Is your child/Has your older child been:

  • Shy, “fussy”, fearful of new situations?
  • A vivid dreamer, distressed by scary movies, and prone to hurt feelings?
  • Showing thought beyond her/his years as well as a high level of compassion?

Your child may be a highly sensitive child/teen. Roughly 20% of the population is Highly Sensitive, which is an inborn trait that does not change throughout life. This program will help dispel the mystery behind the term “Highly Sensitive” and give parents and caretakers an insight into how young people with this nature operate in the world. It will also give guidance in helping them to thrive in a not so sensitive world.

Presenter Maura Harris is an educational therapist and learning strategist who has worked with many highly sensitive children, pre-teens, and teens for the past 15 years.  She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Saint Joseph in Special Education. She, herself, is a highly sensitive person and has studied this subject since that realization, which came in her teens. She has an educational therapy practice in West Hartford, SEA Educational Support, where she supports students socially, and emotionally, and academically during their school years.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Lost Acres String Band serves up a rich stew of songs and instrumentals from a wide variety of musical traditions, with the added spice of some exotic originals.  A typical show includes blues, rags, old-time and contemporary fiddle tunes, Hispanic waltzes from the old Southwest, a classic string-band number by The Mississippi Sheiks, swing tunes from the 1930's, and a Ray Charles instrumental.

Writing in Fiddler magazine, Grammy-winner Stacy Phillips called the band's music "impossible to pigeonhole...an unpretentious mood-booster...ranging confidently through several different styles, all handled with aplomb."  The Middletown Eye called it “an instrumental delight.  From reels to waltzes, acoustic blues to ‘swing’ tunes…impeccably played."

After study of Western classical and South Indian classical violin, since 1975 Gordon Swift has been playing fiddle, electric violin, and baritone violectra in bands ranging from jazz-rock fusion to reggae to country-and-western.  He blends musical influences from around the world into a distinctively American violin/fiddle style.  Gordon organized The Lost Acres String Band in 2008 and writes most of the band's original material.

Master guitarist Paul Howard is a long-time member of the CT Americana/string band Last Fair Deal, with whom he has recorded four albums.  Paul runs Valley Music School in Avon and is a founding faculty member of the National Guitar Workshop with five music instruction books to his credit.  Paul is an eclectic guitarist bringing influences from swing, old-time, bluegrass, and folk/rock music; he’s also an accomplished vocalist.

Jon Swift (Gordon's brother) is a veteran of the New England bluegrass and roots music scene.  He was a founding member of the popular bluegrass band Traver Hollow, playing bass and singing with the group for 13 years.  He has also sung and played bass or acoustic guitar in several other groups (currently BluesGrass and Deep Ellum) as well as performing solo.  Appearing here on upright bass, Jon lays down a solid foundation for the band.

Please register.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

Muriel Anderson’s renowned guitar and harp guitar playing is highlighted by a backdrop of stunning visuals by celebrated photo-artist and cinematographer Bryan Allen. Together they bring you on a musical and visual journey around the world, full of joy and humanity, with new tunes, old favorites, stories, and images.

One of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. Her recent CD “Nightlight Daylight” has won top honors in 11 national awards. She has performed/recorded with Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Victor Wooten and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Her obvious joy of music, humor and her facility across the genres of folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. An engaging performer, Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, a Spanish classic. Her video “Why Worry” currently has over 6.5 million views on Dire Straits’ FB page.

Please register.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Music pervaded public and private spaces in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England; yet, in 1904, German critic Oscar Adolf Hermann Schmitz, heightening long-standing aspersions, dismissed England as a “land without music.” This unflattering epithet pointed to England’s meager contributions to the western musical canon during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries—no English Gluck, Mozart, or Verdi; no English operatic or symphonic tradition that could rival those that flourished on the continent.  The English, critics like Schmitz suggested, were importers rather than producers—tasteless consumers and dilettantes rather than discerning, proficient practitioners.  This view did not originate with continental nationalists; in the eighteenth century the English often presented themselves as uniquely unmusical in print and in visual satire.  At once self-effacing and boastful, this representation asserted a national character too sensible, too chaste, too sober to permit the excesses of musical genius.  Bringing together satirical prints and documents pertaining to English music makers and listeners, this exhibition explores English attitudes toward music as lascivious, feminine, foreign, frivolous, and distinctly un-English.
