Michael binder, one of the premier college consultants on Long Island will be at the Library to discuss how 9th, 10th, & 11th graders can maximize their admissions and scholarship potential.  He will outline the key steps a student must take to guarantee that his/her application stands out in the applicant pool.  And, he will give hints in how to determine which colleges are truly the best choice for you. Registration begins September 16, 2015.  This program is for Young Adults and their parents.

Georgette Basso R.N. and Joanne Tanck R.N. of the neonatal unit at Winthrop University Hospital will return to the Garden City Library to conduct a Babysitting Workshop for Young Adults in Grades 6-12.  The scope of their program will include basic first aid, feeding, diapering, developmental characteristics, safely finding customers among other topics.  Please bring a baby sized doll or stuffed animal to this session to practice.  Registration begins September 22, 2015.

Steve Espey of Garden City Recreation Department and Detective Richard Pedone of the Youth Bureau of the Garden City Police Department will be at the library to facilitate the second part of the Babysitting Workshop.  Their focus is on safety - the precautions one must take to ensure the safety of you, the babysitter and the safety of those you are caring for.  This program is open to Young Adults in grades 6-12.  Registration begins on September 22, 2015.  Registration for one session places the participant in both sessions.  Confirmation email may reflect the one session but it covers both.

Come and join the founder and Director of the Not-For-Prifit Long Island Funding for Education (L.I.F.E) as he discusses methods to maximize your family's eligibility for college financial aid.  Simply because a student understands the rules and recognizes how to use them (s)he may qualify for $1,000's in financial aid.  To be addressed at this seminar:

  • Financial strategies to enhance eligibility
  • techniques to boost college savings
  • finding scholarships

Kaplan testing Services will administer an exam with sections of the SAT and sections of the ACT exam.  Test takers will then be able to make an educated decision as to which test is better for them.  The results will be presented to students and parents the following week.  Registration begins October 3, 2015 through Event Keeper.  Open to students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades

Connell Boyle Regional Director of kaplan Test Prep will return with the results of the exams given on October 24, 2015.  He will analyse strengths and weaknesses of each section and recommend strategies for improvement.  Registration is linked to test registration.  It is encouraged that an parent/guardian accompany the student to this session.

Barry fox will return to give a workshop on the Financial Aid process.  He will answer the questions of who, when, why and how to file for financial aid, and how to work with the financial aid offices at the colleges of your choice.  If there is an interest he will talk about adults entering college and what financial aid is available for them and if they qualify.  Program is open to High School students and their parents.  Registration begins October 28, 2015.

Library Arts, Doris Benter will be at the library to work with YAs in making a sculpture from mixed media of a snowman on the beach.  Students will use Air-dry clay, Model Magic to create this sunny bathing snowman. Limited to 20 YAs.  This is a Yung Adult Program.  Registration begins December 30, 2015
