Feature Film: Selma

Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Connecticut has the 2nd highest cost of long-term care in the nation. So unless you’re planning to leave the state, you need to protect yourself and your retirement assets from long-term care costs. Should you give your home to your children? How can you get the state to pay for nursing home and home care? How can you qualify for Medicaid benefits while keeping your assets? If you know the rules and plan ahead, you can still protect your hard-earned assets.

Presenters Brendan F. Daly and Carmine Perry are lawyers with CzepigaDalyPope LLC, a law firm specializing in estate planning and senior law.

Catch up on Season 3 of Downtown Abbey while enjoying a hot cup of tea and cookies.

Downton Abbey has weathered the war, and the prospect of an impending wedding for Mary and Matthew brings great anticipation, as well as Cora’s mother from America, Martha Levinson. New World and Old World are about to clash as Martha tests tradition at Downton, and the patience of the formidable Lady Violet.

Aside from the sparks upstairs, a very real crisis threatens the foundation and future of Downton. Great houses have been crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I, and Downton may not be exempt. In response, Robert clings decisively to his duty to maintain the home at all costs. But in this changing landscape, nothing is assured, and even the Crawleys may be faced with a new battle to safeguard their beloved Downton.

Discover what life was really like for New England's colonial women as you hear how they dealt with menstruation, sex and birth control, childbirth, sickness, and medicine. “The Not-So-Good Life of the Colonial Goodwife” is not about quilting bees and spinning wheels – it’s an interactive presentation about the little-known issues faced by everyday women during this time. Even history buffs will learn a thing or two during this fascinating and amusing presentation.

Presenter Velya Jancz-Urban is a teacher, author, former Brazilian dairy farm owner, and expert on New England’s colonial women. Moving into a 1770 Connecticut farmhouse ignited Velya's interest in the colonial era. While researching her novel, Acquiescence, she became fascinated with the lives of everyday colonial women.

No registration required.

No registration required.
