nat_sun 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM He Named Me Malala Documentary Screening     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

He Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) shows us how Malala, her father Zia and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers. Rated PG-13.

This program is made possible in part by the Malala Fund, whose goal is to enable girls to complete 12 years of safe, quality education so that they can achieve their potential and be positive change-makers in their families and communities.

Please register.

This program is part of the Farmington Libraries Adult Summer Reading Program. This year we are focusing on the book I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, which tells the story of Malala Yousafzai. When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, Malala fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, 9 October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price when she was shot in the head at point-blank range. She is now an internationally recognized activist and Nobel Laureate.

Death on the Diamond (1934) - Mystery/Suspense— And it's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game - forever. The St. Louis Cardinals may be a hard-luck club rallying toward the pennant, but with a killer afoot, they're on a losing streak - of lives! A brisk, well-played matchup of whodunit and national pastime, Death on the Diamond boasts a roster of all-stars who hit this improbable plot out of the park with humor and conviction. After batboy Mickey Rooney finds acid-laced gloves at spring training, suspects and targets mount all season long, compelling pitcher Robert Young - himself a suspect despite dodging two assassination attempts - to bring his A-game to catching the murderer. Is it a financier poised to snatch the franchise from it's indebted owner, a gambling cartel angling to improve it's odds, ex-players ejected in a betting scandal, Young's rival for club secretary, Madge Evans - or someone else? With on-deck supporting pros Nat Pendleton, Ted Healy, Paul Kelly, Edward Brophy and blinkof-the-eye hotdog vendor Walter Brennan, Death on the Diamond swings for the fences and scores.   71 min.

Education is one of the most critical areas of empowerment for women ... It is also an area that offers some of the clearest examples of discrimination women suffer. Among children not attending school there are twice as many girls as boys, and among illiterate adults there are twice as many women as men.

Offering girls basic education is one sure way of giving them much greater power -- of enabling them to make genuine choices over the kinds of lives they wish to lead. This is not a luxury. The Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women establish it as a basic human right. - UNICEF

Sarah Odell, English Teacher and Coach at Miss Porter’s School, will join us to discuss the importance of high-quality education for women and girls.

Gain a new perspective! Noora Brown, founding Board Member of the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center in Avon, will give an illuminating talk on women and Islam, particularly media perceptions about Muslim women today in contrast with the historical role women have played in Islam.

In addition to her role at the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center, Noora Brown has her Masters degree from Hartford Seminary in Christian/Muslim Relations and serves as the Interfaith Chairwoman. A stay-at-home mom to 3 children who attend Farmington public schools, Noora enjoys watching her kids play sports, reading and volunteering in the community. A self described hijabi (woman who wears a scarf), Noora is always willing to talk about her faith and explain the virtue and the values of Islam.

Sheri is an accomplished and acclaimed New York-based singer and songwriter, who expresses herself through a beautiful and unique blend of rock, blues, pop, folk.

Born to an opera singer and classical pianist mother, Sheri had a love of music from a very young age. Upon releasing her critically-acclaimed EP “Mantra,” Sheri was named one of Music Connection’s “Hot 100 Unsigned Artists,” and was played on radio stations KCRW and WXPN among others. She has also co-wrote songs with Grammy-Award winning songwriters J.D. Souther (The Eagles), Al Anderson (NRBQ), Jill Sobule, Shawn Mullins, Marcus Hummon, Tony Scalzo (Fastball) and Kim Richey, as well as other hit songwriters. Sheri is now in production for her new record, to be released in 2015.

In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the 2nd floor Hoppin Gallery.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.
