The Grafton Public Library Trustees are kicking-off a capital campaign initiative to help support fundraising efforts to renovate and improve the Library with a special anniversary celebration in honor of the circa 1927 built library to be held in June 2017. The Gala Planning Committee meets Wed Oct 5 at 7 pm in Conference Room E at the Municipal Center. The Public is invited to attend, and more volunteers are needed to help!

On Wed Sept 7, members of several Grafton-based community groups met to brainstorm different ways to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Library. Individuals representing Apple Tree Arts, Friends of the Grafton Public Library, Grafton Community Television, Grafton Historical Society, Grafton Lions Club, Grafton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Association, South Grafton PTO, Unitarian Universalist Society of Grafton and Upton and Willard House and Clock Museum shared their ideas of potential fun events and activities to be offered. Diane Libbey, co-chair of the GPL Trustees encouraged participants think about the Library in terms of “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”

Attendees discussed creating a variety of activities to appeal to all ages and to offer something of interest to all Grafton residents. Some of the suggestions included a grand gala celebration party to be held on the Grafton Common, a costume parade for young children, a scavenger hunt on Grafton Land Trust properties, a historical walking tour around the common with historical interpreters and an antique car show with a focus on cars of the 1927-30s era. Other ideas included presenting a dramatization about Jerome Wheelock, the local inventor who gave the town the funds to build the library, creating a haunted walking tour and offering a program or tour of the Grafton Historical Society’s museum. Participants also recommended using the local churches on the common to hold events.

Library supporters are working on developing a 501 (c) 3 organization to support the renovation and improvement of the Library. The celebration proceeds will support this initiative. The Planning Committee will be meeting again next month on Oct.5 in Room E of the Grafton Memorial Municipal Center, 30 Providence Road. Everyone is welcomed to attend and share their ideas on ways to celebrate the library’s anniversary and to help organize the events. Please contact Beth Patch at patchb@graftonlibrary.org for more information.

In this new, highly researched two-hour workshop, participants have fun producing their own still life pastel paintings. Teacher, Gregory Maichack is a seasoned pro at teaching pastel techniques, as recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston; Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and hundreds of libraries and local cultural councils. Maichack demonstrates how beginners to accomplished artists can paint a still life while applying techniques applied by masters such as van Gogh, O’Keeffe, Monet & Maichack himself.

The still life is a genre chosen by famous artists throughout history as a subject. Participants benefit from the techniques culled from these masters as reflected in their individual painting approaches in historical context. As always, all will keep their pastel paintings and use hundreds of his professional-grade pastels, paper, and materials, all supplied.

Help us celebrate our 150th anniversary all year with this kickoff event! The original lending library opened January 28, 1867, and books began circulating April 24, 1867. The Library was housed in a room at Warren Block, now known as the Grafton Townhouse at One Grafton Common. The collection of over 5,000 books soon exceeded its allotted space, and the Library was relocated from the Clerk’s office to Lower Town Hall, where it remained at One Grafton Common for 43 years.
