Friends Business Meeting & Program
12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Friends of Huntingdon Valley Library welcome you to their monthly meeting!

We'd love to have you share new ideas and learn all about us.

Following the Friends Business Meeting, Thomas J. Wieckowski will present "John Wanamaker: King of Merchants."

One of the most illustrious citizens of Philadelphia's Gilded Age was the merchant, John Wanamaker. Indeed, his statue on the east side of City Hall proclaims that one word, "citizen." Wanamaker's exploits spanned what easily could be called three careers: Mechant, Politician, and Civic Activist. One might even add his "side interest" of acting as a developer of several communities neighboring his magnificent estate in the Chelten Hills. This presentation will review the accomplishments and exciting life of this notable citizen of Philadelphia and the Chelten Hills, and the Lindenhurst estate that was the center of many of John Wanamaker's life events. This presentation is based on the 2009 book Making Marathon by Thomas J. Wieckowski.

Free and open to all.

Sponsored by the Friends of Huntingdon Valley Library.

Fire. Ice. Flood. Three climate disasters.

Four kids fighting for their lives.

Akira is riding her horse in the California woods when a wildfire sparks--and grows scarily fast. How can she make it to safety when there are flames everywhere? Owen and his best friend, George, are used to seeing polar bears on the snowy Canadian tundra. But when one bear gets way too close for comfort, do the boys have any chance of surviving? Natalie hunkers down at home as a massive hurricane barrels toward Miami. When the floodwaters crash into her house, Natalie is dragged out into the storm--with nowhere to hide. Akira, Owen, George, and Natalie are all swept up in the devastating effects of climate change.

They are also connected in ways that will shock them--and could alter their destinies forever.

Out with the old paper SAT and in with the new digital adaptive SAT!

Starting in March 2024, high school students will take a new, fully redesigned, digital adaptive SAT. In this presentation, Eric Hahn, a local test prep expert, will guide you through what to expect from the new test. How does a digital adaptive test work? How should students prepare for it? How might PSAT scores and past paper SAT scores translate to the new digital SAT? How will colleges view the new SAT?  Is the ACT also going digital? And are colleges even still using test scores in admissions? Eric will answer all of these questions and more. There will be time for a Q&A, so come prepared with any admissions testing questions you have.

Eric Hahn is the founder of Premier College Prep (PremierCollegePrep.com), a test prep service based in Ambler that has helped local students and their parents navigate testing and college admissions for more than 10 years.

For students in grades 9-12.

Registration is required. Space is limited.
