    Contact: Jan Dempsey   9784685577   jdempsey@mvlc.org

Letters from Nigeria: A young American observes a newly independent country 1961-62.  A young American joins her husband on a pre-Peace Corps mission to newly independent Nigeria: she to work in the Ministry of Education, he joins a team of economists sent by the Ford Foundation. Gretel's letters home give an inside view of the fledging government. Full-color slides bring alive the vibrant cultures of the new nation. Life among British civil servants, visiting foreign diplomats and speculators, and daily interactions with the Nigerian people are the heart of this story. Included in Clark's anthropological musings, and economic development theories, is the birth of her first child in a West African government hospital.  Local resident Gretel Clark has taught on four continents, raised four children, and is currently a beekeeper.

The Dinner by Herman Koch.  Fiction, 2009.  An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives—all over the course of one meal. Behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy. -Amazon, edited.   Available in hardcover, large print, CD, MP3 CD, and ebook

But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British Army is met with a surprising challenge. Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies, one male, one female , and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire determined to take away the land she loves."

Artist Rob Franco presents his oil paintings depicting the wild ponies of eastern Maryland's Assateague Island National Seashore. The ponies have lived on the island free of human intervention since the 1700's.  Franco was inspired by his emotional first visit; subsequent visits allowed him to capture the intimate moments and interactions of these beautiful creatures. One particular family band, consisting of a six week old filly foal 'Serafina', her mother & father plus two additional mares, are the inspiration for this body of work.  For all ages, the artist especially welcomes children & students to attend, free and open to the public.

Kate McBrien, chief curator of the Maine Historical Society, talks about the history of Maine's Malaga Island, 42 acres of rocky and rugged coast that the Phippsburg mainlanders eyed for tourism development. Malaga was settled from 1860-1912, when the hardscrabble, interracial community of about 40 individuals was evicted, despite generations having occupied the island. The residents dismantled and removed their own homes, leaving the school and cemetery to be relocated by the State. Ms. McBrien gives voice to the forgotten Malaga community with photographs, stories, and island artifacts. Free and open to the public, bring along a friend.

Join Edith Maxwell, Elizabeth Atkinson and Holly Robinson as they talk about the process of working wtih an editor. Did you know many authors hire an independent editor before pursuing an agent or publisher? Should you get your manuscript critiqued by a book doctor?  Developmental editor? Everyone is welcome to have a look behind the scenes, this panel of authors is lively, experienced, and promises to be thought-provoking. Free and open to the public, funded by the Friends.
