rec_games 1:30 PM  -  3:00 PM Teen Game Day: Telestrations Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Allison Cusher     cushera@graftonlibrary.org

Telestrations is the visual version of the classic "telephone game" where you draw what you see, then guess what you saw to reveal hilarious outcomes! No drawing skills required! If it's nice we'll play outside.

How do you play? Each player starts with their own erasable sketch book, marker, and word card. A roll of the die determines each player's secret word. The time gets turned and everyone draws their word. After 60 seconds, everyone passes their book to the player on their left. Then each player takes a few seconds  to guess in word(s) what they see, and passes again. The timer is turned and everyone draws the guess. This continutes until everyone's sketch book passes by every player and returns back to its original orwer, where it's time for the Big Reveal. Everyone shares their book and the hilarious miscommunication is revealed.

This free program is for teens in grades 6-12 and is limited to 12 participants. Each participant will earn 3 tickets for our end of summer prizes. Additionally one lucky winner will go home with a free book.

rec_games 1:30 PM  -  3:00 PM Teen Game Day: Superfight Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Superfight is a game where you argue with your friends over ridiculous fights. The game is very simple. It's fun for all levels and kinds of players. The main deck consists of 500 cards, split between character cards (white cards), and powers and weaknesses (black cards). These cards are used to create fights like this: A kindergarten class that breathes fire and is wearing jetpacks vs. a pirate swinging a shark on a chain and riding a Segway. As you can imagine, the arguements over who would win the fight are epic and hilarious. We'll even mix things up with using bonus decks. If the weather's nice we'll play outside.

    Contact: Beth Gallaway   508-839-4649   graftonlibrary.ma@gmail.com

Join us at the Lions Club field at twilight for songs, storytelling, and s'mores! After dark, you are invited to stay and scan the skies for shooting stars that will occur as part of this year's Perseid meteor showers. The Library's telescope will also be available for use.

This event is weather permitting and will be CANCELLED in event of rain. If the weather is cloudy, we will hold the first part of the program from 7-9mm.

Made of tiny space debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, the Perseids are named after the constellation Perseus. This is because the direction, or radiant, from which the shower seems to come in the sky lies in the same direction as the constellation Perseus, which can be found in the north-eastern part of the sky.

While the skies light up several time a year by other meteor showers , the Perseids are widely sought after by astronomers and stargazers. This is because at its peak, one can see 60 to a 100 meteors in an hour from a dark place. This year, a waxing gibbous Moon will make it harder for observers to watch the meteor shower, but we are hopeful we'll see something!

Attendees will earn 3 tickets to our end of summer raffle.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Reads Well With Others Book Group Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Reads Well With Others Book Group meets to discuss Crimson Shore by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

Description: A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated--and sinister--than Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton. Pendergast and Constance soon learn that Exmouth is a town with a very dark and troubled history, and this skeleton may be only the first hint of an ancient transgression, kept secret all these years. But they will discover that the sins of the past are still very much alive. Local legend holds that during the 1692 witch trials in Salem, the real witches escaped, fleeing north to Exmouth and settling deep in the surrounding salt marshes, where they continued to practice their wicked arts. Then, a murdered corpse turns up in the marshes. The only clue is a series of mysterious carvings. Could these demonic symbols bear some relation to the ancient witches' colony, long believed to be abandoned? A terrible evil lurks beneath the surface of this sleepy seaside town--one with deep roots in Exmouth's grim history. And it may be that Constance, with her own troubled past, is the only one who truly comprehends the awful danger that she, Pendergast, and the residents of Exmouth must face.

In this new, highly researched two-hour workshop, participants have fun producing their own still life pastel paintings. Teacher, Gregory Maichack is a seasoned pro at teaching pastel techniques, as recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston; Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and hundreds of libraries and local cultural councils. Maichack demonstrates how beginners to accomplished artists can paint a still life while applying techniques applied by masters such as van Gogh, O’Keeffe, Monet & Maichack himself.

The still life is a genre chosen by famous artists throughout history as a subject. Participants benefit from the techniques culled from these masters as reflected in their individual painting approaches in historical context. As always, all will keep their pastel paintings and use hundreds of his professional-grade pastels, paper, and materials, all supplied.

        There are 9 spaces available.

Help us celebrate our 150th anniversary all year with this kickoff event! The original lending library opened January 28, 1867, and books began circulating April 24, 1867. The Library was housed in a room at Warren Block, now known as the Grafton Townhouse at One Grafton Common. The collection of over 5,000 books soon exceeded its allotted space, and the Library was relocated from the Clerk’s office to Lower Town Hall, where it remained at One Grafton Common for 43 years.
