APRIL'S BOOK: One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus

The story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Pianist, John Brighenti, and vocalist, Orice Jenkins, bring the songs of Nat King Cole to life in an entertaining and informative performance!

John Brighenti is a graduate of the Hartt College of Music where he studied both classical piano and music theory. After graduating, he enrolled at the Hartford Conservatory of Music to further pursue his musical studies. These studies included courses in big band arranging and jazz piano techniques. Brighenti next traveled to New York to study jazz improvisation with the world-renowned jazz pianist and composer, Lennie Tristano. Brighenti went on to tour the United States playing piano for the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Jimmy Henderson in the late 1970s. Since then he has played with the Eddie Howard, Al Gentile, and Chic Chicetti Orchestras well as Paul Landerman's Group. His venues have included the 880 Club, the Hartford Club, Foxwoods, Cavey's and Carmen Anthony's and many more. John has also performed at the Hartford Public Library's popular Baby Grand Jazz Series.

Orice Jenkins, a Hartford native, is a singer, composer and bandleader. He recorded his first two CDs while simultaneously studying classical music at the Hartt College of Music, teaching at various schools in his hometown of Hartford, and working as musical director for numerous acts in the Northeast.

From March through November 1841, Farmington, Connecticut was home to the African Mendi captives who had rebelled and overtaken the slave-ship, La Amistad. Historical interpreter Kim A. Silva will shine a light on Farmington's surprising role in the aftermath of the uprising through theater, imagery, and American Sign Language.

Farmington 1841 - When the righteous abolitionist leaders plan to supervise Cinque and his Mende warriors, trouble ensues! Abolitionists apologize for their behavior yet again. John Pitkin Norton shivers under the suspicious gaze of the Cinque, known as The Black Prince. Twenty-one-year-old Charlotte Cowles is caring for the Amistad girl, Kagne, but she also has a crush on her favorite handsome eighteen-year-old Amistad hunk. When two of their men are missing after a day of repeated assaults, the Mende march to the rescue of their own and save the lives of their abolitionist friends. Alanson Freeman, a runaway slave, and his wife, Fanny run the boarding house on Main Street. As they provide meals and support to the Amistad Africans, the couple explains the confusing and contradictory manners and laws of Cinque’s ‘Merica.

Are you a little less Y and a little more A, but can’t get enough of YA books? It’s ok, no really, it’s okay. This book group is for you! Whether you first found yourself drawn to teen books when the Hunger Games hit the big-screen or if you have been a lifelong fan, this group is for you. Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. We meet monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7PM at the Farmington Main Library. A limited number of copies of each book on the list will be available for loan at the library, or bring your own! Refreshments will be provided.

MAY'S BOOK: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. While Maya is content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world if torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire ... But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree taht bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most ... including herself.

Learn about Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and Healthcare Representatives. You may think that drafting an estate plan is straightforward, but in reality, if you do it wrong, you are jeopardizing everything you have worked for. What is the difference between a Will and a Trust? Why won't a Will be sufficient by itself? Do you need a power of attorney and what should it say? What about health care directives? Should I add my children's names to my bank accounts? We will share real-life stories showing you the dangers of common estate planning mistakes such as using incorrect phrases in your documents or omitting important ones. We’ll also spend some time talking about the probate process.

Please register.

Connecticut has the second highest cost of long-term care in the nation. So, unless you are planning to leave the state, you need to protect yourself and your retirement assets from long-term care costs. Should you give your home to your children? How can you get assistance paying for a nursing home and home care? How can single individuals and married couples qualify for Medicaid benefits while protecting their children’s inheritances? What is the 5-year look back? How can you spend down? Is long-term care insurance a good idea? If you know the rules and plan ahead, you can still protect your hard-earned assets.

Fairy House Fun

It's not too early to start collecting your Fairy House materials to build your Fairy House or Gnome Home for WINDING TRAILS NATURE'S OPEN HOUSE scheduled for the weekend of September 29th & 30th at Winding Trails. This fun event will feature author/illustrator, Tracy Kane.  You will build your Fairy Houses at home and then meet at Winding Trails on Friday, September 28th from 3:30-5:30 for installation on Library Lane.  To get you excited we have planned three (3) Fairy House fun activities at the library.

Fairy House Fun Part 1:  Make your very own fairies to live in your houses.

Fairy House Fun Part 2:  Story Walk outside and collecting natural materials.

Fairy House Fun Part 3:  Kristen's Fairy House movie, 40 minutes with popcorn

Please register for each progam invidiually.  Ages 4+ with a caregiver.

OCTOBER'S BOOK: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
