Yamin Levy’s ambitious debut novel explores the inner world of warriors, reluctant soldiers, zealots and freedom fighters. He gives voice to a range of perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the beginnings of nationalism, and Israeli society’s evolving attitudes regarding their physical, spiritual and existential survival.

Rabbi Yamin Levy spent 22 years in the rabbinate in three communities: Highland Park, NJ, Seattle, WA and Great Neck, NY. He is the author of the nationally acclaimed Confronting the Loss of a Baby: A Personal and Halakhic Perspective and Journey Through Grief: A Sephardic Manual for the Bereaved and Their Community. Rabbi Levy is senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth Hadassah, Iranian Jewish Center in Great Neck / Kings Point. He teaches at Shalhevet High School for Girls in the Five Towns. He is also the Rabbi of the Long Island Hebrew Academy in Great Neck.

Rabbi Levy will sign books available for purchase at the program.

Program will be held at Temple Emanuel - 150 Hicks Ln, Great Neck, NY 11024

Ballet Long Island presents Peter & The Wolf as a complete ballet with costumes, scenery and everything needed to give audiences a wonderful experience.  Performed with a narrator, the musical work serves as an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra as well as the basis of a delightful ballet. Each character in the story is personified by its own instruments and melody.

For K - 6th graders

Tickets will be available Thursday, February 9 at 8:00pm at the Main, Station and Parkville branches and Friday, February 10 at 9:00am at the Lakeville branch.  Maximum of 5 tickets for each family with proof of current library card status.

SAT or ACT Practice Test
Sunday, February 12, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Curvebreakers will administer a fully timed and proctored SAT or ACT exam, just like the real exam.  Teens will choose which test they want to take when they register in advance.  The practice exam will help students get a feel for the timing and stamina required for the real exam.  Each student will get back the graded exam with scoring information and customized comments written by Nick LaPoma, Curvebreakers founder and master tutor.

SAT or ACT Practice Test Score Results
Monday, February 27, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  
Nick will hand back the exams, explain the scores and how to analyze them.  He will advise parents and students on how to choose between the SAT and the ACT.  Parents are encouraged to attend the results session.

For teens in grades 9 and above.  Advanced registration is required and starts on Friday, February 3 at 10:00 am.  Teen’s own library card is required for registration.  Teens who take the practice test are automatically registered for the score results session.

English Language Conversation for Beginners

The Library invites all new speakers of English to join our English Language Conversation Group. English Language Conversation meetings will be held at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd floor), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, now on every Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

These are small, informal groups of people that get together to have conversations in English. Various conversation topics may be chosen. This class stresses basic grammar and spoken language, including vocabulary guided by audio-visual guides.

For further information, please call the Reference Dept. at (516) 466-8055, ext. 218.  Groups are facilitated by Librarian Barbara Buckley.

Beginners are encouraged to stay for the second class.

English Language Conversation meetings 2nd level will be held at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd floor), Gardens at Great Neck Shopping Center, now on every Tuesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
