    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Learn about Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and Healthcare Representatives. You may think that drafting an estate plan is straightforward, but in reality, if you do it wrong, you are jeopardizing everything you have worked for. What is the difference between a Will and a Trust? Why won't a Will be sufficient by itself? Do you need a power of attorney and what should it say? What about health care directives? Should I add my children's names to my bank accounts? We will share real-life stories showing you the dangers of common estate planning mistakes such as using incorrect phrases in your documents or omitting important ones. We’ll also spend some time talking about the probate process.

Please register.

Join ForwardCT and Political and Proud at the Farmington Library for a timely forum on talking to teens about sexual harassment and assault. Teens and adults are welcome to join us as we define sexual assault and harassment, discuss issues and concerns on school campuses, places of employment, and beyond, understand how not to be a bystander, and learn ways to protect ourselves and our children. ForwardCT co-founder Eleni Kavros DeGraw and Political and Proud founder (and high school junior) Anna Szekeres will pose questions to our three panelists:

The Farmington Libraries and ForwardCT Community Issues Series brings together experts to shed light on issues facing Connecticut and its citizens and to discuss how to get involved and take action. ForwardCT is a grassroots organization focused on connecting, informing, and inspiring progressive local action.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Connecticut has the second highest cost of long-term care in the nation. So, unless you are planning to leave the state, you need to protect yourself and your retirement assets from long-term care costs. Should you give your home to your children? How can you get assistance paying for a nursing home and home care? How can single individuals and married couples qualify for Medicaid benefits while protecting their children’s inheritances? What is the 5-year look back? How can you spend down? Is long-term care insurance a good idea? If you know the rules and plan ahead, you can still protect your hard-earned assets.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Escape the summer heat by joining adventurer Sarah Bouckoms on a trip to the Antarctic, all from the comfort of your local library! Sarah is a world traveler with a love for the harsh but incredible Antarctic weather. She will share her experiences through photography and lecture.

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest and driest continent on Earth. This area is doubled during the winter, when the sea ice extends almost 1000 km from the coast. The ice on the continent can tell us how the climate has evolved over several hundred thousand years, and Antarctica is therefore an important reference area for international environmental research. [Source - Norwegian Polar Institute]

Sarah Bouckoms was born and raised in New England but has traveled extensively throughout the world visiting all 7 continents before turning 30. Her father was born in New Zealand and she has strong connections to her kiwi roots. Her sense of adventure, curiosity and scientific career has taken her to Antarctica, Alaska and the Arctic as she defies the stereotype of a lab scientist.  Her research gear includes skis, tents, ice axes and dehydrated meals.  Her expedition work includes working with the Juneau Icefield Research Project conducting one of the longest running Mass Balance Pit surveys. She has also conducted Geological Surveys, Seal Census, and a multitude of Citizen Science projects.

Her teaching experience began at the Bridgeport Discovery Museum and Planetarium, and Hebrew High School of New England followed by a five year position at the prestigious Miss Porters School for Girls. Her expertise in teaching High School Physics, Conceptual Physics, Environmental Lab Science, Robotics, Astronomy, and Climate Change makes her an ideal Exploring Woman educator and role model. Sarah is also a certified EMT, WEMT and wilderness first aid instructor. She is a council member for Polar Educators International, a member of the Explorers Club and New Zealand Antarctic Society. She has her masters in astroparticle physics from the University of Canterbury working with the IceCube Neutrino Detector and her Post Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies. She has been invited to present her curriculum on Climate Change at POLAR2018 in Davos https://www.polar2018.org/.

Are you a little less Y and a little more A, but can’t get enough of YA books? It’s ok, no really, it’s okay. This book group is for you! Whether you first found yourself drawn to teen books when the Hunger Games hit the big-screen or if you have been a lifelong fan, this group is for you. Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. We meet monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7PM at the Farmington Main Library. A limited number of copies of each book on the list will be available for loan at the library, or bring your own! Refreshments will be provided.

