    Contact: Rebecca Shea   978-468-5577   rshea@hwlibrary.org

Join local author and historian Olga Morrill for a discussion on Quaker history in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  Plymouth Rock and the Puritan landing in 1620 figure prominently in Massachusetts history, but the century and a half between that event and the American Revolution of 1775 is largely a mystery. Few people are aware of the shocking events that occurred in 17th century New England. What was Colonial life like for the first generation of American-born settlers? How did the Puritans govern? Why did they react so violently to the Religious Society of Friends? Who were the original proponents of religious tolerance on American soil?  Sponsored in partnership with the Hamilton Historical Society & the Friends of the Library.  Free and open to the public.

History information about the Day of the Dead celebration from National Geographic's website:
Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit—and during Día de los Muertos, they temporarily returned to Earth. Today’s Día de los Muertos celebration is a mash-up of pre-Hispanic religious rites and Christian feasts. It takes place on November 1 and 2—All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on the Catholic calendar—around the time of the fall maize harvest.

ent_stage.png 7:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Brainstorming: An Act of Mentalism with Rory Raven Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Kim Claire, Young Adult Librarian   978-468-5577   kclaire@hwlibrary.org

Brainstorming is an interactive stage mind-reading show. Minds are read, spoons are bent, volunteers test their own "powers", and, if appropriate, the evening concludes with a re-creation of the kind of manifestation you might have witnessed in a séance chamber over a century ago! While the show is "TV clean", it is more suitable for teens and adults than for children..

A life-long interest in all things psychic and paranormal led Rory to pursue a career as a mentalist and mindbender. His goal is to reproduce the kind of effects parapsychologists have been researching for years – only he wants to do them live and onstage. What is a mentalist? A mentalist is a theatrical mind-reader; a performer who, using a variety of techniques, is able to produce results that would only seem possible by psychic or paranormal means.

Rory’s work has brought him to a number of wonderful places over the years. From Salem to Manhattan to Istanbul - he has performed for bar patrons, educational groups, nightclub crowds, champion bridge players, and even a coven of witches! Throughout his travels, Rory says that one thing has always intrigued him. “What I find interesting is that everyone has an opinion about whether or not telepathy exists. The great thing is that you don't have to believe in order to find mentalism compelling, any more than you have to believe that the actor onstage really is a melancholy Danish prince in order to get completely caught up in that experience. Remember, we're in the Theater of the Mind, and not just my mind... but yours as well.” Rory's website is: http://roryraven.com

Contact: Kim Claire, Young Adult Librarian   978-468-5577   kclaire@hwlibrary.org

Reading tea leaves — also called tasseography or tasseomancy — is a fascinating form of divination, which some refer to as a “lost art.” The idea is that your energy gets infused into the tea leaves, which can then form themselves into symbols in the cup to send messages. People have used tea leaf readings to divine their future, connect with spirits and get advice on a problem. It has been found in cultures all around the world.

Roxie has been reading tea leaves for over 25 years and her enthusiasm for this lost art is reflected in each reading she does.  She will customize a blend of organic, herbal tea to suit your needs and situation and the magic of your own tea leaf reading will begin! This form of divination uses the intuitive ability to discern the meanings of the leaves and their symbols left behind in the cup of tea.  Each zone of the teacup has meaning as well as each symbol.  Every reading is unique offering the querent’s specific symbols, including – but not limited to – spirit guides, animals, lucky numbers, dates, names, ancestors, angels and many times complete words are spelled out.  Roxie will go over the history, lore and methods of tea leaf reading in this presentation.

Roxie is the author of 7 books on New England folklore and ghost stories and she throughly enjoys educating people with tales of folklore, the strange and unusual.  Her company website is newenglandcuriosities.comRoxie's company has been offering tours and special haunted events since 2002 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Featured in the Boston Herald and the New York Times. TV appearances include New Hampshire Chronicle, The History Channel and the Travel Channel! The hostess of the hit podcast Wicked Curious she shares a lifetime of research and experience about the paranormal and metaphysical.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's   a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. What follows for Laurie, Sarah, and Jack is 10 years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming, and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.
