Journey back in time with folk songs of the early '60s, including the work of icons such as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, Donovan,  Richard and Mimi Fariña, and others. Ms. Doctorow will also perform some of her original compositions and discuss the songwriting process, as well as what it was like to grow up with her father, the late world-renowned author E.L. Doctorow. Get a unique perspective on a significant period in our country's musical history.

Caroline Doctorow is a chart-topping Americana folk singer songwriter, with a stirring voice that recalls Judy Collins and Sandy Denny. Her style echos the great '60s folk songwriters. In addition to eleven solo albums, she also released the first retrospective of the work of Richard and Mimi Fariña called Another Country which received critical acclaim. Ms. Doctorow tours with her folk band The Steamrollers.

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this winter!

A blockbuster in its native Korea, where it would go on to become the country's most successful independent film of all time, this documentary presents an unforgettable story of true love that transcends both generations and cultures.

"100-year old lovebirds," Byong-Man Jo and Gye-Yeul Kang, have been inseparable companions for 76 years. Observing this fragil couple for 15 months, director Mo-Young Jin acts as a fly-on-the-wall, capturing the tender moments of their twilight days as the two face the inevitable reality that their time together will soon be approaching an end. Not rated. 86 minutes.

Master percussionist, educator, and the author of Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (May 2016), Craig Harris leads this exciting multimedia and participatory celebration of the music of Indigenous North America. Defying stereotypes, this program combines archival video and audio, informative discussion, and collective music-making in a soundscape spanning from  the "heartbeat" of powwow drums and the  “warble” of wooden flutes to the electrifying sounds of Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance music.

Craig Harris has documented an eclectic range of music for newspapers, magazines, and websites, for more than four decades. The author of The New Folk Music (White Cliffs Media) and The Band, Pioneers of Americana Music (Rowman & Littlefield), he was a major contributor to Music Hound Folk Music: Essential Album Guide and Music Hound World Music: Essential Album Guide.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public works program that operated from 1933 to 1942, as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. It targeted young men and veterans in relief families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression, providing unskilled manual labor related to environmental conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands. Volunteers planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America, constructed more than 800 parks nationwide, updated forest fire fighting methods, and built a network of service buildings and public roadways. In nine years, 2.5 million young men participated in restoring morale and public appreciation of the outdoors.

These young men worked in 21 Connecticut CCC camps while some traveled to Western states to do conservation projects. These interviews and hundreds of marvelous photos of camp life capture the vitality of the young men who worked so hard to improve our forests, which had been ravaged by fires, lumbering, and storms. We must not forget their labors in the woodlands and state parks that continue to be enjoyed by millions today.

Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Their History, Memories and Legacy by Martin Podskoch of East Hampton, Conn. is the definitive book that records the CCC experience for the men who passed through its cleansing days of hard work, Army discipline, and camaraderie to help support their families during the Great Depression. Join Marty for a presentation based on his book.
