Media Historian, Donna Halper, takes us on a trip back through time to the early days of radio, both Boston stations & she'll cover local North Shore ones as well. "Boston's radio history begins with pioneering station 1XE/WGI, one of America's first radio stations, and includes the first station to receive a commercial license, WBZ; the first FM radio network, W1XOJ and W1XER; and one of the first news networks, the Yankee News Service. Nationally known bandleaders like Joe Rines and Jacques Renard were first heard on Boston radio, as was one of the first weathercasters, E. B. Rideout. The city has been home to a number of legendary announcers, such as Bob and Ray, Arnie Ginsburg, Dick Summer, Dale Dorman, and Charles Laquidara; talk show giants like Jerry Williams and David Brudnoy; and sports talkers like Eddie Andelman and Glenn Ordway. Many Boston radio personalities, such as Curt Gowdy, "Big Brother" Bob Emery, Don Kent, and Louise Morgan, found fame on television but first established themselves on Boston's airwaves. Since 1920, Boston radio has remained vibrant, proving that live and local stations are as important as ever."

Assistant history professor Dr. Abby Chandler presents the fascinating and little understood role of midwives in Colonial America. A midwife was among the five to eight women invited to attend a birth, serving not only as medical assistant, but also legal representative in a society that closely scrutinized births for impropriety.  Dr. Chandler will discuss her extensive reserach of the training, professional and personal lives of many Essex County midwives, with additional information on two Wenham midwives. Presented in partnership with the Hamilton Historical Society.

Recent changes in the publishing industry have made self-publishing a viable way to publish a book and build a writing career. Local authors Ariele Sieling and Christopher Kellen, both self-published, take a closer look at strategies for creating a book that is both a quality product and affordable for the writer. They discuss the right -- and the wrong -- reasons for choosing to self-publish, tips for preparing a book for publication, and how to avoid common pitfalls--all interspersed with tales of their own. Funded by the Friends, free and open to the public.

Bring your brown-bag lunch and we'll discuss The 12 Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis, 2012. "In 1923, fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented. Hattie gives birth to nine more children whom she raises with grit and mettle and not an ounce of the tenderness they crave. She vows to prepare them for the calamitous difficulty they are sure to face in their later lives, to meet a world that will not love them, a world that will not be kind. Captured here in twelve luminous narrative threads, their lives tell the story of a mother's monumental courage and the journey of a nation." -library catalog

T. E. Lawrence, the famous “Lawrence of Arabia” was a British Army officer renowned especially for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916–18. Great Britian and France tried to enlist the help of the Arabs against the Ottomans, and led them to believe they would have control over the lands they liberated.  These promises were not kept, instead, the region was carved up based on imperialst needs.  Historian Bob Begin will talk about Lawrence’s role in the Middle East and the legacy of these early 20th century events. Free and open to the public, funded by the Friends.

A successful person is not always someone who is 'book smart'. This presentation will address the theory of 'Multiple Intelligences' which was developed in in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of Education at Harvard University. Gardner's theory suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential. These intelligences are: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist.  What's your strength? How does it impact aspects of your life and family? Find out! Free and open to the public.

Deirdre Budzyna comes to us by way of the North Shore Community College Speakers' Bureau, and has been funded by the Friends.

    Contact: Nancy Day   978-468-5577   nday@mvlc.org

Bring your brown-bag lunch and we'll discuss To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, 1960. "One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime."   -Amazon

Available in: hardcover, paperback, largeprint, and CD. (However I highly recommend the audiobook read by Sissy Spacek. It's wonderful).