JUNE'S BOOK: Mosquitoland by David Arnold

After the sudden collapse of her family, Mim Malone is dragged from her home in northern Ohio to the “wastelands” of Mississippi, where she lives in a medicated milieu with her dad and new stepmom. Before the dust has a chance to settle, she learns her mother is sick back in Cleveland.

So she ditches her new life and hops aboard a northbound Greyhound bus to her real home and her real mother, meeting a quirky cast of fellow travelers along the way. But when her thousand-mile journey takes a few turns she could never see coming, Mim must confront her own demons, redefining her notions of love, loyalty, and what it means to be sane.

Great films, picked just for you!

Spend your afternoon enjoying free screenings of classic musicals on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Barney Library! This month's film is Bye Bye Birdie (1963).

When the draft selects rock star Conrad Birdie, his fans are devastated, but none more than struggling songwriter Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke), whose song Birdie was just about to record. Albert's longtime girlfriend, Rosie (Janet Leigh), pushes Albert to write a new tune that Birdie will perform on television to a fan selected in a contest. The scheme works, with young Ohio teenager Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) declared the winner, but no one has counted on the jealous wrath of her boyfriend.

JUNE'S BOOK: Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

Running into a long-ago friend sets memories from the 1970s in motion for August, transporting her to a time and a place where friendship was everything—until it wasn’t. For August and her girls, sharing confidences as they ambled through neighborhood streets, Brooklyn was a place where they believed that they were beautiful, talented, brilliant—a part of a future that belonged to them.

But beneath the hopeful veneer, there was another Brooklyn, a dangerous place where grown men reached for innocent girls in dark hallways, where ghosts haunted the night, where mothers disappeared. A world where madness was just a sunset away and fathers found hope in religion.

JULY'S BOOK: Outrun the Moon by Stacey Lee

San Francisco, 1906: Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong is determined to break from the poverty in Chinatown, and an education at St. Clare’s School for Girls is her best hope. Although St. Clare’s is off-limits to all but the wealthiest white girls, Mercy gains admittance through a mix of cunning and a little bribery, only to discover that getting in was the easiest part. Not to be undone by a bunch of spoiled heiresses, Mercy stands strong—until disaster strikes.

On April 18, a historic earthquake rocks San Francisco, destroying Mercy’s home and school. With martial law in effect, she is forced to wait with her classmates for their families in a temporary park encampment. Though fires might rage, and the city may be in shambles, Mercy can’t sit by while they wait for the army to bring help—she still has the “bossy” cheeks that mark her as someone who gets things done. But what can one teenage girl do to heal so many suffering in her broken city?

Great films, picked just for you!

Spend your afternoon enjoying free screenings of classic musicals on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Barney Library! This month's film is Bye Bye Birdie (1963).

Nightclub sensation Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) murders her philandering husband, and Chicago's slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), is set to defend her. But when Roxie (Renée Zellweger) also winds up in prison, Billy takes on her case as well -- turning her into a media circus of headlines. Neither woman will be outdone in their fight against each other and the public for fame and celebrity.

This program is part of the 2018 Farmington Libraries Summer Reading Program, which this year celebrates the book No Better Friend: One Man, One Dog, and Their Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in WWII by Robert Weintraub.

No Better Friend tells the story of Air Force technician Frank Williams and Judy, a purebred pointer, who met in WWII and were POWs in a camp in the Pacific. Judy was loyal, with a keen sense for who was friend and who was foe, and the pair's relationship deepened throughout their captivity. When the prisoners suffered beatings, Judy would interrupt by barking. She survived bombings and other near-death experiences and became a beacon for the men, who saw in her survival a flicker of hope for their own. Judy was WWII's only canine POW, and when she passed away in 1950, she was buried in her Air Force jacket. Williams would never own another dog. Their story--of an unbreakable bond forged in the worst circumstance--is one of the great undiscovered sagas of WWII.

JULY'S BOOK: The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Told in a series of vignettes – sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous–it is the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. Few other books in our time have touched so many readers.

