone who wishes to read for the group does briefly, without critique or spoken response. We're done by 12:30. There are writing prompts on the table for those who like to use them. There are four hour parking meters in the back of the lot. Consider bringing a sweater. Writers are welcome to come for all or part of the session.

Chivas Sandage & Write Like a River
Saturday, June 29, 2013
Forbes Library Community Room
3:00-4:30 p.m.
Chivas Sandage and Write Like a River, her local women’s writing workshop, will give a free, public reading at Forbes Library on Saturday, June 29th at 3 p.m.
“Born” at Forbes Library, this multi-genre group will read new work and refreshments will be available. Writers include Alison H. Bowen, Barbara Cortez-Greig, Alice Knox Eaton, Amaele ”Maya” Liebermann, C. Tara Rahkola, Joyce Rosenfeld, Chivas Sandage & Susan Alexis Wozniak.
Sandage describes the group as “lively, warm and passionate” and tells how they got their start: “In 2006, I offered a series of workshops at Northampton’s Forbes Library. A group formed and for the next two years we met in various living rooms. In September of 2010, I was able to start the group up again and I’m happy to say that our workshops feel more powerful and inspiring than ever. I feel sincerely astonished by the writing these women share each time we meet.”
Chivas Sandage’s first book of poems, Hidden Drive (Antrim House 2012), is a finalist for the 2012 ForeWord Book of the Year Awards in Poetry. She is a contributing writer for The New Civil Rights Movement blog and her poems and essays are forthcoming or recently appeared in Drunken Boat, Equality Texas, Evergreen Review, The Hartford Courant, Knockout Magazine, Naugatuck River Review, Paradise Found: A Walking Tour of Northampton, Massachusetts through Poetry and Art(Levellers Press, ’13), and Morning Song: Poems for New Parents (St. Martin’s Press, ’11), among others. She has taught composition and world literature at Westfield State University, earned an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a BA from Bennington College. She’s at work on a second collection of poems and blogs at csandage.com.
