Between the world and me

Tuesday nights are when our Conifer Book Group gets together to discuss great reads. This month we're discussing Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In a series of essays, written as a letter to his son, Coates confronts the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives. Thoughtfully exploring personal and historical events, from his time at Howard University to the Civil War, the author poignantly asks and attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society. New members always welcome!

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Great Decisions Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

"Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family."
-Kofi Annan, 1997

Great Decisions consists of in-depth conversations about some of today's most complicated and important U.S. foreign policy topics: The EU; The Truth about Trade, Jobs and Politics; Navies and Sovereignty: China and the United States in the South China Sea; Saudi Arabia in Transition; U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum; A New Political Era in Latin America: From Ideology to Pragmatism?; Afghanistan and Pakistan; and Nuclear Security. Reservations are not required. We highly recommended that participants come prepared by reading the article on each session's topic.

2. The Truth about Trade, Jobs and Politics: By Jeremy Haft

The U.S. political mood toward trade has gone sour. One need look no further than the 2016 presidential contest for the popular narrative: Trade means that China wins, at America’s expense. But do the numbers support that conclusion? The metrics used to gauge economic strength—Gross Domestic Product and balance of trade—have not kept up with the realities of modern manufacturing. Obtaining an accurate picture of U.S. economic stature requires a critique of those numbers. Only then can the U.S. develop appropriate policy solutions for the challenges at hand.
