misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Ask a Muslim Anything Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Robert Azzi is a photojournalist, columnist and public speaker who lives in Exeter NH. An Arab American Muslim, he writes on issues of Identity, Conflict, and Islam, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South.  Born in New Hampshire, he’s lived in Beirut, Cairo, Athens, Jeddah and New York. Although he returned to the Granite State in the late 1980s, he continues to travel to visit and work in the Middle East.

As a photojournalist his work appeared frequently in such publications as Life, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Fortune and other domestic and international publications.

At Phillips Exeter Academy he once served as advisor to the Middle East Society and to the Muslim Student Association (MSA). During the 1990s war in the former Yugoslavia, Azzi initiated a project that brought 85 students from Bosnia-Herzegovina to live with American families, empowering them to continue their education until it was safe to return home.

Today, Azzi is a columnist whose work appears (almost) weekly in The Concord Monitor, Foster’s Daily Democrat (Dover), and The Portsmouth Herald – where he attempts to contextualize, for an “Outside-the-Beltway” audience, Islam and the Middle East by speaking in the voice of The Other.

“People don’t know what they don’t know,” Azzi tells his audience. “I want to open up new perspectives for my readers – especially for those who don’t often agree with me – and expose them to points-of-view  I believe are important and which they might not have previously considered.”

Azzi is frequently invited to speak to schools, libraries and civic and religious groups; invitations he welcomes in order to encourage tolerance, understanding and interfaith dialogue and he remains available to mentor students and teachers of issues related to the Middle East and Islam.

One popular program is an event devoted to “Ask a Muslim Anything,” where Azzi welcomes questions on Islam, on being Muslim, on issues related to terrorism and on the geopolitics of the Middle East as he has experienced and understands them.  Nothing is off the table – each program lasts approximately two hours!

He is also a regular participant in several interfaith dialogue groups that meet on a regular basis in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He often consults on education and political issues as they relate to Islam and the Middle East.

misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM First Wednesday Speaker Series: The Design and Construction of Windsor Chairs Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Following an inspirational trip to Colonial Williamsburg, Patrick Perkins built his first Windsor chair in the early 1980s. He has since built many Windsor chairs in several different styles using the same techniques and tools used in the construction of Windsor chairs throughout the 18th century.

Join Patrick as he shares his knowledge and experience designing and building Windsor chairs. During his presentation, Patrick will describe the types of wood used in chair construction and how wood is taken directly from logs and fashioned into finished chair parts. Patrick will also share examples of the antique-style tools used in chair construction and how milk paint and oil are combined to produce a durable finish.

The First Wednesday Speaker Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library.

In this facilitated workshop, we will share our love for journal writing--swapping ideas for types of content and methods of tracking, etc. Novices are welcome.

First time around the circle, we will say where we are from and why we are at this workshop.
Second time around the circle we will answer: Why do you journal? What kinds of things do you write about? Any special methods used?
After these two go arounds, I will list the many types of journals, and go over some unique pointers on how to do journaling: from handwriting vs computer, to choice of notebook and pen, as well as time to spend, periodicity, and setting. In addition, you'll learn how to set up a table of contents and use page numbering with headings and "keys" to be able to track patterns and find items easily in your journal.

We will have a voluntary writing session with prompts, and self-feedback. After this, we will voluntary share what we wrote.

misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Local Author Talk -- Karen Zilberstein Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Northampton author and psychotherapist Karen Zilberstein will do a reading from her new book, Parents Under Pressure: Struggling to Raise Children in an Unequal America.

Through the unforgettable portraits of six overburdened families, Parents Under Pressure shows how health crises can quickly devolve into the loss of jobs and homes, how public perceptions of poor people hamper the chances for a better life and the ways in which race and income affect access to assistance. Judged by family, friends and professionals who question their abilities and choices, parents feel inadequate and drained, rather than supported.

Karen Zilberstein, LICSW, is a practicing psychotherapist and Clinical Director of the Northampton, MA chapter of A Home Within, a national nonprofit that provides pro bono psychotherapy for individuals who have experienced foster care. She worked as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Smith College School for Social Work for 12 years, where she taught and coordinated the Child Development Team. She has co-authored a children’s book entitled Calming Stormy Feelings: A Child’s Introduction to Psychotherapy and published numerous journal articles on child therapy, parenting interventions, the treatment of foster and adopted children, and the clinical implications of attachment and complex trauma in children.

Join the happy circle with Kay Lyons at a lap-sit story hour for children age 3 and under (with a grown-up!) every Friday morning at the GPL.  Children's Librarian Kay Lyons reads books, leads the group in hand rhymes, and uses puppets to teach animal sounds and other concepts to the very young.  Children and grown-ups shake rattles, tap rhythm sticks, wave colored scarves, ring bells, and do knee bounces to simple sing-along tunes that everyone learns together.

Go on the loose with Mother Goose!  It's so much fun!  Each session is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of structured activity and 15 minutes of visiting time.  No sign-up is required and the program is free of charge, thanks to the Friends of the GPL.

Let's celebrate spring by reading poems together with friends and neighbors with Slate Roof managing editor Janet MacFadyen and Greenfield poet Mary Clare Powell.

Bring a poem you love, or one that you have questions about! We'll provide a selection of poems as well.

All levels are welcome to an afternoon of relaxed discussion and appreciation, from those who already love poetry to those who have felt shut out. There is no right or wrong response to a poem. This event is an outgrowth of the Massachusetts Poetry Common Threads project, bringing people together to read and talk about poetry from all perspectives and levels.

misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Aaron Krerowicz: Stairway to Zeppelin Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

When Led Zeppelin II replaced Abbey Road as the #1 album in December of 1969, it symbolized a "passing of the torch" into a new era in popular music. This 60-minute multimedia presentation
observes how 1960s rock bands The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds paved the way for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s.

Despite being born fifteen years after the band broke up, Aaron Krerowicz worked as a full-time independent professional Beatles scholar from June 2015 through August 2018. He has authored six books about The Beatles, and delivered more than 500 presentations throughout the US, England, and Canada. In addition to the Beatles, Aaron talks about other musical groups, Star Wars and its music, the history of baseball, and origami. For more information, visit his website: AaronKrerowicz.com.

misc_none.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM First Wednesday Speaker Series -- Voices From Inside Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Voices from Inside (VFI) runs writing groups for currently or formerly incarcerated women. Through creative writing workshops and public readings, VFI empowers women who have been incarcerated to make changes in their lives and to engage positively with the communities to which they return.

Founded in 1999 and located in Western Massachusetts, VFI currently runs four groups for women: in a medium-security jail, its pre-release program, a correctional substance abuse treatment facility, and in the community for women who have been recently released. Each group is led by two facilitators who have been trained in the Amherst Writers & Artists method of facilitating writing groups with people from under-served populations. Several graduates of VFI workshops have also been trained and are active in the program.

This program, sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library, is free and open to the public.
