8 Women – French/Subtitles, 2002, Comedy.  Academy Award nominee Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, and Fanny Ardant star in this outrageous mystery about a wealthy industrialist who has been found murdered in his home while his family gathers for the holiday season. The house is isolated in a snowstorm and the phone lines have been cut.  Eight women are his potential murderers: his calculating wife, his two mischievous daughters, his meddling mother-in-law, his neurotic sister-in-law, his sexy sister, the faithful family cook and the sultry new maid. Each woman is a suspect. Each has a motive. Beautiful, tempestuous, intelligent, sensual and dangerous . . . one of them is guilty. Which one is it? (Rated R,  112 minutes)

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Monday Night Movie - In The Name Of     Tell a Friend

In The Name Of – Poland/Subtitles, 2013, Biography/Drama. Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a rural Polish village where he works with troubled teens. He declines the advances of a young blonde named Ewa, saying he is already spoken for by God. However, celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection.  Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Lukasz, the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family, Adam’s self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.  In The Name Of is a film about confused emotions, repression and loneliness – and the possibility of perhaps finding oneself after all. (102 minutes)

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:45 PM Director's College Event - Documentary Film: GMO OMG     Tell a Friend

GMO OMG director and concerned father Jeremy Seifert is in search of answers. How do GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, and our freedom of choice? And perhaps the ultimate question, which Seifert tests himself: is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can’t gain back? These and other questions take Seifert on a journey from his family’s table to Haiti, Paris, Norway, and the lobby of agra-giant Monsanto, from which he is unceremoniously ejected. Along the way we gain insight into a question that is of growing concern to citizens the world over: what's on your plate? - See more at: http://www.gmofilm.com/#sthash.uGxafyeT.dpuf

A discussion with members of GMO Free CT will lead a discussion and question and answer period immediately following the film.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM A Collection’s Progress: The Lewis Walpole Library 2000-2014     Tell a Friend

The Lewis Walpole Library will host a special showing of its current exhibition, A Collection’s Progress: The Lewis Walpole Library, 2000-2014, complete with a lecture from exhibition curator, Margaret Powell. This event is co-sponsored by the Farmington Libraries and the Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University, and will take place at the Lewis Walpole Library at 154 Main Street, Farmington, at 7:00 p.m.

When Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis left his library to Yale in 1979 Lewis thought of his gift not as a finished monument but as a living thing that required growth and change lest it become, in his words, “static and moldy.”  The exhibition presents materials selected from the LWL’s collecting successes of the last fourteen years. Together the objects on display argue forcefully for the Library’s conquest of stasis and mold, and each speaks eloquently of another time, its politics and conflicts, its arts, fashions, and pastimes.

Seating is limited for this event; please register in advance by calling 860-673-6791, using the online link, or visiting the Farmington Main Library's Adult Desk.

This workshop is for parents having trouble getting their baby or toddler on a nighttime and naptime sleep pattern that they can live with. A presenter from The Parent Child Center of Bristol Hospital will discuss how much sleep children typically need at each age, how to establish healthy bedtime routines, how reaching new developmental stages may impact a child's current sleep pattern, and how to gently and lovingly help your child learn to sleep through the night, without requiring them to simply "cry it out." This program is made possibly through funding from the Farmington Exchange Club. To facilitate participation of parents of infants and toddlers, Small Talk and Wonderful Ones will not meet on October 9. Please register.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Classic Book Group: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich     Tell a Friend

Ivan Denisovich, a common carpenter, is one of millions viciously imprisoned for countless years on baseless charges, sentenced to the waking nightmares of the Soviet work camps in Siberia.  Even in the face of degrading hatred, where life is reduced to a bowl of gruel and a rare cigarette, hope and dignity prevail.  This powerful novel of fact is a scathing indictment of Communist tyranny, and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit.

The Classic Book Group is led by Professor Nels Highberg. He holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Hartford.

Copies of the book will be available at the main library. Please register in advance by calling 860-673-6791, using the online link, or visiting the Information Desk.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Farmington Libraries and is free and open to the public.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Let it Be: The Beatles, January 1969     Tell a Friend

January 1969, in which the Beatles recorded what would ultimately constitute the album Let it Be, is paradoxically both the least understood and most well-documented month of the band's entire existence. This 90-minute multimedia presentation will explain what happened during that fractious month through quotes from the band members and “fly on the wall” excerpts from the recording sessions.

One of the nation's foremost up-and-coming Beatles scholars, Aaron Krerowicz moved to Connecticut in 2010 to matriculate at the University of Hartford, graduating in 2012 with an Artist Diploma in music composition. While still a student, Aaron won a grant to research and analyze the music of the Beatles. He has presented his findings in formal lectures at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford and the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and has also presented at the University of Pensylvannia Altoona as part of their "International Beatles Conference" celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles' historic first Ed Sullivan Show broadcast. In addition, he leads many adult-level discussion courses on the band throughout Connecticut.
