    Contact: Rebecca Shea   978-468-5577   rshea@mvlc.org

The Dinner by Herman Koch.  Fiction, 2009.  An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives—all over the course of one meal. Behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy. -Amazon, edited.   Available in hardcover, large print, CD, MP3 CD, and ebook

Rebel Queen by Michelle Morgan join us for discussion:  "India in the 1850s is fractured into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the British Empire. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British Army is met with a surprising challenge. Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies, one male, one female , and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire determined to take away the land she loves."

Make the future happen, create it in your vision.
Come share your bright ideas! This group (for patrons ages 11-18) is the Library’s teen advisory board. Artist Rob Franco presents his oil paintings depicting the wild ponies of eastern Maryland's Assateague Island National Seashore. The ponies have lived on the island free of human intervention since the 1700's.  Franco was inspired by his emotional first visit; subsequent visits allowed him to capture the intimate moments and interactions of these beautiful creatures. One particular family band, consisting of a six week old filly foal 'Serafina', her mother & father plus two additional mares, are the inspiration for this body of work.  For all ages, the artist especially welcomes children & students to attend, free and open to the public.

    Contact: Nancy Day   978-468-5577   nday@hwlibrary.org

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss our 8th community read: Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt.  Winner of both the Newbery Honor and Printz Honor awards, this work of young adult historical fiction is based on the destruction of a hardscrabble, interracial community that inhabited Maine’s Malaga Island until 1912. The tale follows mainland newcomer Buckminster, and his tenuous friendship with Lizzie, a smart and lively resident of Malaga. They bond in the rugged beauty of the Maine coast as they both grapple with the eviction of the Island’s residents and their positions within their communities.  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

Dr. Gary D. Schmidt will speak at Gordon College on Thursday, Oct. 27. Author reception and book signing from 6:00-7:00, presentation at 7:30. Join us!

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss A Star for Mrs. Blake by April Smith.  "Cora Blake never dreamed she’d go to Paris. She’s hardly ever left the small fishing village where she grew up. Yet in the summer of 1931, she is invited to travel to France with hundreds of other Gold Star Mothers, courtesy of the U.S. government, to say goodbye to their fallen sons, American casualties of World War I who were buried overseas. Chaperoned by a dashing West Point officer, Cora’s group includes the wife of an immigrant chicken farmer; a housemaid; a socialite; a former tennis star in precarious mental health; and dozens of other women from all over the country.  Along the way, the women will forge lifelong friendships as they face a death, a scandal, and a secret revealed." -Amazon  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

Kate McBrien, chief curator of the Maine Historical Society, talks about the history of Maine's Malaga Island, 42 acres of rocky and rugged coast that the Phippsburg mainlanders eyed for tourism development. Malaga was settled from 1860-1912, when the hardscrabble, interracial community of about 40 individuals was evicted, despite generations having occupied the island. The residents dismantled and removed their own homes, leaving the school and cemetery to be relocated by the State. Ms. McBrien gives voice to the forgotten Malaga community with photographs, stories, and island artifacts. Free and open to the public, bring along a friend.

    Contact: Nancy Day   978-468-5577   nday@hwlibrary.org

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Frozen Water Trade by Gavin Weightman.  "The idea sounds fanciful: harvest ice in Massachusetts and sell it to people in the tropics. But the nineteenth-century entrepreneur Frederic Tudor was immune to ridicule and single-minded in his conviction that the ice trade could be profitable. He was also right. This entertaining history of his crusade to turn New England into the world's ice-maker shows how the combination of technological innovation and sharp marketing—Tudor trained bartenders to use ice in cocktails in order to illustrate the virtues of cold drinks—created an industry that sold thousands of tons of ice a year to places like India, Cuba, and the American South. As a case study of the entrepreneurial mind, Weightman's book reminds us that creating demand can be as important as meeting it." -The New Yorker.  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

"The University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the nine boys, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what beating the odds really meant. They defeated elite rivals from California and eastern schools to earn the right to compete against the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic Games in Berlin. The crew was assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it was their trust in each other that made them a victorious team."--back cover.
