misc_none 6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM The Basics of Habitat - Nature Gardening Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Basics of Habitat - Nature Gardening

Habitat Gardening, (also known as Environmental Gardening, Nature Gardening, Sustainable Landscaping), refers to the process of converting traditional landscape plans in privately owned yards or public spaces to those that attract and support native birds, bees, butterflies, insects, bats and other native wildlife.  We know that many bird, insect and native animal populations are in decline. However, we also know that their populations can often rebound when their environment (habitat) improves. Native plants are the cornerstone of Nature Gardening because of their unmatched value in co-evolving with and thus sustaining our native wildlife.  This presentation will explain the basics of Habitat Gardening including the importance of providing food, shelter, water and nesting places or safe places for the next generation of native wildlife to raise their young. A list of native plants to support wildlife will also be presented.

Catherine Carney-Feldman is an Ipswich resident and member of the Ipswich Conservation Commission and a member of the Board of the Ipswich Humane Group.  She is the owner of 'Shamrock Acres' an environmental garden and landscape design business and consults and lectures on environmental and gardening issues.  As a volunteer she manages the nature gardens at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary (an Audubon property) where you can find here every Tuesday morning during the growing season. She is a Master Gardener and Accredited Organic Land Care Professional.

Check out a copy of the selected book (starting on April 20) at the library, pick a recipe (we'll keep track to avoid duplicates), and prepare it for the program. We'll sample lots of good food, talk about what worked and what didn't, and select future cookbooks.

This club meets every first Thursday of the month at noon.