Early in 1942, a young man from Rhode Island, Tony Pritchard, who had rarely been outside New England, went into the U.S. Army. By the time he returned home more than five years later, he had been all over the United States and Western Europe, had led troops in combat, had nearly died, had worked with refugees, and in general had encountered a world far wider and far more brutal than anything he had known.

Years later his son Arnie inherited Tony's old army foot locker. It turned out to contain hundreds of letters, photos, and other documents from this time. These sources vividly portray the people, places, and events which he encountered. They also portray the hopes, fears, and passions which he and others struggled with as they played their parts in the largest conflict in human history. As Arnie became immersed in wartime material, a narrative began to emerge, and he put his father's letters into a presentation designed to entertain, to educate, and to enlighten.  Arnie is now an historical World War II storyteller, chronicling Tony's experience of the European campaigns of 1944-45.

JULY'S BOOK: Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

The only daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has always known she’d been raised for one purpose and one purpose only: to marry. Never mind her cunning, which rivals that of her twin brother, Kenshin, or her skills as an accomplished alchemist. Since Mariko was not born a boy, her fate was sealed the moment she drew her first breath.

So, at just seventeen years old, Mariko is sent to the imperial palace to meet her betrothed, a man she did not choose, for the very first time. But the journey is cut short when Mariko’s convoy is viciously attacked by the Black Clan, a dangerous group of bandits who’ve been hired to kill Mariko before she reaches the palace.

The lone survivor, Mariko narrowly escapes to the woods, where she plots her revenge. Dressed as a peasant boy, she sets out to infiltrate the Black Clan and hunt down those responsible for the target on her back. Once she’s within their ranks, though, Mariko finds for the first time she’s appreciated for her intellect and abilities. She even finds herself falling in love—a love that will force her to question everything she’s ever known about her family, her purpose, and her deepest desires.

Great films, picked just for you!

Spend your afternoon enjoying free screenings of classic musicals on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Barney Library! This month's film is Bye Bye Birdie (1963).

Frederic (Rex Smith), who has spent his formative years as a junior pirate, plans to mark his 21st birthday by breaking free from the Pirate King (Kevin Kline) and beginning his courtship of Mabel (Linda Ronstadt). But because he was born on Feb. 29, a date that only arrives every fourth year, Frederic isn't technically 21 -- and the Pirate King is still his master. Unless something gives, Frederic will soon be on a collision course with the Pirate King's new nemesis: Mabel's father.

If you want to gain a much better understanding of your dog and its challenging behaviors, then this session led by Phil Klein, Certified Dog Listener, is for you and your family! Learn the simple, dog-friendly changes in how to interact with your dog to transform its behavior in a kind and lasting way. In doing so, you will have a calmer, happier dog and a more enjoyable relationship with it.

Topics covered will include:

  • How canines see the human world.
  • How canines communicate including the importance of eye contact and movement.
  • The underlying reasons for your dog’s behaviors like nervousness, toileting indoors, incessant barking, aggression, jumping on people, pestering for attention, destructive chewing, separation anxiety, pulling on the leash, etc.

Bring your questions, (but unfortunately not your dog) for an informative, fun session!

Please register.

About Phil Klein, Certified Dog Listener

Phil’s path to becoming a Dog Listener started when his family rescued a special dog named Abby from Labs4Rescue.  At the time, he had no idea about the journey he would be privileged to take with Abby.  Abby’s behavioral challenges were the motivation for Phil to learn a lot more about dogs and find a way to help Abby overcome her fears.  In the process, Phil discovered Jan Fennell, The Dog Listener who had developed a revolutionary method for training dogs based on their instincts.  In April 2009, Phil attended Jan Fennell’s Foundation and Advanced Canine Communications courses, thereby becoming a Certified Dog Listener.  Through in-home consultations, volunteer work with Labs4Rescue and other rescue organizations, and public talks, Phil has been honored to help over 1000 dog owners and their dogs.

AUGUST'S BOOK: 84, Charring Cross Road by Helene Hanff

This charming classic love story, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, at the time, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Their relationship, captured so acutely in these letters, is one that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world.
