....Picture this....You are at the local Starbucks, You see Bill and Mary, former neighbors who have just moved back to Farmington.  You have not seen them for a few years, and have lost touch. You are happy to spot them and go over to say hello. The first thing they say is that their grandson died in an auto accident last month......WHAT on earth do you say in this awkward situation?

Join us for a discussion in which Ethel-Anne will offer suggestions for some things TO Say and NOT to Say to Grievers....And remember, grievers may be experiencing loss not only due to a death, but from other losses such as: divorce, pet loss, estrangements, jobs, homes, custody, and loss due to injury or illness.

Ethel-Anne has been a certified Grief Recovery Method Specialist for 14 years. She has helped many people move from the pain of grief to recovery and relief. She looks forward to speaking with us at The Farmington Library!

These and many other questions will be discussed at the Going Native presentation offered by Margery Winters. For a woman – (France)  In her mid-thirties, Anne still knows practically nothing of her family’s past. After her mother’s death, Anne discovers old photos and letters that convince her to take a closer look at her parents’ life after the concentration camps of World War II. Her search reveals the existence of a mysterious uncle everyone seems intent on forgetting entirely. As she closes in on a discovery she didn’t expect, her father grows ever more ill, and may take the family secret to his grave. In a journey that stretches from post-war France and to the 1980’s, Anne’s destiny intertwines with her father’s past until they form a single, unforgettable story.  (2013, 110 minutes)

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Director's College Event: Irish Women in Domestic Service     Tell a Friend

The Irish Domestic In 1800s Connecticut: Shades Of "Downton Abbey."  Faced with starvation in their native land, a multitude of brave Irish women faced the perils of an Atlantic crossing during the 1800s in the hope of becoming domestic servants in the United States. Thousands landed, lived, and worked in Connecticut, resulting in drama occasionally reminiscent of scenes from "Downton Abbey."

Neil Hogan, editor of the Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society's newsletter, "The Shanachie," will share research and stories collected as part of the Society's ongoing oral history project.

This event is free and open to the public. To register, please call the library at 860-673-6791, use the online link, or visit the Adult Desk.

Back by popular demand! The Survivors Swing Band is a 7-piece ensemble made up of recent retirees and senior citizens, calling themselves the "Survivors" in acknowledgement of some of the original band members who had passed away, as well as in recognition of those beloved old melodies that remained favorites despite the passage of the decades. Come celebrate the nostalgic 1940s with hits from Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and other favorites. More information about the Survivors Swing Band can be found on their web site: http://www.survivorssb.com/

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.
