    Contact: Adult Services   708-301-7908   askalibrarian@homerlibrary.org

The story of the Yorkie Doodle Dandy is one that is a great tribute to our veterans, including all dogs of war.  From a lucky chance discovery at the bottom of an abandoned fox hole in New Guinea during WWII, to becoming a famous entertainer, a decorated war hero, and the world’s first official Therapy Dog of record, Smoky’s story is nothing short of amazing.  After being rescued in the jungle she went on to be named the number one mascot in the South Pacific, she earned a medal of honor and eight battle stars for her bravery and for the lives she saved, and she was the dog that inspired the creation of today’s therapy dog programs.  These would be major feats for any canine, but all the more so when you find out that Smoky was a tiny 4 lb. Yorkshire Terrier! Learn about Smoky’s accomplishments in this inspirational program presented by Adrian and Denise Brigham.

Writer’s retreat, garrison, Winter White House, train terminus, naval base, cruise ship port, Union outpost, art gallery, Conch Republic, gay haven: the four-mile long island of Key West has been many things to diverse waves of people since before Columbus. The long-timers lament the lost good-old days, yet travelers are still discovering its quirks and charms. Truly a place for anyone and for any type of getaway -- from honeymooners to fugitives -- the last island in the Florida Keys sits 90 miles from Cuba but affords a tradewind-blown tropical getaway reachable by car. Frequent Key West visitor Carol Kania Morency shows you what to see and what not to miss on the island and on the Overseas Highway down the Keys.

Pyrography is essentially woodturning with modern tools, unlike the woodturning of the past. Gail Diedrichson uses hard woods which have a wonderful scent when burned with different types of tips to create fine lines and details.  Gail enjoyed a career as an art teacher and also has an M.A. in drawing from N.I.U. She currently also illustrates children’s books. Gail will demonstrate and bring samples of her work. Her website is www.gailspyrography.com.
