Now in their thirties, they notice that their friends seem to lose all their good qualities when they have children - child rearing and the spark of Eros don't seem to co-exist. So, they decide to have a child together, share in child rearing, but pursue their own romantic lives. Things go well until he meets Mary Jane and she meets Kurt. Both seem like perfect mates. What could go wrong? (2011, R, 107 minutes)

To hear the speech of the real America, to smell the grass and the trees, to see the colors and the light—these were John Steinbeck's goals as he set out, at the age of fifty-eight, to rediscover the country he had been writing about for so many years.

With Charley, his French poodle, Steinbeck drives the interstates and the country roads, dines with truckers, encounters bears at Yellowstone and old friends in San Francisco. Along the way he reflects on the American character, racial hostility, the particular form of American loneliness he finds almost everywhere, and  the unexpected kindness of strangers.

Love, Loss and What I Wore

Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron, based on the book by Ilene Beckerman

From the award winning writers of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and Silkwood comes the hit play, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, that just completed a hugely successful 2 ½-year New York run. The off-Broadway performances featured a stellar, rotating cast that included Tyne Daly, Rosie O’Donnell, Samantha Bee, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Lynch, Rhea Perlman, Rita Wilson, Brooke Shields, and scores more. A funny, compelling and touching tale. Women’s stories of love and loss woven together to form a masterwork. A play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black.

Please register in advance for this program by calling the library at 860-673-6791, using the online registration form, or visiting the Information Services Desk.

For a woman – (France)  In her mid-thirties, Anne still knows practically nothing of her family’s past. After her mother’s death, Anne discovers old photos and letters that convince her to take a closer look at her parents’ life after the concentration camps of World War II. Her search reveals the existence of a mysterious uncle everyone seems intent on forgetting entirely. As she closes in on a discovery she didn’t expect, her father grows ever more ill, and may take the family secret to his grave. In a journey that stretches from post-war France and to the 1980’s, Anne’s destiny intertwines with her father’s past until they form a single, unforgettable story.  (2013, 110 minutes)

The Irish Domestic In 1800s Connecticut: Shades Of "Downton Abbey."  Faced with starvation in their native land, a multitude of brave Irish women faced the perils of an Atlantic crossing during the 1800s in the hope of becoming domestic servants in the United States. Thousands landed, lived, and worked in Connecticut, resulting in drama occasionally reminiscent of scenes from "Downton Abbey."

Neil Hogan, editor of the Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society's newsletter, "The Shanachie," will share research and stories collected as part of the Society's ongoing oral history project.

"Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway’s most enduring works. Since Hemingway’s personal papers were released in 1979, scholars have examined the changes made to the text before publication. Now, this special restored edition presents the original manuscript as the author prepared it to be published.

Featuring a personal Foreword by Patrick Hemingway, Ernest’s sole surviving son, and an Introduction by grandson of the author, Seán Hemingway, editor of this edition..."(Amazon.com, 2014)

Back by popular demand! The Survivors Swing Band is a 7-piece ensemble made up of recent retirees and senior citizens, calling themselves the "Survivors" in acknowledgement of some of the original band members who had passed away, as well as in recognition of those beloved old melodies that remained favorites despite the passage of the decades. Come celebrate the nostalgic 1940s with hits from Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and other favorites. More information about the Survivors Swing Band can be found on their web site: http://www.survivorssb.com/

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.

Please register in advance for this program by calling the library at 860-673-6791, using the online registration form, or visiting the Information Services Desk.
