Build Your Own Bento: Japanese Lunchboxes for Kids!
Contact: Adaena Tray 412-921-9292 greentree@einetwork.net
Bento boxes are not only cute and convenient Japanese meals on the go, they are also a way for kids to eat healthier. These compartmentalized, Asian lunchboxes turn an ordinary midday meal into an artform. What seven-year-old could say no to a hardboiled egg when it's shaped like a bunny or a tomato when it has a smiley face?
In this program, each parent/child duo will receive a bento box and food to fill it! We'll experiment with different techniques to make your school lunch stand out from the rest. At the end, we'll eat our creations!
This program is open to students in grades 1-5. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A wide variety of ingredients, including standard lunch fare like sandwiches, fruits and veggies, will be available for making bentos, so please keep this in mind if your child has food allergies.
To participate, please sign up in advance at the library's front desk. There is a non-refundable supplies fee of $7, which includes instruction, use of equipment, food and one bento box. Payment is due at the time of registration. Space is limited to 20 children.

Learn your ABCs at the library! Each of our preschool storytimes will be devoted to a different letter of the alphabet. A is for aliens, B is for boats...you get the picture! Retired school teacher Marcia will be our reader leader; each week, she'll share stories and pictures to reinforce important concepts and prepare your child for kindergarten. Afterwards, kids can complete a make 'n take craft upstairs in the Poplar Room and then head over to the gymnasium for open gym time. This program is recommended for ages 3 through 5. One Book, One Community Book Discussion
Contact: Adaena Tray 412-921-9292 greentree@einetwork.net
The Allegheny County Library Association is pleased to announce the 8th annual One Book, One Community program. One Book programs are bringing communities together for stimulating discussions, and to challenge stereotypes and generate ideas. The goal of One Book, One Community in Allegheny County is to build a better community through reading and civic discourse.
This year's selection is A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryons. All are welcome to attend this discussion and no registration is required. For more information contact the Green Tree Library at (412) 921.9292.
From Publisher's Weekly: Returning to the U.S. after 20 years in England, Iowa native Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail. Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he nevertheless plunges into the wilderness and emerges with a consistently comical account of a neophyte woodsman learning hard lessons about self-reliance. Bryson (The Lost Continent) carries himself in an irresistibly bewildered manner, accepting each new calamity with wonder and hilarity. He reviews the characters of the AT (as the trail is called), from a pack of incompetent Boy Scouts to a perpetually lost geezer named Chicken John. Most amusing is his cranky, crude and inestimable companion, Katz, a reformed substance abuser who once had single-handedly "become, in effect, Iowa's drug culture." The uneasy but always entertaining relationship between Bryson and Katz keeps their walk interesting, even during the flat stretches. Bryson completes the trail as planned, and he records the misadventure with insight and elegance.
