misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Advance Care Planning with Lisa Ahbel -- Session 2 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This workshop is for everyone, whether you have questions about your own healthcare planning or regarding your aging loved ones.  Please note:  You may have a Living Will, but did you know they are no longer legally binding in Massachusetts?  Come learn what you can now do to ensure your wishes will be known and honored at the end of your life.

In two sequential sessions, we will explore the basics of advance care planning.  In session 1, we will discuss Health Care Proxy/Healthcare Power of Attorney.  In session 2, we will use the Massachusetts MOLST (Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) form as a springboard for discussing various ethical, medical, and practical choices at end of life.  While these two sessions are designed to be taken together, they are also stand-alone workshops, and participants may choose to attend just one or the other.

Session 2:  Understanding the MOLST form:  What does "full code" mean?  What is the definition of palliative and hospice care?  Discussion of special issues for dementia patients at end of life.

Lisa Ahbel, RN has years of experience in hospice and long-term care which informs her special interest and unique perspective on end-of-life issues.  She is passionate about educating, advising, and supporting familes who are responsible for healthcare decision-making on behalf of elder loved ones, with the goal of helping patients to live well until the very end of their lives.

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM The Quest for the Eastern Cougar: Extinction or Survival? Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Shawn

Everyone knows someone who has a cougar or mountain lion sighting story. These beautiful cats once roamed free all across the Northeast. Supposedly, they have been gone from our area for decades.

Wildlife officials insist that they do not exist.  In fact, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially declared the species extinct here.  If they are extinct, how do we explain the 140 pound male cougar that was struck and killed in Milford, Connecticut last year?  Why do so many people see them?  Robert Tougias will answer these question and discuss the future of the large carnivore here in New England.

Robert Tougias is a nature author who has been studying the eastern cougar story for two decades.  He is the author of Birding Western Massachusetts - a Habitat Approach (New England Cartographics) and presently has a column appearing in the New London Day newspaper.  Robert's interest in the cougar began when he discovered large cat tracks near his family's cabin in northern Vermont.

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Civil War Hijinks with Judy Cook Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

On June 11 at 6pm, the Greenfield Public Library is excited to host Judy Cook and her Civil War Hijinks program. Civil War Hijinks features the letters of Judy’s great-great-grandparents: Gilbert Claflin, a Wisconsin farmer drafted at the age of 40; and his wife, Esther, keeping the farm going with their two teen-aged sons. Interspersed throughout the program Judy will play tunes and sing songs written during the Civil War. The themes are timeless: joy and sorrow, humor, courage and love. Letters, images, and music combine to provide fascinating insight into camp and home life in Middle America of the 1860's, and the audience is transported to the time of the Civil War in a very personal, eye-witness experience.

Judy Cook performs each year throughout the United States and Britain. She is recognized for her depth of understanding and storytelling ability in ballad form, her dedication to the music and her willingness to do her research. Judy has one book and four CDs. The two most recent CDs are "Tenting Tonight: Songs of the Civil War” and “Lincoln’s America”. Her first book, A Quiet Corner of the War, presents the Civil War letters of her great-great grandparents with extensive notes and research; it is published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library.

misc_none 10:00 AM  -  11:30 AM The Thursday Morning Club: I Was Paid to Read with Hazel Dawkins Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Thursday Morning Club is a new series offered by the Greenfield Public Library.  Free and open to the public, it will feature a variety of different speakers, including local authors.  All are welcome to attend.  Our inaugural event will feature Hazel Dawkins talking about her books.

"I was paid to read," Hazel Dawkins explains. She worked in New York first for the publishing company HarperCollins, then for Columbia University Press. Later, she was an editor for Chilton in Pennsylvania.  Bill Dufty's Sugar Blues and Menopause, A Positive Approach by Rosetta Reitz are her favorites of the titles she edited although the first Dick Francis mystery to be published in the US was the book that paved the way to Dawkins writing the Dr. Yoko mysteries. When her boss at Harper's dropped the galleys of the Dick Francis book on her desk, Dawkins said, "I don't read mysteries."

"Now you do," her boss said. That title, Dead Cert, was the first of the Francis books to be published in the U.S. and Dawkins made sure she read all the following books by Francis.

While working at HarperCollins, Dawkins was one of the few on staff who regularly visited a room at the top of the building (Harpers was on E 33rd St. at that time). The room held copies of all the titles the company had published up to then. An avid reader, Dawkins worked her way through those book, from Mark Twain, the Bronte sisters, Thackeray and H. G. Wells (an old favorite).

John Ford, Poet in the Desert, by Joseph Malham, Endless Journey by Dr. Janet Stumbo and Molly Campbell's Characters in Search of a Novel (Molly is a 2-time Erma Bombeck award-winning writer) are among recent titles she has edited.

Dawkins has authored factual as well as fictional books. Eye Sleuth is the first title in her Dr. Yoko series. Next is Eye Witness (co-authored with Dennis Berry). The third, Eye Sleuth's Ghostly Vacations, is an e-novella but will be a paperback in September 2018. The fourth Dr. Yoko mystery is Eyes on the Past.  Factual books includeThe Suddenly Successful Student & Friends and Focus Your Mind's Eye.

An editor-writer who has worked in London, Paris and New York, Dawkins now lives in bucolic western Massachusetts

Join librarians Diane Holmes and Lisa Prolman for lively discussions of Jane Austen's six published novels.  Sessions will be held every other month on Thursday evenings.

Although one of the last published, Northanger Abbey was Austen's first written novel, started when she was in her twenties but held up by the publisher who bought the copyright for ten pounds and left it to languish.  Austen's satire of the Gothic novels of the time wasn't published until after her death.  To honor its place as first written, we will start our discussion series with it.
