Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

"The University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the nine boys, in the depths of the Great Depression, showed the world what beating the odds really meant. They defeated elite rivals from California and eastern schools to earn the right to compete against the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler in the Olympic Games in Berlin. The crew was assembled by an enigmatic coach and mentored by a visionary, eccentric British boat builder, but it was their trust in each other that made them a victorious team."--back cover.

Bring your brown-bag lunch to the discussion, beverages and dessert will be provided.

    Contact: Rebecca Shea   978-468-5577   rshea@hwlibrary.org

In 2017, the two hundredth anniversary of her death, Jane Austen will appear on both the two pound coin and the ten pound note. The only female to feature more prominently on British currency is Queen Elizabeth II, one of the most recognizable faces in the world.  But what did Jane Austen, the most famous female writer in the world, actually look like? Austen's face throughout two centuries, has, like the writer herself, been reticent. Jane Austen: Portrait of a Lady will look at the few possible portraits of the writer that exist, and examine their authenticity: Only two by her sister Cassandra have the stamp of authority, yet give little detail. Other portraits, some discovered very recently, are more detailed, but are they accurate? Examine copies of them yourself and help answer the question, “What did Jane Austen look like?”  Presented by Professor Price Grisham, free and open to the public, funded by the Friends.

This is a tasting (we’re not eating a full portion), so doubling your recipe shouldn’t be necessary. The Library provides coffee, tea & water; utensils & plates/bowls. Copies of the recipes will be provided. Now, tell us about your dish!

Dieting rules say we should not equate food with love, but is that so wrong?  What do you make for your special someone? Or better yet, what would you most like to receive? RSVP to Nancy by Thursday, 2/9.

How does this group work?  Each month there will be a feature theme, idea, or chef to focus on. Participants prepare an appetizer, main course or dessert; enough to serve 4-8. This is a tasting (we’re not eating a full portion), so doubling your recipe shouldn’t be necessary. The Library provides coffee, tea & water; utensils & plates/bowls. Copies of the recipes will be provided. Now, tell us about your dish!

International Pi Day celebrates the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter! It's interesting and wondrous because the equation represents an infinite number: (3.141592...) Let’s eat Pie!  RSVP to Nancy by Thursday, 3/9.

Literary Luncheon meets to discuss The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian.  "Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Aleppo, Syria in 1915, where she has volunteered to help deliver food and medical aid to refugees of the Armenian Genocide during the First World War. There she meets Armen, a young Armenian engineer who has already lost his wife and infant daughter. After leaving Aleppo and joining the British Army, he begins to write Elizabeth letters, realizing that he has fallen in love with the wealthy young American. Years later, their American granddaughter, Laura, embarks on a journey back through her family’s history, uncovering a story of love, loss—and a wrenching secret that has been buried for generations." -Amazon, edited.

The announcement that Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was controversial, naysayers challenged the notion that this singer/songwriter is as 'literary' or as important as the work of traditional poets, novelists, and playwrights. Join Professor Barents to hear and discuss songs from different periods of Dylan's career, and see how Dylan's lyrics compare favorably to the very best literature in the world.

Presented by Kevin Barents, teacher at the CAS Writing Program at Boston University since 2005. His poetry has been published in Slate, and AGNI Online, among others. Barents has discussed Bob Dylan's work and his BU classes on Dylan in NPR's Weekend Edition, the Korean TV station KBS, W Radio News, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and in his books: Dylan: Disc by Disc (2015) and Professing Dylan (2016).

Historical fiction, 1970.  This, the first in the series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, R.N., and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the flood, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle. -library catalog  **Note:  the book differs greatly from the movie of the same name**  Available in print, large print, CD, and eaudio.
