Doll Bones by Holly Black

Zach, Poppy, and Alice have been friends forever.  And for almost as long, they’ve been playing one continuous, ever-changing game of pirates and thieves, mermaids and warriors.  Ruling over all is the Great Queen, a bone-china doll cursing those who displease her.  But they are in middle school now.  Their friendship might be over, until Poppy declares she’s been having dreams about the Queen—and the ghost of a girl who will not rest until the bone-china doll is buried in her empty grave.

The three friends set off on one last adventure to lay the Queen’s ghost to rest.  But nothing goes according to plan, and as their adventure turns into an epic journey, creepy things begin to happen.  Is the doll just a doll or something more sinister?  And if there really is a ghost, will it let them go now that it has them in its clutches?  Read this book and join us for a great discussion.  Copies of the book are available at the Teen Services Desk.

An Italian Wife, by Ann Hood, Presented by Marissa Lee Damiano & Amy Mondello
Bring your book, beach chair and snacks and join us for our second annual book discussion at Pryibil Beach!  We’ll be discussing Ann Hood’s poignant novel, An Italian Wife.
Italian immigrant Josephine Rimaldi’s joys, sorrows and passions span more than seven decades as she watches her six children grow up, all while secretly searching for her seventh - the product of a love affair who was given up for adoption.  From turn of the century Italy to the psychedelic 1970s in America, author Ann Hood illuminates important truths about the ways in which our families, our ancestry and the era in which we are born shape who we become.  We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a lively discussion.   Please ask for your copy at the Reference desk.

Selma
127 min. (PG-13) 2014
The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director DuVernay's Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
