Literary Luncheon meets to discuss A Star for Mrs. Blake by April Smith.  "Cora Blake never dreamed she’d go to Paris. She’s hardly ever left the small fishing village where she grew up. Yet in the summer of 1931, she is invited to travel to France with hundreds of other Gold Star Mothers, courtesy of the U.S. government, to say goodbye to their fallen sons, American casualties of World War I who were buried overseas. Chaperoned by a dashing West Point officer, Cora’s group includes the wife of an immigrant chicken farmer; a housemaid; a socialite; a former tennis star in precarious mental health; and dozens of other women from all over the country.  Along the way, the women will forge lifelong friendships as they face a death, a scandal, and a secret revealed." -Amazon  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

Kate McBrien, chief curator of the Maine Historical Society, talks about the history of Maine's Malaga Island, 42 acres of rocky and rugged coast that the Phippsburg mainlanders eyed for tourism development. Malaga was settled from 1860-1912, when the hardscrabble, interracial community of about 40 individuals was evicted, despite generations having occupied the island. The residents dismantled and removed their own homes, leaving the school and cemetery to be relocated by the State. Ms. McBrien gives voice to the forgotten Malaga community with photographs, stories, and island artifacts. Free and open to the public, bring along a friend.

Discover Cape Ann’s lesser known inland woods –  a vast unsettled area stretching from Route 128 north to Lanesville, and from Riverdale east to Rockport. For here are the remains of a deserted colonial settlement, abandoned granite quarries, and enigmatic boulders – laced with a confusing maze of old roads and trails from colonial times. Combining historical maps with satellite imagery, old and new photographs, oral history, genealogy, and more, the author of three books about Dogtown and Cape Ann, Mark Carlotto, takes us on a tour. The presentation includes a demonstration of an app that shows a user's location and placemark information as he or she walks along the old roads and trails of Dogtown. This ... is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and of what she found in their place. Presents the memoir of a magazine writer's yearlong travels across the world in search of pleasure, guidance, experience, and meaning.”   -library catalog

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Frozen Water Trade by Gavin Weightman.  "The idea sounds fanciful: harvest ice in Massachusetts and sell it to people in the tropics. But the nineteenth-century entrepreneur Frederic Tudor was immune to ridicule and single-minded in his conviction that the ice trade could be profitable. He was also right. This entertaining history of his crusade to turn New England into the world's ice-maker shows how the combination of technological innovation and sharp marketing—Tudor trained bartenders to use ice in cocktails in order to illustrate the virtues of cold drinks—created an industry that sold thousands of tons of ice a year to places like India, Cuba, and the American South. As a case study of the entrepreneurial mind, Weightman's book reminds us that creating demand can be as important as meeting it." -The New Yorker.  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

"The University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the nine boys, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what beating the odds really meant. They defeated elite rivals from California and eastern schools to earn the right to compete against the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic Games in Berlin. The crew was assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it was their trust in each other that made them a victorious team."--back cover.
