Sheri Miller returns to the Farmington Libraries this summer!

Sheri is an accomplished and acclaimed New York-based singer and songwriter, who expresses herself through a beautiful and unique blend of rock, blues, pop, folk.

Born to an opera singer and classical pianist mother, Sheri had a love of music from a very young age. Upon releasing her critically-acclaimed EP “Mantra,” Sheri was named one of Music Connection’s “Hot 100 Unsigned Artists,” and was played on radio stations KCRW and WXPN among others. She has also co-wrote songs with Grammy-Award winning songwriters J.D. Souther (The Eagles), Al Anderson (NRBQ), Jill Sobule, Shawn Mullins, Marcus Hummon, Tony Scalzo (Fastball) and Kim Richey, as well as other hit songwriters. Sheri is now in production for her new record, to be released in 2015.

Please register.

In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the 2nd floor Hoppin Gallery.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Author Fred Golder will present the incredible story of a Holocaust survivor persecuted by the Nazis and victimized by the American Court system. Based on a true story, “When God Looked Down and Wept” is an account of one man’s physical and spiritual endurance and his battle against discrimination and right to freedom of religious expression.

This incredible story is one that was almost not told. Out of the millions that were imprisoned and perished in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, Benjamin survived the Mauthausen sub-camp at Melk and the hellish nightmare that was Gunskirchen.

Benjamin immigrated to the United States and became a respected public school teacher. So imagine his horror when, one day, he was unceremoniously fired for being “Too Jewish.”

When Boston-based civil rights attorney and author, Frederick Golder, heard about the ‘reason’ for Benjamin’s dismissal he took on the case—pro bono. During meetings for the purpose of putting together a lawsuit, Benjamin slowly and painfully related the details of his ordeal to the author. “When God Looked Down and Wept” is the result. It is an account of one man’s physical and spiritual endurance as well as his battle against discrimination and for the First Amendment right to freedom of religious expression.

Please register.

Remember when you listened, sang, and danced to the great old tunes of the 1920's through 1940's? Has it been a while? Let the Survivors Swing Band revive those memories for you and get your toes a-tappin' and fingers snappin' in the process!  Do you want to dance, too?  Get up and go for it!

The Survivors Swing Band generates energy and excitement everywhere they perform. They are a 7-piece professional jazz band, based in Connecticut, that plays the classic melodies from an era gone by--hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era--plus many of the wonderful melodies from the two decades that followed. The "Big Bands" played this music with a high degree of rigid orchestration. The Survivors render it with a greater tilt towards improvisation, thus giving each pass at a tune somewhat of a new flavor while still keeping true to the original melodies. Your memories of the "good old good ones" that they play will be readily revived! With trumpet, saxes, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, let them entertain you!

Please register.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

Autumn is a time of bounty and harvest for woodland creatures and foragers alike: nuts are falling to the forest floor, fruits are ripening and scenting the crisp fall air, roots and tubers are thickening up in anticipation of sustaining the plants through the tough winter, and edible fungi can be found in astounding amounts. Learn how to identify, sustainably harvest, and prepare the wild foods of autumn, from acorns through minty wintergreen leaves, including golden honey mushrooms and maitake, the “dancing mushroom”.

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this fall!

1916. While war rages in the Ottomon Empire, Hussein raises his younger brother, Theeb ("Wolf"), in a traditional Bedouin community that is isolated by the vast, unforgiving desert. The brothers' quiet existence is suddenly interrupted when a British Army officer arrives looking for a guide to lead him through dangerous terrain riddled with mercenaries, revolutionaries and outcast raiders. Not rated. 100 minutes.

Winner of Best Director at the 2014 Venice Film Festvial, "Naji Aby Nowar's impressive feature" is a "quietly gripping adventure tale" that heralds "the inauguration of a new film genre: the Bedouin western." 2016 Academy Award Nominee, Best Foreign Language Film.

Catch the newest critically-acclaimed independent films this fall!

Legendary directing team Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (The Night of the Shooting Stars, Caesar Must Die) offer an evocative new take on the classic work The Decameron. Ten young men and women escape plague stricken Florence for a countryside estate where they regale each other with bawdy tales of love, destiny and desire. This story about storytelling is a beautiful paean to Italian history, art and the imagination. Not rated. 120 minutes.
