Twenty-six year old charmer Daniel Dembélé is equal parts West African and Italian, and looking to make his mark on the world. Seizing the moment at a crossroads in his life, Daniel returns to his homeland in Mali to start a local business building recycled solar panels from scraps – the first of its kind in this sun-drenched nation near the Sahara Desert. Daniel’s goal is to electrify the households of rural communities, 99% of which live without power.

Burning in the Sun is the story of Daniel’s journey of growing his idea into a viable company, and to see his dream of improving the lives of his countrymen realized, beginning with the small village of Banko. With controversial stances on sustainable energy, poverty, and African self-sufficiency, the documentary explores what it means to become your own man and the small steps that can change the destiny of a nation.

Join us to watch this award-winning film. 2011, 83 minutes.

Drawing on a wide variety of traditional music forms, the Bluelights have created a new musical style respecting equally the past and present.  A typical Bluelights performance might include original music, early jazz, blues, swing, standards, jug band, gospel, pop music from the turn of the century and roots rock’n’roll. Starting in 1986, they continue to perform at festivals, concerts and clubs through out North America. Their most recent triumph was to win the 2008 State of CT Blues Challenge and the opportunity to represent their state in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.

ISIS, or Islamic State of Iraq & Syria, has been prominent in the news in recent years, claiming to represent Islam as whole. Our three presenters, religious scholars and educators, will detail how the wider Islamic community differs from this extremist group. They will discuss, among other things, how the name Islam derives from the word 'Salaam,' which means 'peace' in Arabic; how the Quran, the Muslim holy book, and the Prophetic Tradition (Hadith), expound justice, tolerance, peace, and love for one's neighbors.

In this short presentation, learn the tenets of Islam, the origin of religious justification used by ISIS to kill Muslims and people of other faith groups, and hear the perspective of practicing Muslims in your community.

Presenters:

Sammy Aziz is a student of Muslim-Christian relations at Hartford Seminary and a  member of the Bloomfield Muslim Community Center.

Vjosa Aziz works for the Madina Academy Islamic School in Windsor and is a member of Bloomfield Muslim Community Center.

John Parent is a student of Transformative Leadership and Spirituality at Hartford  Seminary. John is active in promoting interfaith relations, education, understanding, peace and fellowship via various networks, joint-services, and community educational opportunities throughout the greater Hartford area.

The last year of Franz Schubert’s life was marked by professional disappointment and very poor health. Despite these handicaps, he wrote music seamlessly and at an incredible clip, producing one masterpiece after another until just weeks before his early death. Jeffrey Engel will relate in detail the tragic life of Schubert and showcase some of the extraordinary music he created in 1828.

Mr. Engel is a music historian who teaches at Northwestern Connecticut Community College. In 2010 he was selected by "Litchfield Magazine" as one of the fifty most influential people in Litchfield county.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Rosenthals are New England’s finest father/son bluegrass/folk/jazz trio on the scene today! Connecticut native, Phil Rosenthal, is known to audiences world-wide as the former lead singer of the seminal bluegrass band, The Seldom Scene. He has teamed up with his son, trumpet virtuoso, Daniel Rosenthal, to create a group with a musical landscape and language unlike any other on the market today. The two combine elements of bluegrass, folk and jazz into a seamless mix, with the unusual instrumentation of banjo, trumpet and plenty of vocal harmonies.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.
