Cynthia Roman, Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Paintings at the Lewis Walpole Library and co-curator of the current exhibition will talk about “James Gillray’s Hogarthian Progress.” Sequential narration in satiric prints is most famously associated with the “modern moral subjects” of William Hogarth (1697–1764). James Gillray (1756–1815), celebrated for his innovative single-plate satires, was among the most accomplished printmakers to adopt Hogarthian sequential narration even as he transformed it according to his unique vision. This exhibition presents a number of Gillray’s Hogarthian progresses alongside some selected prints by Hogarth himself.

Catch up on Season 3 of Downtown Abbey while enjoying a hot cup of tea and cookies.

Downton Abbey has weathered the war, and the prospect of an impending wedding for Mary and Matthew brings great anticipation, as well as Cora’s mother from America, Martha Levinson. New World and Old World are about to clash as Martha tests tradition at Downton, and the patience of the formidable Lady Violet.

Aside from the sparks upstairs, a very real crisis threatens the foundation and future of Downton. Great houses have been crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I, and Downton may not be exempt. In response, Robert clings decisively to his duty to maintain the home at all costs. But in this changing landscape, nothing is assured, and even the Crawleys may be faced with a new battle to safeguard their beloved Downton.

nat_sun 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM He Named Me Malala Documentary Screening     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

He Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) shows us how Malala, her father Zia and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.

This program is made possible in part by the Malala Fund, whose goal is to enable girls to complete 12 years of safe, quality education so that they can achieve their potential and be positive change-makers in their families and communities.

Please register.

This program is part of the Farmington Libraries Adult Summer Reading Jam. This year we are focusing on the book I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, which tells the story of Malala Yousafzai. When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, Malala fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, 9 October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price when she was shot in the head at point-blank range. She is now an internationally recognized activist and Nobel Laureate.

Death on the Diamond (1934) - Mystery/Suspense— And it's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game - forever. The St. Louis Cardinals may be a hard-luck club rallying toward the pennant, but with a killer afoot, they're on a losing streak - of lives! A brisk, well-played matchup of whodunit and national pastime, Death on the Diamond boasts a roster of all-stars who hit this improbable plot out of the park with humor and conviction. After batboy Mickey Rooney finds acid-laced gloves at spring training, suspects and targets mount all season long, compelling pitcher Robert Young - himself a suspect despite dodging two assassination attempts - to bring his A-game to catching the murderer. Is it a financier poised to snatch the franchise from it's indebted owner, a gambling cartel angling to improve it's odds, ex-players ejected in a betting scandal, Young's rival for club secretary, Madge Evans - or someone else? With on-deck supporting pros Nat Pendleton, Ted Healy, Paul Kelly, Edward Brophy and blinkof-the-eye hotdog vendor Walter Brennan, Death on the Diamond swings for the fences and scores.   71 min.
