The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Please join us as we celebrate our second Big Read with Mark Twain’s joyful ode to the endless possibilities of childhood, the beloved classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It brings to life and array of irresistible characters—the self-confident Tom, his best buddy Huck Finn, indulgent Aunt Polly, and the lovely, beguiling Becky—as well as such unforgettable incidents as whitewashing a fence, swearing an oath in blood, and getting lost in a dark and labyrinthine cave.

Please join us for Ken Burns’ remarkable documentary covering the magnificent story of Missouri-born author Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain), encompassing legend and fact with an exhilarating sense of adventure. Hailed by Hemingway as the originator of American literature, Twain viewed himself as THE American. Burns's film backs that claim as it follows Clemens's literary odyssey around the globe, from unrivaled acclaim as a writer to near destitution and the devastating deaths of his wife and three children.

From Adam’s puzzled attempts to explain the appearance of a mysterious new creature in Eden to Tom Sawyer’s search for a superior cure for warts, Mark Twain’s imaginative characters – and sometimes Samuel Clemens himself – often used superstitions, dubious logic, and blind faith to make sense of an uncertain world. Come join this exploration of the magical thinking in Mark Twain’s masterful stories.

Please join us for Mark Twain Tonight! which began as a Broadway show in the 1960s and was filmed as a CBS special in 1967. Yet you'd never know it, because the humor, which is more than a century old, is still laugh-out-loud funny today. Holbrook gives a monologue that is rambling, intelligent, and humorous as he culls together commentary from a variety of Twain sources. From dachshund hounds, politics, and patriotism to cigar smoking, memory loss, and religion, this 90-minute performance leaps from subject to subject as we're entertained by material that's as fresh today as it was when it was written in the 1800s.
