    Contact: Alex Annen   708-301-7908   alex@homerlibrary.org

At one time or another, much of North America, including present-day Illinois, was under French colonial rule. Today, several interrelated, yet distinct, communities of people of French ancestry can be found from eastern Canada to southern Louisiana, reflecting complex patterns of migration and settlement. This presentation by Dennis Stroughmatt, master musician and an expert on French-American folkways, explains the historical and cultural similarities and differences among three of those groups: Illinois Creoles, French Canadians, and Louisiana Cajuns. This event is free and open to the public.  The event is being produced in part by the Illinois Humanities Council’s Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, a program that provides organizations statewide with affordable, entertaining, and thought-provoking humanities events for their communities.

Also known as Holland, the Netherlands has been at war with the North Sea for hundreds of years. The hardworking Dutch built huge dikes & drained the sea water with picturesque windmills to create re-claimed land that hosts cities, farms, and the grand fields of brilliant tulips. Amsterdam and Rotterdam are important industrialized cities contrasted with stately architecture and charming canals. We will also visit Belgium and Luxembourg. Presented by Bill Helmuth.

In the summer of 1812, President James Madison declared war against Great Britain. Why? The British Navy had been seizing or impressing cargo and crews of the American merchant fleet on the high seas. British agents had been encouraging Native Americans to rise up in rebellion against white American settlers. American interests coveted the vast expanse of the Canadian frontier, which remained in Britain's possession. The War of 1812 contributed significantly toward defining the identities of the United States and Canada. The many songs composed during the war and its aftermath -- including our own national anthem -- express a broad range of Native American, white American, British, and Canadian perspectives. They demonstrate that perceptions of war and its repercussions can vary widely, depending on one's experiences of them. Skilled guitarist and singer Lee Murdock performs several of these songs and provides commentary about them based on his extensive research.

What really happened after Sleeping Beauty is awakened by the Prince's kiss? "Happily ever after..." is only relative, and what relatives inhabit these lurid tales!

Listen to the 19th century tales of the Brothers Grimm as originally intended for adults, transformed through Judith and Dan's 21st Century interpretations. The dramatic retellings, some sung as ballads, are accompanied on 16th Century Renaissance lute set to 16th century French and English ballad tunes
