    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Rosenthals are New England’s finest father/son bluegrass/folk/jazz trio on the scene today! Connecticut native, Phil Rosenthal, is known to audiences world-wide as the former lead singer of the seminal bluegrass band, The Seldom Scene. He has teamed up with his son, trumpet virtuoso, Daniel Rosenthal, to create a group with a musical landscape and language unlike any other on the market today. The two combine elements of bluegrass, folk and jazz into a seamless mix, with the unusual instrumentation of banjo, trumpet and plenty of vocal harmonies.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.

British mystery lovers are invited to join us this summer to enjoy the beloved series Midsomer Murders, served with tea and biscuits. Viewings will take place on Thursday June 4, July 23, and August 20 at 1:00 p.m. at the Barney Library.

Midsomer Murders is a long-running and iconic British television series that chronicles Detective Tom Barnaby’s attempts to uncover secrets and solve murders in the seemingly idyllic villages of the fictional Midsomer County.

This month's episode is "Death in Disguise." When Bill Carter (Robert Pickavance) is found dead at a local New Age commune he worked with (called the Lodge of the Golden Windhorse), lying at the bottom of a staircase with a broken neck, Barnaby and Troy are unsure whether it was an accident or murder. But a few days later, the detectives are soon called back to the Lodge where there is no doubt that it is murder, when the Lodge's master, Ian Craigie, is killed whilst among the other members of the Lodge and the parents of one member, stabbed with a carving knife. The detectives find themselves puzzled as to how he was killed without anyone seeing it, and whether Carter's death was connected to the murder.

Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional wellbeing. It boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and depression, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives.

New York City

Experience New York City’s Art, Culture, and Dining

A Farmington Libraries Bus Trip

You are invited to experience art, architecture, fine dining, and more with a day trip to New York City, organized for you by the Farmington Libraries! Go on a tour of the New Whitney Museum of American Art, have lunch in the Meatpacking District, stroll on the recently completed High Line, then finish the day with a walk around Battery Park and One World Trade Center Plaza.

The bus will pick up passengers at 7:30 a.m. at Farmington’s Main Library, located at Six Monteith Drive.  The bus will return around 9:00 pm to the Library.

Upon arrival in the Meatpacking District, we will head to the Whitney for a docent tour, followed by lunch at the Museum, Serafina Meatpacking, or any other nearby restaurant. After lunch, it is time to tour the High Line with Executive Director Jay Johnston. The High Line offers an appealing view of the area surrounding Manhattan’s once raunchy Meatpacking district, now a gentrified and glorified high-living, high-fashion and high-culture Tribeca neighborhood. After the post-lunch High Line stroll, the bus will take us to Battery Park and One World Trade Center Plaza for a two-hour visit. Be ready for a 6:30 p.m. bus pickup at Battery Park for a leisurely ride home with a light dinner and beverages served on board.

The price for this 501(c)(3) fundraising excursion is $100, which includes Museum admission and a light dinner. Payment is due no later than Thursday, August 6, 2015. We will accept payment in cash or check.

To register for this trip, please contact Leah Farrell, Community Services Coordinator, via phone at 860-673-6791 x211, or via email at lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

office_dollarsign 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Fall Financial Series: Estate Planning - Don't Make these Mistakes     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

You may think that drafting an estate plan is straightforward, but in reality, if you do it wrong, you’re jeopardizing everything you’ve worked for. Just because you have a will or trust doesn’t mean you’ve covered your bases. Our presenters will share real-life stories, showing you the dangers of common estate planning mistakes such as using incorrect phrases in your documents or omitting important ones. Failing to fund or revoke a living trust, using ambiguous provisions, titling assets improperly and not updating beneficiary designations are just some of the blunders you must avoid!

Our presenters, Brendan F. Daly and Carmine Perry, are lawyers with CzepigaDalyPope LLC, a law firm specializing in estate planning and senior law.

Please register in advance for this program by calling the library at 860-673-6791, using the online registration form, or visiting the Information Services Desk.
