The program will include:
A chronological presentation of several different eras of sword use, including a physical demonstration of the use of several different types of swords (It is all choreographed and practiced in advance and they only use blunt steel swords.).
A question and answer/"mythbusters" segment where they discuss the common misconceptions about swords.
Some images from historical works (PowerPoint).
An introduction to historical interpretation which includes some audience participation (Usually they provide two audience members with foam swords and have them work through a historical combat sequence.)

Engage in the mystery and the science of a Crime Scene Investigation Forensics Lab. From traditional fingerprinting techniques to DNA sampling and analysis, students will have the opportunity to explore methods used by scientists and detectives to properly identify suspects wrapped up in criminal investigations.

A small amount of cell biology will be discussed as students extract DNA from fruit cells or their own cheek cells. Historic and modern techniques of fingerprinting will be used as students make their own fingerprint charts and dust for latent prints using magnetic and UV powder. A microscope and two stereoscopes will be available for further investigation. Students can: identify significant markers on latent prints, study their own fingers and magnify sampled DNA. To end the investigation two - three real crimes that used covered practices will be discussed.

This workshop is designed to introduce the financial aid process and provide helpful hints to potentially increase your financial aid eligibility.

    Contact: Rebecca Shea   978-468-5577   rshea@mvlc.org

Rome and Pompeii were part of the “Grand Tour” for upper-class elite from the 17th through the 19th centuries, and remain today the primary sites through which we reach back into the Roman empire’s past. R. Scott Smith explores the archaeological remains of Rome, the “Eternal City,” and Pompeii, the town that was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and discusses the problems of preserving these ancient ruins. The latter issue is especially important as the great monuments that symbolize the past have recently been threatened (the Coliseum by frigid temperatures in 2011-12) or completely destroyed (The House of the Gladiator by torrential rains in 2010).

Presented by Scott Smith, UNH's Associate Professor of Classics. Funded by the Friends, free and open to the public.

89 year-old Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mother in her 30s, to drop everything and drive her from Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in Cincinnati-- tomorrow. Over the years, Dorrie and Isabelle have developed a friendship. But Dorrie wonders why Isabelle chose her. Isabelle, as a willful teen in 1930s Kentucky, fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of the housekeeper. Their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences makes it clear Dorrie and Isabelle are headed for a gathering of the utmost importance and that the history of Isabelle's first & greatest love might help Dorrie find her own way. Click to request your copy of  Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler.  Be sure to bring your brown-bag lunch, coffee, tea & dessert will be provided by the Library, plus something extra inspired by the book.  The next meeting is on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 11:30 to discuss The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg.

    Contact: Rebecca Shea   978-468-5577   rshea@mvlc.org

This well-illustrated lecture traces the development of the celebration of Christmas from the time it was outlawed in the 17th c. to the beginning of the 21st c. when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place. For many, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year. But, many of the customs we take for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations are actually a product of more recent history.  Ken Turnino, Manager of Community Engagement and Exhibitions as Historic New England, has published several articles of the history of Christmas and speaks on the topic widely. He will look at how Christmas was transformed from a rowdy celebration to a family centered event.  Among topics discussed are how the Christmas tree became popular, halls were decked, and Santa Clause came to town. Funded by the Friends, free and open to the public.

One of the ironies of the American Industrial Revolution is that the entrepreneurs who built New England’s textile mills sought out independent, hard-working farm girls to work in them. Having done so, the men were continually surprised by the spirit and grit of the work force they had assembled. These young women were not only the country’s first large-scale industrial labor force but also the biggest gatherings yet of women without men. By bringing thousands of unmarried, unaccompanied women together and putting money in their pockets, the Boston Brahmins who bankrolled New England’s mills inadvertently triggered powerful new social forces that rippled across the country.  Free and open to the public, bring a friend.
