    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Is your child/Has your older child been:

  • Shy, “fussy”, fearful of new situations?
  • A vivid dreamer, distressed by scary movies, and prone to hurt feelings?
  • Showing thought beyond her/his years as well as a high level of compassion?

Your child may be a highly sensitive child/teen. Roughly 20% of the population is Highly Sensitive, which is an inborn trait that does not change throughout life. This program will help dispel the mystery behind the term “Highly Sensitive” and give parents and caretakers an insight into how young people with this nature operate in the world. It will also give guidance in helping them to thrive in a not so sensitive world.

Presenter Maura Harris is an educational therapist and learning strategist who has worked with many highly sensitive children, pre-teens, and teens for the past 15 years.  She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Saint Joseph in Special Education. She, herself, is a highly sensitive person and has studied this subject since that realization, which came in her teens. She has an educational therapy practice in West Hartford, SEA Educational Support, where she supports students socially, and emotionally, and academically during their school years.

Muriel Anderson’s renowned guitar and harp guitar playing is highlighted by a backdrop of stunning visuals by celebrated photo-artist and cinematographer Bryan Allen. Together they bring you on a musical and visual journey around the world, full of joy and humanity, with new tunes, old favorites, stories, and images.

One of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. Her recent CD “Nightlight Daylight” has won top honors in 11 national awards. She has performed/recorded with Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Victor Wooten and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Her obvious joy of music, humor and her facility across the genres of folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. An engaging performer, Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, a Spanish classic. Her video “Why Worry” currently has over 6.5 million views on Dire Straits’ FB page.

Music pervaded public and private spaces in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England; yet, in 1904, German critic Oscar Adolf Hermann Schmitz, heightening long-standing aspersions, dismissed England as a “land without music.” This unflattering epithet pointed to England’s meager contributions to the western musical canon during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries—no English Gluck, Mozart, or Verdi; no English operatic or symphonic tradition that could rival those that flourished on the continent.  The English, critics like Schmitz suggested, were importers rather than producers—tasteless consumers and dilettantes rather than discerning, proficient practitioners.  This view did not originate with continental nationalists; in the eighteenth century the English often presented themselves as uniquely unmusical in print and in visual satire.  At once self-effacing and boastful, this representation asserted a national character too sensible, too chaste, too sober to permit the excesses of musical genius.  Bringing together satirical prints and documents pertaining to English music makers and listeners, this exhibition explores English attitudes toward music as lascivious, feminine, foreign, frivolous, and distinctly un-English.

Enter the construction zone!  Sparky’s Puppets will perform “Build a Better World” at the Barney Branch Library in Farmington on Monday, July 17 at 10:00 A.M.  In this show, the “Three Little Pigs” are hard at work on their houses, trying to protect themselves from the Big Bad Wolf.  And, in another story, a fisherman meets a talking fish that can make wishes come true.  The magic wishes make a cottage, a mansion, and a castle suddenly spring up on the beach!  Other tales will complete the program.

Sparky’s Puppets dramatize favorite children’s stories with colorful hand puppets, lively humor and plenty of audience participation.  For over 37 years, they have delighted children and family audiences throughout New England.  This show was especially created for the library’s summer reading program theme.

    Location: Hoppin Gallery at Barney
        There are 75 spaces available.
