Every month paintings, photography, sculpture and other creative crafts are displayed in the Helen Gould Room located directly off the main foyer, and in the Lower Lobby display cases. 

Heroines: Living Women Making a Difference in Our World, presented by artist Judith Lepore-Schreiber, showcases how frequently women have been the difference-makers in our culture. She has exhibited at the Paterson Museum, Columbia University, and many galleries in New York City. There will be an Artist Reception in The Helen Gould Room on Sunday, May 7 from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Ages 3 – 5, independent.  Transforming learning and play into an art that educates the whole child, this program will instill mindful techniques in preschoolers through age-appropriate meditation, yoga and amazing play. Learning opportunities presented through alternative educational philosophies will provide a basis for developing literacy skills, socialization and self-esteem.  This program will also serve as an outlet for creativity through nature-inspired art and craft work.  Limit of 15 children.  Limit of 15. Join Susan Semerade for guided stretches, exercises and simple yoga poses, primarily seated in a chair. This fun-filled hour includes breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and meditation. 20 years of teaching yoga has led her to focus on those individuals who are not able to get down onto the floor; she encourages seniors and the disabled to come to her classes.

Emphasis is on alignment and breathing, and improved coordination and balance. The key to mat Pilates is to focus on breathing. The exercises in mat Pilates focus on strengthening the muscles of the hips, back, abdominals, and glutes.

Local Artist Maureen Travers will display her landscapes this month. Maureen works in watercolors and oils. She has exhibited at the Southampton Cultural Center, Watermill Museum, Guild Hall, Rogers Memorial Museum, and Sea Green Designs.

For those who struggle with persistent Lyme disease there can be debilitating neurologic and arthritic complications. Physician-members of the Medical Advisory Panel to Southampton Hospital’s Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center, Dr. Olga McAbee and Dr. Elaine Karis, will lecture on the neurologic complications seen in Lyme disease patients and Lyme Arthritis, respectively. Dr. Karis will also discuss laboratory testing for Lyme disease to help clarify results, which can be confusing to many people. All attendees will receive a FREE tick removal kit.

Let’s celebrate boys being themselves instead of what is expected from them by gender stereotypes.  Sweet, kind, creative, quiet, sensitive, loving, you name it – any kind of boy is our kind of boy!!  We will read The Invisible Boy, a book about a sensitive and shy boy who is often overlooked.  Each participant will make a t-shirt exclaiming “LOVING IS THE NEW TOUGH, LOVE YOUR MOTHER or MAMA’S BOY”.  Other books that break male gender stereotypes will be displayed too – such as Raising Cain; Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys, Breaking Out of the “Man Box”; The Next Generation of Manhood and more.  An Ecological Culture Initiative Presentation and Community Forum regarding Quality of Life in Hampton Bays.

Abstract:

Settled in 1740, with the name of “Good Ground,” Hampton Bays is the largest year round community in the Town of Southampton. Surrounded by coastal waterways including the Great Peconic Bay, Shinnecock and Tiana Bays, as well as the Atlantic Ocean, along its shores lie extensive wetlands as well as southern coastal dunes.  The community also boasts extensive preserved lands comprised of Northern Pitch Pine and juvenile hardwood forest. The combination of these unique ecological features has developed a rich history of Native American life, Colonial expansion, and tourism that dates back to the 19th century. The remnants of this valuable history stand poised to be overtaken by development but still influence the community in ways that make it an ideal setting for community based regenerative design. The Town of Southampton currently utilizes several incentive programs (i.e., Conservation Easements and Historic Landmark Status) to preserve aspects of local heritage. While much has been achieved through these programs, the Ecological Culture Initiative has re-examined Hampton Bays through geospatial analysis of the cultural, ecological, and historical assets to demonstrate the synergy of its unique resources and develop a model for regenerative neighborhood development.
