    Contact: Mathew Bose   603.485.6092   mbose@hooksettlibrary.org
Eloquence and Civic Life: The Oratory of Daniel Webster

What made New Hampshire native Daniel Webster America's greatest orator?  James M. Farrell, Professor of Rhetoric in the Communication Department at the University of New Hampshire, will investigate the sources of Webster's genius as a public speaker, and discuss the most eloquent examples of his rhetorical legacy.

"Webster, Daniel (1782-1852), was the best-known American orator, and one of the ablest lawyers and statesmen of his time. He gained his greatest fame as the champion of a strong national government. For years after his death, students memorized thrilling lines from his speeches. Such words as "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!" inspired many Northern soldiers during the American Civil War."

Excerpt taken from World Book Online

This event has been made possible by the University of New Hampshire Speakers Bureau and it is cosponsored by the Hooksett Historical Society and the Hooksett Library. There will be a brief (10-15 min.) business meeting for the Hooksett Historical Society at the beginning of the event.

The event is open to the public and there is no charge to attend.

More about the speaker: James M. Farrell is a Professor of Rhetoric in the Communication Department at the University of New Hampshire, where he teaches classes in argumentation, propaganda, rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism, and American public address. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1988, and has published numerous critical and historical studies of eighteenth-and nineteenth-century American discourse. He is a past winner of the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award from the National Communication Association, and a past winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Liberal Arts at UNH.

Brewing in New Hampshire: An Informal History of Beer in the Granite State from Colonial Times to the Present
Glenn Knoblock explores the fascinating history of New Hampshire’s beer and ale brewing industry from Colonial days, when it was home- and tavern-based, to today’s modern breweries and brew pubs. Unusual and rare photos and advertisements document this changing industry and the state’s earliest brewers, including the renowned Frank Jones.

A number of lesser-known brewers and breweries that operated in the state are also discussed, including the only brewery owned and operated by a woman before the modern era. Illustrations present evidence of society’s changing attitudes towards beer and alcohol consumption over the years.

Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or a “tea-totaler”, this lecture will be enjoyed by adults of all ages.

This event is cosponsored by the Hooksett Historical Society and the Hooksett Library, and it is made possible by the New Hampshire Humanities Council.
