misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Author Talk: Douglas Selwyn -- All Children Are All Our Children Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

What would schools and communities look like if the health and well-being of all our children were our highest priorities? More important than test scores, profits, or real estate values? What actions would we take if we wanted to guarantee that all our children were growing up with what they needed to be healthy, happy, and successful—and not just some of them?

The United States was once among the healthiest countries in the world. As of now, it is ranked no better than twenty-ninth. Those who bear the brunt of our worsening health are the poor, people of color, and, most of all, our children. All Children Are All Our Children situates our ongoing health crisis within the larger picture of inequality and the complex interplay of systems in the U.S. based on class, privilege, racism, sexism, and the ongoing tension between the ideals of democracy and the realities of corporate capitalism. Public education is caught in the middle of those tensions.

All Children Are All Our Children begins by defining what we mean by health, looking at the many factors that support or undermine it and then identifies steps that can be taken locally in our schools and in our communities that can support the health and well-being of our young people and their families, even as we work towards necessary change at the state and national policy level.

Doug Selwyn has been an educator for more than thirty years, the first half as a teacher in K–12 in the Seattle Public Schools and the second half in teacher education, first at Antioch University, Seattle and then for ten years as a professor of education at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh until his retirement in 2017. He received his doctorate from Seattle University in 1991 and was named Washington State social studies teacher of the year in 1990–91. He has published several books on education, most recently Following the reads (Peter Lang, 2009). He lives in Greenfield, Massachusetts, with his wife, writer Jan Maher.

misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  7:00 PM Swipe Left on Your Inner Critic: 5 Techniques for Quieting the Voice of Unhelpful Judgment Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Is there a voice inside your head that sometimes tells you that you’re not good enough? It might also give you other negative messages like, “That idea is no good.” “Don’t say that because people will think you’re foolish.” “Who are you to think you can do that?” Professional improv comedian and author Pam Victor calls that voice the Evil Mind Meanie; it’s the internal voice of unhelpful judgment that’s frequently in our heads telling us that we’re doing it wrong...plus a whole buffet full of other judgmental and negative messages that keep us from tapping into our most creative, productive, authentic selves. Through wise and wise-cracking stories and easy-to-do, fun interactive exercises, Pam provides practical and immediately-applicable techniques for “swiping left” - disempowering - the inner critic, so you can better reach your full potential and live with more joy and ease. So ask yourself this: “How would your life change if you stopped listening to the internal voice of unhelpful judgment?” In this presentation, you can find out ... and laugh a lot in the process too!

Pam Victor is a professional improviser, facilitator, author, teacher, and the Head of Happiness (aka Founder and President) of Happier Valley Comedy, the first improv theater and training center in Western Massachusetts. In service to HVC’s mission to bring more laughter, joy, and ease to the world, Pam directs the three branches of the company: the comedy training center, regular shows, and the THROUGH LAUGHTER program for professional and personal development, which uses improv training exercises to build foundational training skills, such as communication, collaboration, and creativity.  Pam is the author of “Baj and the Word Launcher: A Space-Aged Asperger Adventure in Communication” a children’s book that uses sci-fi to teach social and communication skills. Along with legendary improvisers TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi, Pam is the co-author of “Improvisation at the Speed of Life: The TJ & Dave Book.” Pam currently is working on her next book “Jumping into the Unknown & Catching Your Friends: A Zen of Improv Companion Book.” A graduate of Smith College with a Master’s in Education from Iona College, Pam has received improv training from iO Theater (Chicago), Annoyance Theatre (Chicago), ImprovBoston, and from Second City teachers.  Pam is a nice person. She likes you already.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Greenfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.  It is also supported by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library.

Participants will learn about upcycling plastic bags through the process of fusing.  Using the heat and pressure of a household iron, a new type of textile is formed from un-recyclable plastic bags and wrappers that would usually be thrown away. This 101 class teaches the basics of plastic bag fusing and each participant will complete a final project using the fused textile. When signing up participants should start to save up their household's cereal and cracker bags and any other plastic bags and wrappers and bring them to use or donate. Guidelines for what can be used are found on Lou's website: http://www.lousupcycles.com/donate-recycle-upcycle/

There is a limit of 15 participants for this free workshop, which is supported in part by a grant from the Greenfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass
Cultural Council, a state agency.

When Led Zeppelin II replaced Abbey Road as the #1 album in December of 1969, it symbolized a "passing of the torch" into a new era in popular music. This 60-minute multimedia presentation
observes how 1960s rock bands The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds paved the way for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s.

Despite being born fifteen years after the band broke up, Aaron Krerowicz worked as a full-time independent professional Beatles scholar from June 2015 through August 2018. He has authored six books about The Beatles, and delivered more than 500 presentations throughout the US, England, and Canada. In addition to the Beatles, Aaron talks about other musical groups, Star Wars and its music, the history of baseball, and origami. For more information, visit his website: AaronKrerowicz.com.

Join the happy circle with Kay Lyons at a lap-sit story hour for children age 3 and under (with a grown-up!) every Friday morning at the GPL.  Children's Librarian Kay Lyons reads books, leads the group in hand rhymes, and uses puppets to teach animal sounds and other concepts to the very young.  Children and grown-ups shake rattles, tap rhythm sticks, wave colored scarves, ring bells, and do knee bounces to simple sing-along tunes that everyone learns together.

Go on the loose with Mother Goose!  It's so much fun!  Each session is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of structured activity and 15 minutes of visiting time.  No sign-up is required and the program is free of charge, thanks to the Friends of the GPL.
