school_graduate 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM DC - Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camps in the Adirondacks: Their History & Lore     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public works program that operated from 1933 to 1942, as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. It targeted young men and veterans in relief families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression, providing unskilled manual labor related to environmental conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands. Volunteers planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America, constructed more than 800 parks nationwide, updated forest fire fighting methods, and built a network of service buildings and public roadways. In nine years, 2.5 million young men participated in restoring morale and public appreciation of the outdoors.

These young men worked in 21 Connecticut CCC camps while some traveled to Western states to do conservation projects. These interviews and hundreds of marvelous photos of camp life capture the vitality of the young men who worked so hard to improve our forests, which had been ravaged by fires, lumbering, and storms. We must not forget their labors in the woodlands and state parks that continue to be enjoyed by millions today.

Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Their History, Memories and Legacy by Martin Podskoch of East Hampton, Conn. is the definitive book that records the CCC experience for the men who passed through its cleansing days of hard work, Army discipline, and camaraderie to help support their families during the Great Depression. Join Marty for a presentation based on his book.

Women have been involved in military conflicts from the beginning of time; some as warriors, some as spies and others who made the munitions or simply called for peace.  Connecticut women are among the finest and bravest who have stood for their cause – sometimes defying gender norms, and often without the recognition they deserved.  CWHF Inductees prove that women are just as tough as men and will inspire others to shatter gender barriers. Learn about a teenager who helped save Danbury during the Revolutionary War, how Harriet Beecher Stowe sowed the seeds of conflict leading to the Civil War, and how Margaret Bourke-White’s photography brought civilians face to face with the war front for the first time.

Presented by the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The multi-talented five-some The KC Sisters put a fresh new spin on the term “Sister Act.” Harkening back to the heyday of family groups, with a rootsy, Americana sound that incorporates folk, country, gospel, R&B and jazz.

What sets The KC Sisters apart from any other group of musical siblings or indie bands is their musical diversity, transcendent ease with three and four part harmonies, and the fact that each sister is a multi-talented vocalist and musician skilled in a variety of instruments. Deanna (18) and Noelle (16), who wrote “Daddy Came Home” with their father, the group’s producer and arranger Chris Casey, play violin, piano, drums, guitar and bass. Their younger sisters are 14 year old Tasha (violin, drums, piano, bass) and 12 year olds Elise (violin, cello, bass, piano, drums) and Kathleen (violin, bass, drums, piano). Their shows include multi-harmonized vocals, instrumentals, country fiddling, a capella hymns, pop, jazz, standards and country music.

All ages welcome! Please register.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this spring!

French Army Captain Antares Bonassieu (Jeremie Renier) and his squad are assigned to monitor the remote Wakhan valley in Afghanistan on the border of Pakistan. Occupied by local shepherds and Taliban sympathizers, this so-called "calm sector" quickly turns volatile when men from both sides of the conflict start to disappear one by one. Desperate to rescue their missing comrades, the soldiers soon find themselves trapped in an existential nightmare, unable to explain who or what is behind this chilling mystery. Not rated.104 minutes.
