misc_none 6:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Monday Night Movie - Cesar Chavez     Tell a Friend

Cesar Chavez – (Spanish) Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement, Cesar Chavez tells the story of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a farm to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the world.  (2013, PG-13, 102 minutes)

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Let it Be: The Beatles, January 1969     Tell a Friend

January 1969, in which the Beatles recorded what would ultimately constitute the album Let it Be, is paradoxically both the least understood and most well-documented month of the band's entire existence. This 90-minute multimedia presentation will explain what happened during that fractious month through quotes from the band members and “fly on the wall” excerpts from the recording sessions.

One of the nation's foremost up-and-coming Beatles scholars, Aaron Krerowicz moved to Connecticut in 2010 to matriculate at the University of Hartford, graduating in 2012 with an Artist Diploma in music composition. While still a student, Aaron won a grant to research and analyze the music of the Beatles. He has presented his findings in formal lectures at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford and the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and has also presented at the University of Pensylvannia Altoona as part of their "International Beatles Conference" celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles' historic first Ed Sullivan Show broadcast. In addition, he leads many adult-level discussion courses on the band throughout Connecticut.

Sorry, Wrong Number  - (1948) Drama – Young, rich, bedridden Barbara Stanwyck dials a
telephone  number one night and overhears two men plotting the murder of an unidentified woman. She becomes frantic. Her terror is intensified by mysterious calls from an old college rival and a friend of her father. With time running out, Stanwyck pieces evidence together that leads her to suspect that it is her husband (Burt Lancaster) who wants her murdered. “Sorry, Wrong Number” is a classic, extraordinary
example of cumulative suspense and sheer terror. (88 minutes)

Between 1980 and 2000, the number of people incarcerated in the U.S. rose almost 700 percent from 300,000 to over 2 million. By 2008, more than 7 million Americans (1 out of every 31 adults) were estimated to be behind bars, on probation or on parole. In 2008, one in every 48 working-age men was in prison or jail, compared with one in 153 in 1960 and one in 156 in 1980. This explosion in the number of prisoners is attributed in major part to the war on drugs and the resulting surge in drug convictions. The irony is that the war on drugs took root at a time when illegal drug use in the U.S. was actually on the decline.

"The Justice Imperative: How Hyper-Incaceration Has Hijacked the American Dream," is an effort by several people from all walks of life who wrote a book by committee about criminal justice in Connecticut.

Back by popular demand!

The issue of when to file for Social Security may be the single most important decision retirees make in planning for their retirement. Available to everyone filing for Social Security, there are numerous little known strategies which may boost one’s benefits and substantially enhance lifetime retirement income. Social Security benefits alone will likely be insufficient for an individual or couple to retire comfortably, but decisions discussed at this workshop offer the potential to improve the standard of living we may look forward to.

The workshop offers an opportunity to learn some key concepts all social security applicants should understand before making this crucial retirement planning decision.   Please join your hosts, Michael Alimo of David Weyner of U.S.A. Financial & Tax Services for a very informative and educational event.

Love, Loss and What I Wore

Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron, based on the book by Ilene Beckerman

From the award winning writers of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and Silkwood comes the hit play, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, that just completed a hugely successful 2 ½-year New York run. The off-Broadway performances featured a stellar, rotating cast that included Tyne Daly, Rosie O’Donnell, Samantha Bee, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Lynch, Rhea Perlman, Rita Wilson, Brooke Shields, and scores more. A funny, compelling and touching tale. Women’s stories of love and loss woven together to form a masterwork. A play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Monday Night Movie - For a Woman     Tell a Friend

For a woman – (France)  In her mid-thirties, Anne still knows practically nothing of her family’s past. After her mother’s death, Anne discovers old photos and letters that convince her to take a closer look at her parents’ life after the concentration camps of World War II. Her search reveals the existence of a mysterious uncle everyone seems intent on forgetting entirely. As she closes in on a discovery she didn’t expect, her father grows ever more ill, and may take the family secret to his grave. In a journey that stretches from post-war France and to the 1980’s, Anne’s destiny intertwines with her father’s past until they form a single, unforgettable story.  (2013, 110 minutes)

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Director's College Event: Irish Women in Domestic Service     Tell a Friend

The Irish Domestic In 1800s Connecticut: Shades Of "Downton Abbey."  Faced with starvation in their native land, a multitude of brave Irish women faced the perils of an Atlantic crossing during the 1800s in the hope of becoming domestic servants in the United States. Thousands landed, lived, and worked in Connecticut, resulting in drama occasionally reminiscent of scenes from "Downton Abbey."

Neil Hogan, editor of the Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society's newsletter, "The Shanachie," will share research and stories collected as part of the Society's ongoing oral history project.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Survivors Swing Band     Tell a Friend

Back by popular demand! The Survivors Swing Band is a 7-piece ensemble made up of recent retirees and senior citizens, calling themselves the "Survivors" in acknowledgement of some of the original band members who had passed away, as well as in recognition of those beloved old melodies that remained favorites despite the passage of the decades. Come celebrate the nostalgic 1940s with hits from Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and other favorites. More information about the Survivors Swing Band can be found on their web site: http://www.survivorssb.com/

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany music series.

Please register in advance for this program by calling the library at 860-673-6791, using the online registration form, or visiting the Information Services Desk.
