misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Classic Book Group - Foe by J.M. Coetzee     Tell a Friend

Professor Nels Highberg will lead our classic book discussion on the novel, "Foe," by J.M. Coetzee.

In "Foe," J.M. Coetzee reinvents the story of Robinson Crusoe—and in so doing, directs our attention to the seduction and tyranny of storytelling itself. In 1720 the eminent man of letters Daniel Foe is approached by Susan Barton, lately a castaway on a desert island. She wants him to tell her story, and that of the enigmatic man who has become her rescuer, companion, master and sometimes lover: Cruso. Cruso is dead, and his manservant, Friday, is incapable of speech. As she tries to relate the truth about him, the ambitious Barton cannot help turning Cruso into her invention. For as narrated by Foe—as by Coetzee himself—the stories we thought we knew acquire depths that are at once treacherous, elegant, and unexpectedly moving.

Nels Highberg holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Hartford.

Copies of the book will be available at the main library. This event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required for this program. Please call 860-673-6791, use the online link, or visit the Adult Desk.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with a tribute to Horace, the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. Dr. Jeffrey Kaimowitz will read from his translation of The Odes of Horace in both Latin and English and speak about Horace - his life and times and his influence today.

Dr. Jeffrey Kaimowitz is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and holds a PhD in classics from the University of Cincinatti. He served as the Head of the Watkinson Library and Curator of the Enders Ornithology collection at Trinity College for over thirty years, and also taught Latin as a visiting lecture in the College's Classics department. His translation of The Odes of Horace has been lauded as groundbreaking for reproducing the metric poetry in a way that maintains the style of the original while conforming to the rhythm, stress, and intonation of English speech.

The Spirit of St. Louis - Drama, 1957. On May 21, 1927 the world changed. "Lucky Lindy" landed outside Paris. And people who previously talked about the limitation of air travel suddenly dreamed of it's limitless possibilities. The Spirit of St. Louis is six-time Academy Award winner, Billy Wilder's recreation of the struggles and success of Charles A. Lindbergh, the pioneering flyboy who, like the pilots and astronauts to follow later, had the "right stuff" of aviation heroism. Starring James Stewart. 135 minutes.

Want to learn more about the Florence Griswold Museum? David Rau, the Museum's Director of Education and Outreach, will give a fun and informational presentation on the resources available at the Florence Griswold Museum. Since its beginnings in the mid 1930s, the Florence Griswold Museum has collected documents, photographs, and ephemera associated with the legacy of Florence Griswold and the artists of the Lyme Art Colony. When the Florence Griswold Association merged with the newly formed Lyme Historical Society in 1955, the mission of the institution broadened to incorporate local history from the town’s original settlement in the 17th century to the present day.

Once you see all the treasures this Old Lyme museum has to offer, you will want to rush out and borrow the library's museum pass to see them in person!

Americans, on average, eat over 150 pounds of sugar each year, which is a ten-fold increase over the last hundred years! Two-thirds of us are overweight and one-third of us are obese. By 2030, forty-two percent of us will be obese, according to Body Mass Index (BMI) standards. Increased sugar intake has been linked to an increase in Type 2 diabetes. Excessive dietary sugar has also been associated with Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, as well as coronary artery disease.

Continued weight gain has led to “Metabolic Syndrome” with is associated high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and various other health problems. During this presentation, Dr. Horen will focus on addressing these problems through nutritional changes and dietary intake.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM A Collection’s Progress: The Lewis Walpole Library 2000-2014     Tell a Friend

The Lewis Walpole Library will host a special showing of its current exhibition, A Collection’s Progress: The Lewis Walpole Library, 2000-2014, complete with a lecture from exhibition curator, Margaret Powell. This event is co-sponsored by the Farmington Libraries and the Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University, and will take place at the Lewis Walpole Library at 154 Main Street, Farmington, at 7:00 p.m.

When Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis left his library to Yale in 1979 Lewis thought of his gift not as a finished monument but as a living thing that required growth and change lest it become, in his words, “static and moldy.”  The exhibition presents materials selected from the LWL’s collecting successes of the last fourteen years. Together the objects on display argue forcefully for the Library’s conquest of stasis and mold, and each speaks eloquently of another time, its politics and conflicts, its arts, fashions, and pastimes.

Seating is limited for this event; please register in advance by calling 860-673-6791, using the online link, or visiting the Farmington Main Library's Adult Desk.

        There are 25 spaces available.
