Executive Director Jay Johnston is thrilled to announce the return of the “Branding Book,” the Farmington Room's 17th-century accounting of Farmington’s livestock transactions. In this document was recorded who was trading domestic animals to whom, as well as the identifying marks and locations of those brands on each specific animal. We are excited to unveil this document, recorded on vellum, that gives a peek into Farmington’s economic and social history.

The entire community is invited to see this stunning conservation outcome on October 3rd at 11:00 a.m., in the Farmington Room at the Main Library. This project was funded through private giving and the Friends of the Farmington Libraries.

Self-love and self-worth is about looking at yourself in the mirror and saying I love you. It’s about giving yourself permission to come first and being non-apologetic about that. It’s about loving your body – right now, regardless of what it looks like and how it functions. During this program, we’ll dive into the ways we don’t love ourselves and learn a new way of thinking. You’ll leave feeling empowered, energized and excited.

Lynn Healy has studied spirituality, energy and space healing, meditation and the power of the thought for the past four years. She's a student of the metaphysical text A Course in Miracles and a graduate of Gabrielle Bernstein's Spirit Junkie Masterclass. Learn more about Lynn at lynnphealy.com

Ask anybody to name two English rock bands from the 1960s and the response will likely be The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. But despite often being portrayed as rivals in the media, the two groups were actually quite friendly towards each other, both socially and musically. This 60-minute presentation will compare and contrast the two through musical examples and interviews with the band members to illustrate the relationship between The Beatles & The Rolling Stones.

America's only professional Beatles scholar, Aaron Krerowicz won a research grant through the University of Hartford in November 2011 to study the band and has the authored three books on the subject.

Please register.

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this fall!

1916. While war rages in the Ottomon Empire, Hussein raises his younger brother, Theeb ("Wolf"), in a traditional Bedouin community that is isolated by the vast, unforgiving desert. The brothers' quiet existence is suddenly interrupted when a British Army officer arrives looking for a guide to lead him through dangerous terrain riddled with mercenaries, revolutionaries and outcast raiders. Not rated. 100 minutes.

Winner of Best Director at the 2014 Venice Film Festvial, "Naji Aby Nowar's impressive feature" is a "quietly gripping adventure tale" that heralds "the inauguration of a new film genre: the Bedouin western." 2016 Academy Award Nominee, Best Foreign Language Film.

A discussion on Kate Northrop’s book, Money, A Love Story: Untangle Your Financial Woes and Create the Life You Really Want. Do you feel like there’s never enough when it comes to money? Do you feel anxious when you think or talk about money?  Do you avoid paying your bills or looking at your bank statements? If you answered yes to these questions, you are not alone. Millions of people struggle with their relationship to money. Join Lynn Healy as she guides through a non-traditional approach of looking at your relationship to money. This program is not about 401Ks or tax breaks, but about how your attitudes and beliefs around money impact your bank account.

Lynn Healy has studied spirituality, energy and space healing, meditation and the power of the thought for the past four years. She's a student of the metaphysical text A Course in Miracles and a graduate of Gabrielle Bernstein's Spirit Junkie Masterclass. Learn more about Lynn at lynnphealy.com.

Dvorak was the happiest and least neurotic of the Romantics. He was barely literate and hardly a deep thinker (locomotives were his chief passion outside of music). The cheery Czech was greatly influenced by his native folk culture which inspired him to write a plethora of tuneful compositions. Jeffrey Engel will detail Dvorak's life and play excerpts of his music.

Jeffrey Engel is a music historian who teaches at Northwestern Connecticut Community College. In 2010 he was selected by Litchfield Magazine as one of the fifty most influential people in Litchfield County.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Florence Post was like any other child growing up in Lithuania in the 1940s, until 1941 when Nazi Germany invaded. She will share her story of living under Nazi Occupation, and her arrival in America at age 12.

Please register.

Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938. German authorities looked on as SA paramilitary and civilians carried out these attacks and covered the streets with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, over 1,000 synagogues were burned, and over 7,000 Jewish businesses were destroyed or damaged. This annual event at the Farmington Libraries commemorates the human spirit’s ability to overcome such persecution.

In the course of the long eighteenth century—the Age of Caricature, and of The Rise of the Novel—the British reading public perfected the pastime of savoring characters.  In a flourishing print culture, buying and selling likenesses of people and types became a business—and arguably an art.  Real and imaginary characters—actual and fictional people—were put on paper by writers and graphic artists, and performed onstage and off.  The exigencies of narrative, performance, and indeed of community conspired to inform views of other people—friend and foe, fat and thin—as tellingly, characters.  “For what do we live,” Jane Austen’s Mr. Bennet would ask rhetorically in 1813, “but to make sport for our neighbours and laugh at them in our turn?”

This exhibit will feature images by William Hogarth, James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, Thomas Patch, Edward Francis Burney, Francis Grose, and G.M. Woodward, excerpts from novels by Jane Austen, Frances Burney, Henry Fielding, and Laurence Sterne, and examples of graphic collections published by Matthew and Mary Darly and Thomas Tegg that marketed caricature as entertainment

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this fall!

Legendary directing team Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (The Night of the Shooting Stars, Caesar Must Die) offer an evocative new take on the classic work The Decameron. Ten young men and women escape plague stricken Florence for a countryside estate where they regale each other with bawdy tales of love, destiny and desire. This story about storytelling is a beautiful paean to Italian history, art and the imagination. Not rated. 120 minutes.

As a business owner, the primary value of QuickBooks, or any accounting software, is to provide you with the financial and management data that will help you effectively manage your business. Additionally, it should provide you with consistently accurate data for the preparation of any tax or compliance forms required by government or industry agencies. Whether you are using an outside accountant, an internal bookkeeper, or doing the bookkeeping yourself, you need to have a fundamental understanding of how the accounting software generates the numbers that make up your financial and performance reports and understand how the daily bookkeeping processes categorize the data that is used in the report.
