    Contact: Nancy Day   978-468-5577   nday@hwlibrary.org

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Frozen Water Trade by Gavin Weightman.  "The idea sounds fanciful: harvest ice in Massachusetts and sell it to people in the tropics. But the nineteenth-century entrepreneur Frederic Tudor was immune to ridicule and single-minded in his conviction that the ice trade could be profitable. He was also right. This entertaining history of his crusade to turn New England into the world's ice-maker shows how the combination of technological innovation and sharp marketing—Tudor trained bartenders to use ice in cocktails in order to illustrate the virtues of cold drinks—created an industry that sold thousands of tons of ice a year to places like India, Cuba, and the American South. As a case study of the entrepreneurial mind, Weightman's book reminds us that creating demand can be as important as meeting it." -The New Yorker.  Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

misc_none 1:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Movie: A Man Called Ove Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

[Subtitled]  "Stepping from the pages of Fredrik Backman s international best-selling novel, Ove is the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing block association rules that only he cares about, and visiting his wife's grave, Ove has given up on life. Enter a boisterous young family next door who accidentally flattens Ove s mailbox while moving in and earning his special brand of ire. Yet from this inauspicious beginning an unlikely friendship forms and we come to understand Ove's past happiness and heartbreaks. What emerges is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it's shared. One of Sweden's biggest locally-produced box office hits ever, director Hannes Holm finds the beating heart of his source material and Swedish star Rolf Lassgård, whose performance won him the Best Actor award at the 2016 Seattle Int'l Film Festival, affectingly embodies the lovable curmudgeon Ove." -Amazon, rated PG-13.

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

"The University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the nine boys, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what beating the odds really meant. They defeated elite rivals from California and eastern schools to earn the right to compete against the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic Games in Berlin. The crew was assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it was their trust in each other that made them a victorious team."--back cover.

How did young people become acquainted before the practice of dating became common? Let’s go back to Queen Victoria’s time with our hostess, Mrs. Michael Gordon as played by Rita Parisi. She will share memories of her own courtship during a time when a girl flirted with her fan, chose her own suitors, valentines proclaimed true love and romance was the rule rather than the exception. Victorian style dress is  encouraged including hats and gloves. And don't forget to bring a fan and follow along as Mrs. Gordon demonstrates the language of the fan. Historical fiction, 1970.  This, the first in the series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, R.N., and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the flood, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle. -library catalog  **Note:  the book differs greatly from the movie of the same name**  Available in print, large print, CD, and eaudio.

This presentation includes the history of the islands and how they’ve been used (and misused) over the years as well as information about visiting them today.   It’s a place worth getting to know.  It offers wilderness campsites, beaches with lifeguards (yes, the water’s clean now), two centuries of overgrown forts with missile silos and gun emplacements, the ruins of a famous actress’s mansion, a former FBI safe house, and a landscaped island with several miles of hiking trails that was built mostly with fill from the Big Dig.
