    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the chamber music world today. The only group of its kind, the Duo was formed with the idea of playing South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar, and in doing so, creating passionate music that moves at ease between the Baroque, South American folk rhythms and new pieces written especially for the Duo. The performances of Scott Hill (guitar) and Carlos Boltes (charango and viola) oscillate from the beautiful and serene to strong and pulsating, taking audiences on a journey to new musical heights.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

The Farmington Garden Club and the Farmington Libraries are pleased to host bestselling author, Kathryn Aalto! Ms. Aalto is a writer, landscape designer, garden historian and lecturer who for the past twenty five years has written about “places where nature and culture intersect.” The popular speaker and storyteller has a special interest in the geography of childhood and literary landscapes.

In her two books, The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood (2015) and Nature and Human Invention, Ms. Aalto has written about  places that inspired the stories along with the real forest’s rare flora and fauna. “In writing and design,” Ms. Aalto remarks, “both knit narratives — one with plants, the other with words.”

Kathryn Aalto lectures in England and the United States at arboretums, libraries, art and natural history museums, garden clubs and book festivals. She also teaches a range of literary and landscape courses. In her lively presentations she takes people on an illustrated journey to learn about one of the best known and loved natural settings, the Hundred Acre Wood of A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. Ms. Aalto’s presentations are part travelogue, biography and natural history.

Spend your afternnon enjoying free screenings of critically-acclaimed and award-winning films, the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Barney Library! This month's film is The Glass Castle (2017).

Based on a memoir, four siblings must learn to take care of themselves as their responsibility-averse, free-spirit parents both inspire and inhibit them. When sober, the children's brilliant and charismatic father captured their imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Meanwhile, their mother abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want to take on the work of raising a family.

Rated PG-13. 127 minutes. Please register.

Attention Parents, Grandparents, Foster Parents, and Caregivers: This is 6-week class is for you!

At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what is might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you.  The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.

Using the COS-P model developed by the Circle of Security® originators, our trained facilitator work with parents and caregivers to help them to:

  • Understand their child's emotional world by learning to read emotional needs
  • Support their child's ability to successfully manage emotions
  • Enhance the development of their child's self-esteem
  • Honor the innate wisdom and desire for their child to be secure

MARCH'S BOOK: The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa

The narrator's housekeeping agency dispatches her to the house of the Professor, a former mathematician who can remember new memories for only 80 minutes. She is more than a little frustrated to find that he loves only mathematics and shows no interest whatsoever in anything or anyone else. One day, upon learning that she has a 10-year-old son waiting home alone until late at night every day, the Professor flies into a rage and tells the narrator to have her son come to his home directly from school from that day on. The next day, her son comes and the Professor nicknames him "Root". From then on, their days begin to be filled with warmth.

Life On Parole is a look behind the scenes of Connecticut's efforts to change the way parole works and reduce the number of people returning to prison. In collaboration with the New York Times, the film follows four former prisoners as they navigate the challenges of their first year on parole. First aired on Frontline. The film will be followed by a discussion with former parolees, parole officers, and one of the producers of the film.

Presented by the Institute for Municipal & Regional Policy at Central Connecticut State University, the UConn Humanities Institute and Hartford Listens.

The Farmington Libraries and ForwardCT Community Issues Series brings together experts to shed light on issues facing Connecticut and its citizens and to discuss how to get involved and take action. ForwardCT is a grassroots organization focused on connecting, informing, and inspiring progressive local action.

Are you a little less Y and a little more A, but can’t get enough of YA books? It’s ok, no really, it’s okay. This book group is for you! Whether you first found yourself drawn to teen books when the Hunger Games hit the big-screen or if you have been a lifelong fan, this group is for you. Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. We meet monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7PM at the Farmington Main Library. A limited number of copies of each book on the list will be available for loan at the library, or bring your own! Refreshments will be provided.

APRIL'S BOOK: Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

It’s 1950 and the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets. Seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her her conscience, her loyalties, and her darkest fears. Caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld, Josie must choose—between who she is now and who she longs to become, between when to hold on and how to let go.

APRIL'S BOOK: One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus

The story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

MAY'S BOOK: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. While Maya is content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world if torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire ... But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree taht bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most ... including herself.
