misc_none 2:00 PM  -  5:00 PM Afternoon at The Bijou - The Moon is Blue     Tell a Friend

The Moon is Blue – Comedy – Hollywood’s Production Code refused to approve The Moon is Blue because of an “unacceptably light attitude toward seduction.” Among the movies offending words “virgin” and “pregnant.” But producer/director Otto Preminger, who had triumphantly stage The Moon is Blue on Broadway and had seen it become a smash hit on a national stage tour, refused to change a scene or a word. In an unprecedented move, he released the film without the Code’s seal. Audiences backed Preminger at the box office and a new era of moviemaking independence dawned.  Starring William Holden, David Niven and Maggie McNamara.  99 minutes.  Sponsored by The Friends of The Farmington Libraries

    Contact: Travis Feder   (860) 673-6791   tfeder@farmingtonlibraries.org

Take a closer look at Google Docs and discover how to build documents with rich formatting, images, and tables. In this course, Jess Stratton shows how to get around Google Docs' web-based interface, create new documents, and add features such as footnotes, headers and footers, and page numbering. You'll also see how to make your documents more engaging by adding images, Google drawing objects, and tables. Then learn how to share docs with others—for real-time, simultaneous collaboration—and take Google Docs on the go on your tablet.

Please note that this is an online video tutorial.  It includes closed captioning, but students are encouraged to bring their own headphones to listen to the instructor.  Because it's a video course, you have complete control over the video; pause, fast forward, or rewind as much as you need!  If you will require special assistance in order to participate in this program, please contact the library in advance.

THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE AT THE LEWIS WALPOLE LIBRARY

“Prospects of Empire: Slavery and Ecology in Eighteenth-Century Atlantic Britain” explores the notion of empire’s “prospects”—its gaze upon bodies and landscapes, its speculations and desires, its endeavors to capitalize upon seized land and labor, as well as its failures to manage enslaved persons and unruly colonial ecologies.  It reads latent anxieties in the policing of bodies and borders, both in the colonies and in the metropole, and examines the forces that empire mustered to curtail perceived threats to its regimes of power and knowledge.  In addition to the focus on material from the long eighteenth century, the exhibition features a selection of four lithographs from Joscelyn Gardner’s series Creole Portraits III: “bringing down the flowers” (2009-11), a recent joint acquisition by the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery.  Gardner’s work mines the eighteenth-century Jamaica archive of white English immigrant, overseer, slaveowner, and pen-keeper Thomas Thistlewood, one of whose diaries is on loan from the Beinecke Library.

There will be a talk, a Q&A session, an opportunity to view the exhibition with the curator on hand to answer questions, and will end with refreshments.  For more information on the exhibit and the Lewis Walpole Library, visit their website at: http://www.library.yale.edu/walpole/programs/exhibitions.html#ce.

A Double Life – Drama – 1947 - Anthony John is an actor whose life is strongly influenced by the characters he plays. When he's playing comedy, he's the most enjoyable person in the world, but when he's playing drama, it's terrible to be around him. That's the reason why his wife Brita divorced him; although she still loves him and works with him, she couldn't stand living with him anymore. So when Anthony accepts to play Othello, he devotes himself entirely to the part, but it soon overwhelms him and with each day his mind gets filled more and more with Othello's murderous jealousy. Starring Ronald Colman, Signe Hasso, Edmond O’Brien and Shelly Winters. 104 minutes. Sponsored by The Friends of The Farmington Libraries

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  5:00 PM Afternoon at The Bijou - Starlift     Tell a Friend

Starlift – Musical/Comedy - Air Force fliers Rick Williams and Mike Nolan attempt to meet film star Nell Wayne, with whom Rick shares a hometown but not much else. Fellow film stars Doris Day and Ruth Roman mistakenly believe Rick to be very close to Nell and arrange for him to meet her. The pair begin to form a match, especially after Nell, Doris, and Ruth arrange for Hollywood stars to perform for G.I.s in transit to and from the Korean War, at Travis Air Base. But Nell thinks Rick is getting ready to ship out to the war, when in reality, he and Mike ferry troops part of the way then return to Travis Air Base with returning soldiers. Nell is furious with Rick for letting her believe he was headed to a war zone, especially because the press has made a huge story of their romance. Meantime, a new program, Operation Starlift, has been set in place by the Air Force and the Hollywood studios, whereby stars are flown to San Francisco to perform for the outbound and inbound troops. Movie stars such as Randolph Scott, Phil Harris, and Jane Wyman pitch in to entertain the troops. Rick volunteers for duty in a combat zone, and Nell begins to think she's been wrong about him.  103 minutes.  Sponsored by The Friends of The Farmington Libraries

Featuring a personal Foreword by Patrick Hemingway, Ernest’s sole surviving son, and an Introduction by grandson of the author, Seán Hemingway, editor of this edition..."(Amazon.com, 2014)

First take a tour of the interface, where author Chris Grover shows you where to locate the Word editing features and get information about your documents. Chris then shows you how to set up a document to your exact specifications, with the correct page orientation, size, spacing, and breaks. April in Paris – Musical/Comedy – 1951 - Miss Ethel 'Dynamite' Jackson is a chorus girl who mistakingly receives an invitation from the State Department to represent the American theatre at an arts exposition in Paris, France. There's only one problem, the invitation was meant for Miss Ethel Barrymore. Meanwhile, S. Winthrop Putnam, the bureaucrat who made the mistake tries unsuccessfully to correct his mix-up. It's too late, for Dynamite Jackson is off to Paris, where the two meet and marry, or so they think!  100 minutes.  Sponsored by The Friends of The Farmington Libraries
